How the author organized the book.

The text is organized in a graphic novel, and it has a set timeline later in the book, meaning that it does not hop around from age ten to fifteen back to seven. However, in the beginning of the book, the timeline is not set. You can tell this because it goes from age 10 to newborn to six, etc. The graphic novel itself is black and white, and usually has about eight panels per page. I believe that the way that she organized it made it more impactful, but also made it a little harder to understand because all the pages were in black and white. The fact everything is in black and white made it a little harder to distinguish characters from one of another.

“We didn’t really like to wear the veil, especially since we didn’t understand why.” (Satrapi 1). This quote is from the very first page of the book, and right away it shows her dislike of the veil.

“I really didn’t know what to think of the veil.” (Satrapi 6). This quote shows her mixed emotions about this new thing that was required to wear. Her mother is shown to dislike the veil, and that may have influenced her like or dislike of the veil.

“This group had been added in 1982, to arrest women who were improperly veiled. Like me.” (Satrapi 132). This is talking about the group called Guardians of the Revolution. They were harassing Satrapi for wearing things that they consider unfitting for a 'good muslim girl'. This relates to the veil because a few panels they harass her for showing some hair and calls her "a little wh*re", which could definitely relate to her hatred of the veil.

“Everywhere in the streets there were demonstrations for and against the veil.” (Satrapi 5). This quote talks about the protests that go on about this issue. While some people wanted the veil, many didn't, so that caused much conflict in this book. Later she(Satrapi) goes to protest against the veil, but this could be because she heard he parents talking about that many times before.

“...And if I didn’t want that to happen, I should wear the veil…” (Taji Satrapi 74). This quote is from Satrapi's mother and how she was threatened to be raped, discarded like garbage, or killed because she was not wearing the veil. This would have influenced her to become more anti-veil because of how her mother was treated and throughout the book we see that she loves her mother very much.
