  • Uncle Billy is meant to relax and make the reader feel at home. It has a down home feel and the name is a common one, which makes the character a little more relatable to the character. Also, since he is an uncle, and his name is Billy, he is probably older, wiser, and therefore commands more respect. The connotation of the name is mediocre, it makes you think of an older guy who lives in the boondocks, it could be good or bad depending on who you are. 
  • The purpose of the name in this story is to make the reader feel more relaxed about Uncle Billy and more surprised when you find out that he is a criminal and traitor.

  • The others in the town perceived him as a criminal, and they kicked him out of time. 
  • The outcasts don’t really trust each other. They all don’t really want to be together, they are just traveling together to the next town. They also seem to distrust each other a little bit and are annoyed by eachother’s reactions to being kicked out of town.

  • Because he is a drunkard and also suspected of robbing sluices, so the town doesn’t want him around. There were also some other things that were stolen, and it could have been him.
  • The people made the decision for him to leave, it seems to have been a vigilante committee. 
  • Uncle Billy views leaving Poker Flat very angrily, as he swears a lot. Uncle Billy obviously wanted to stay in Poker Flat or he would not have been so mad.
