Today I was once again able to experience the unifying effect of music that touches our hearts. The experience that music brings people together in a universal language is fantastic. In the moment of making music together, words are no longer needed.
Music has so many aspects:
It can heal, stir, unite, abort, make sad, and much more.
No wonder that the powerful are suspicious of music, since it can itself trigger so much in people.
And not to forget: Preparing food and eating together makes you happy! 😄

Lots of new experiences to process today: the Tanbou Chan session was a great shared music event and the circle was completed with the kassavarie through completely new cooking and tasting experiences of the kasav with another drumming session where Anna and the owner introduced us to the combination of hard work with rhythmic ease. This shows once again how the roots of rock and pop have been passed down into European music and what its origins are. All this will resonate in me for a long time.

Today was a good day that started with music and ended with food. It enriched my views with unique impressions. Getting to know so many interesting facts about the drums in culture, the six rhythms we achieved and especially playing the kas in a group, a half circle was amazing. This could only be topped when it even became more vivid and all those nice children entered the stage. Everyone of them is unique, all the different characters and hairstyles are a lively fact of a colorful culture. Visiting the place which literally was on fire 🔥 and everyone preparing their own peace of manyoc pita 🫓 brought the group even more together. The simplicity of this 250 years old “first restaurant” showed how simple and fulfilling life can - and more often - should be. To round up this successful day at the local night market was just the right place to be!

What I learned today…as a teacher it is important to remember that it’s possible that not all of your students enjoy your subject as much as you do, feel confident in your subject or they may even hate your subject. Always be kind!

I ask my students in the first class why they are learning English and I get a variety of answers from very positive to extremely negative. To help me remember those who mentioned negative feelings about my subject I put a mark next to the student‘s picture on my roster. I teach many students so it’s hard for me to just remember on my own. That helps me to remember who might need a little bit of help, some extra encouragement or an extra smile. A little bit of kindness goes a long way…

As many of my colleagues mentioned, today was an extremely enriching day. We experienced in local communities two of my passions: music and food. Every culture has its own traditions and rituals related to food or music. Even though these two cultural aspects are remarkably recognised, today I learned how, behind the superficial heritage, we need to look deeper and find the reasons that take people to create new elements of culture. As an exemple, we learned that the Gwo ka appeared during the slave trade - that’s why I wonder how such a wonderful thing as music can be linked to that dark period. It reminded me the marginalisation and social situation of Gipsys in my country that then gave us our most valued music style: flamenco. Edgard told us about all these music rituals around drums in Guadeloupe and how families stick together to survive through difficult moments. I found really interesting all that and I connected that with my own culture: music, family and food all together, giving sense to our identities.

Music, what else can I say. Besides sports I would say that music is one of my biggest passions. I'll never get in a better mood than playing music with my friends. It reminds me of so many fun evenings with strangers while just jammin around. Music is the only global language everyone speaks or at least understands. I have a schoolband and the joy and passion to play together with my kids is great. Seeing them blossom while playing the first time in front of a crowd is priceless. For me the little things makes being a teacher a wonderful job and helps me to see threw the "bad" times that can affect that job. As Louis Armstrong said, I see trees of green and clouds of white.... And I think to myself, what a wonderful day

Music is not for listening but sharing- these words are so true. We felt so united with the children while playing the drums… watching the happy children and feeling the same- music is international, everywhere it opens hearts and minds- great experience.

The whole day means new experiences for me - with all sense. To observe the mimic and body language it’s like an epiphany. It would be interesting to talk with the drummer about his living experiences on this island.

Life is a rhythm. Rhythm unites people. The simplicity in complexity.

We are born with a rhythm. The first thing we do when we come to this world is breathe. And we breathe in a rhythm. The last thing we do when we leave this world - we breath. In a rhythm... We walk in a rhythm, talk in a rhythm, work in a rhythm. Sometimes we can get off it but we always return. Feel safe, feel united, feel supported and encouraged by others next to us that live in a same rhythm.
