Illescas belonged to the archiepiscopal lordship until 1575, the year in which it would definitively pass to the royal jurisdiction. During the previous centuries there had been frequent disputes between the town and the cathedral chapter.

It is believed to date from the s. XI. Called Arco de Ugena, also known as “Puerta de Ugena”, its construction is attributed to Alfonso VI, king who recovered the town for Christianity in the year 1085.

The temple was inaugurated on June 4, 1600 to the great joy and expectation of all Illescanos. The exterior of the temple is built with typical Toledo rigging, masonry and brick walls flanked by limestone pilasters.

It is a rectangular-shaped brick factory building, consisting of two floors decorated with ten semicircular arches on their respective aisles. It is in the neo-Mudejar style. It occupies the site of what was a prison since 1582, later repaired and expanded in the 18th century.

The church stands out for its tower, in the Mudejar style. In detail, none of the Mudejar towers of Toledo would have reached, according to Lampérez, the variety of ornaments in its five zones, the slenderness of the windows, with lobed arches, the proportion of the upper arches, of similar arches, on small columns of enamelled ceramic, the harmonious distribution of hollows and massifs. According to Lampérez, the structure would be left with the finishing that they put on it in the 17th century, consisting of a cornice, an arrow in the Felipe IV style (typical of the time, in Madrid and Toledo) and four pinnacles.

A place of recreation for the kings, it came to lose royal favor due to the War of the Communities, where the Illescan Francisco de Guzmán was captain of the comunero army of Juan de Padilla's companies. At the beginning of the 19th century, French troops dismantled a monastery of barefoot Franciscans. Named at least since the eighteenth century, it retains a cross in the place that must have been an older one that was already mentioned in the cadastre of Ensenada.
