Tom Buchanan in this story was introduced as a wealthy man. He had big features and muscles that almost made you feel a bit intimidated. He had many accomplishments and was considered almost as a national figure. Tom Buchanan knows Nick because they went to college together. They describe him as “most powerful”, and “a national figure”. The words used to describe Tom that stood out to me most was “ straw-haired man”. Hearing this word doesn’t sound familiar and when I hear it I think of dry hair that isn’t taken care of. There are many colors mentioned in this chapter some of the colors that stood out to me were white palaces. They used white to show the cleanliness of the palace and called it “fashionable”. Another color that stood out for me was gold French windows. They were told as glowing to make it more intense. The last set of colors that stood out to me was the red and white mansion. This mansion is described “cheerful”. Throughout the chapter I notice they use the color white as a happy and fresh color, the wine and red is more intense and used more as a home color, the gold is a bright and glowing color used when there’s comfort.

Nick carraway. This name has already been brought to my attention a lot and it's just the first chapter! What I know so far about Nick is that he is the narrator but a narrator that can't see all sadly. Nick is a graduate from Yale and is considered to have “old money” which is usually money that is inherited from family. Nick went to college with Tom Buchanan and he lives in a rented mini house in the middle of huge mansions. I am extremely curious as to why he chose to have a little house around all these mansions and what made him choose that house if he is considered to have some money. It seems to me that Nick is a reliable narrator and he seems very honest.

There are four major settings in the book, The Great Gatsby. East Egg is wealthy and very nice, while West Egg represents a new form of wealth. The characters who live in East Egg are Tom and Daisy Buchanan. West Egg is where Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby live. The Valley of Ashes is an industrial wasteland that is by “a small foul river” (p.27). The Valley of Ashes is like a farm that grows ashes into ridges, hills, and grotesque gardens (p.26).The characters who live in The Valley of Ashes are Dr. TJ Eckleburg, and George and Myrtle Wilson. New York City was described as adventurous and racy (p. 62). The characters who visit New York City often are the Buchanans, and Nick Carraway works in New York as a bond salesman. A change that I noticed with a character in this chapter was Tom becoming more secretive with Nick. As Nick and Tom would travel to New York, Nick would find out that Tom has an apartment with his mistress, which showed that he was becoming more careless.

In chapter 2 we get to see Tom's mistress. Nick Carraway for the first time meets Tom's mistress in the valley of ashes. Her name was Myrtle Wilson. With a long day ahead Tom and Nick take a train and Tom decides to jump off so that he can introduce Nick to his mistress Myrtle, which Tom calls “his girl”. They end up at a repair shop owned by Myrtle's husband (so we now know she is also having an affair), and everyone ends up going to Myrtles and Tom's apartment they have together ( which is absolutely crazy) . In this chapter I have seen how sneaky Myrtle is and how she has little to no respect for her husband because he doesn't have as much money as Tom, and that is the reason she is with Tom because of money.

In this novel social class is presented with different classes. There is old money, new money, and no money. For example Fitzgerald presents 2 different types of wealthy people, the people who were born into wealth who have “old money”( The Buchanans and Jordan) . These people were given money and don't have to work for what they have. And then there are people with “new money” who seem to be arrogant and less caring to people around them. We see that the “new money” people just showed up to places as they pleased, and just made appearances for show. “Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party” (Pg45). This is an example of how these people were there for the party and nothing else. You would think that since some of the newly wealthy people had gone through hard work to get where they are they would have been more friendly and compassionate, but that's not the case. Jordan Baker was born into wealth and she definitely fits the obnoxious rich person standard that a lot of people have. We also notice how she doesn't really care about the consequences of things in this novel. As Jordan is driving she says “ They’ll keep out of my way” (pg 64). Jordan seems to think the world revolves around her and she shows that careless attitude a lot of us have been seeing.

In chapter 3 Gatsby throws a party that has quite the hidden meaning behind it. We see that Gatsby throws a party and he lets total strangers come in, he has no idea who they are and they don't know who he is. The reason people go to these parties is for a good time and it's usually the upper class people. If you notice I never used the word “invited” because Gatsby never invited these people. Gatsby sent out one invitation and that was for Nick. Why did he only send one to Nick? Is it because maybe he feels he can trust Nick? Towards the end of the party everyone bails and no one talks to Gatsby. We realize that Gatsby honestly doesn't have friends and the people who showed up were only there for the party not to be Gatsby's friend.

As we read the book we seem to all notice that Mr. Wolfsheim is not the best person to be hanging around. Mr.Wolfsheim is known for possibly rigging the 1919 World Series, and has an extreme gambling problem (he belongs in jail for sure). Knowing this myself and knowing that Gatsby is aware makes me wonder why Gatsby sticks around him, and to be honest makes it harder for me to really get to know who Gatsby is. Why would Gatsby stay around if he is trying to protect his image? The image Gatsby is trying to protect is definitely nowhere near gambling and cheating the World Series. Gatsby is protecting this image of graduating from Oxford and being awarded medals in World War I by multiple European countries. This also makes me wonder if Gatsby is also involved in illegal activity because of how chill he is around Wolfhseim. Gatsby has been throwing parties after parties that have no purpose, making sure everyone there is enjoying themselves having the time of their life even though he has no idea who half of these people are. In Gatsby's mind it seem as if as long as they know he is the one making sure they are having fun then he is winning everyone’s approval. My question is what is Gatsby really doing and what is he hiding?

I want to take time to talk about Gatsby and Daisy, and what we know so far. So far we have seen that as of now Daisy has remained faithful to Tom but we obviously know Tom is not. Gatsby has revealed his feelings for Daisy to Jordan Baker and we learn there might have been a past connection between the two. We know that Gatsby met Daisy at Camp Taylor where he was stationed. At this time Gatsby was not wealthy and had very little money. I wish I was able to talk to Daisy and maybe get some insight information. We know she's in love with materialistic things, but do you think she would have dropped all that for a life with Gatsby? I honestly hope in the future chapters we get to know more about Daisy's feelings.

When The color green is being used in this story Gatsby mentions wealth and how Daisy would like him or he could grab her attention because he has money, and he has valuable items. We as readers can notice envy and jealousy can definitely relate to Gatsby, he is raged with envy just because he is not with Daisy. We definitely see many things we can symbolize that connect to Gatsby personally. Going back to our culture and considering how times have changed I personally can see there are many similarities with our generation even 100 years later ! We will see many people only getting in relationships for money and many people even throwing parties full of people they don't know just to gain the respect of the public or be known as cool (which can 1000 percent relate to Gatsby). But, we can't always see the bad in everything and in this case the color Green actually can have great meanings. Some people may see the color green as good energy, purity, and growth. When I hear green I think about how far I've come in life and the growth I have been through and very great energy. So if there's one thing I learned from this chapter is to know everything and even colors can have its positives and negatives, it just depends on the way you look at the situation.

“More money more problems” I often hear this sentence when people see affairs or they are watching reality TV shows and I want to take a step back to think about whether having a lot of money is a good thing or bad thing when it comes to social class. We see in the great Gatsby how Tom having money has a hold on Daisy which may have caused her not to end up wanting to be in a relationship with Gatsby. We also see that Myrtle Wilson is most likely with Tom because he has money to provide her with materialistic things that maybe her husband who owns the car repair shop might not be able to provide her with. So here we see two different relationships broken because of money. But, I don’t want to blame money for everyone’s actions because honestly Tom and Myrtle could just be bad people in general and money has nothing to do with it. Nowadays we see people with money. Some people need to have materialistic things and others can live without it and don’t think it is essential for life. I honestly think it is everyone’s own opinion whether they think money can come with a lot of problems or it’s just the people not the money.

Looking at how Gatsby has described his life 2 different ways it makes me wonder what makes him feel like he can't be truthful about his childhood. The way Gatsby originally described his family is different from what he ends up telling Nick. Gatsby lies about the origin of his wealth and says he grew up in a wealthy family, that his family were mid-westerners, and he inherited his fortune from them. Gastby later explains that he lost that money from the war. Nick does a bit of digging and eventually comes out with the truth on how Gatsby got his money. Nick notices he probably is doing illegal business if he is where he is now, and becomes more suspicious of Gatsby. We know Gatsby became more motivated to become wealthier when he met Daisy so it makes me wonder, if he never met Daisy would he even be doing illegal business like he is now?

In this chapter we see how Gatsby lied about the way he grew up and we see Nick unfold these lies and come to the truth. Reading this makes me wonder what made Gatsby feel like he needed to lie? Maybe the answer to this is that he did not feel welcome or maybe he just wanted to make a friend. I don’t think we will know if maybe Gatsby would’ve been truthful since the beginning; he might have made more friends just being himself or if lying actually got him the attention he needed. If I wanted to make a friend I would be truthful from the beginning so that right from the start I could be myself and build a relationship with someone who understands me and possibly become best friends. When you are honest about your past it is almost relieving and makes you feel safe because you would have nothing to hide and most likely they might appreciate you no matter what. So I definitely think Gatsby could have handled the situation differently and could have been honest from the start and Nick would have never had to expose the truth.

Daisy on the other hand loves the idea of wealth, fortune and status more than she could ever love Gatsby although we know there are still feelings there. Tom is in fact in love with Daisy , but in his own way. Daisy made Tom feel strong and when she depended on him that made Tom feel strong and worthy. Nick is in love with Daisy only for a short period of time and is struggling with loving Jordan. In this novel the idea of love is 100 percent the biggest love triangle I have ever seen and all the relationships are extremely complicated. Love in this novel seems very unromantic, unstable, and makes you feel like love doesn't last. It almost seems like Fitzgerald lost her faith in love and it shows when reading this novel.

In this chapter we see a lot of Gatsby’s blind love. We see how Gatsby is so in love with Daisy that he will push the limits to make sure he achieves his dream of having the perfect life with her. Love in the great Gatsby is quite difficult and makes you not want to pursue a relationship just because of all the false hopes this novel conveys. I noticed that the author repeats a lot of sadness and kind of false hopes within the characters and it shows the message that not everything lasts. If I could give any advice to Gatsby on his love life I would definitely say he needs to consider being truthful with everyone around him and also making sure he takes care of himself and doesn’t act reckless with money.

When I think of the color blue I think of tear drops (which are also on the cover) and I start to feel the sadness or depression coming from the cover of the book. We notice in this book it didn't really come to a great ending and I feel like that's why there was a little bit of light on the cover because throughout the story there was still hope. I definitely think that the little bit of gold and bright colors symbolizes the hope Gatsby and a lot of the characters had in life. To me the eyes symbolize how maybe there was just one person this whole time that was kind of just stuck in the middle of things and he was the only one who really got to see the truth in people and I think that person is Nick.

It is crazy to think that Gatsby passed. Gatsby was shot to death in a swimming pool in his mansion by Myrtle Wilson’s husband. Gatsby was thought to be the hit and run driver who killed his wife even though it wasn’t him it was actually Daisy. The things that Gatsby would do for love and the links so that he would go cause his death sadly and I can’t imagine how Daisy feels or if she is simply going to just get over it. It sucks to think that Gatsby never truly had a chance with Daisy but if we think of it positively it ended the obsession that he had with Daisy and might cause more people to actually grow and mature.

The ‘American Dream’ is that anyone regardless of where they come from or what social class they belong to can attain their own version of success and happiness in which everyone is given equal opportunities. In the novel the ‘American Dream’ is shown with characters trying to obtain wealth and basically they want to climb the social ladder. Gatsby for example his goal was to impress Daisy with wealth and status, having this goal pushed Gatsby to become where he is now and steps closer to achieving what would be the ‘American Dream’. “they were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness” this quote said by nick just shows those who had money already given to them are careless and reckless and some (i mean SOME) of those who have “new money” are maybe less careless.

It is angry to think that a man with great passion and a heart full of love is not being missed by those who attended his parties. All the people who attended his parties will miss the idea of a fun party on the weekend, not the person who threw it. Although Gatsby had his rough moments, Gatsby in my opinion is considered a great man. I would consider him a great man because he achieved his dreams of wealth and he got to be around the woman he loved even though he may have not been able to be in a relationship. The way Gatsby was able to make dreams great even though he had flaws was inspiring and I think it definitely taught a lot of people not to give up on your dreams even though some of them might not be successful. I genuinely had a great time reading this book and it taught me to look at the positive things in life and not to take advantage of the people around me.

The ideas in this text are related to some ideas I see in people now. I have seen many people fail to accomplish their goals such as playing a sport and not winning, trying to win over or impress someone that you were interested in and it never ends up working. Some people could take those losses and turn it into something to make them better, and others would fail and never try to succeed in something else. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby's failure to achieve the American Dream kind of seemed like his goals were unachievable . But, I do think Gatsby achieved many other things such as wealth and success even though those goals were achieved by participating in organized crime and distributing illegal items. An experience that I have seen firsthand is the need for materialistic items. I had a family member who used materialistic items such as clothing and accessories as a way to fit into society. I saw this bad habit turn into debt, and I watched my family members slowly learn that materialistic items can’t truly make you happy and what truly makes you happy is building relationships with those who care about more in life.

The text in this story reminds me of the song” A Million Dreams” by Pink. In the Great Gatsby Gatsby fails to accomplish his goals which is the American Dream. Gatsby was wasting his time waiting for people’s approval and all his materialistic items never made him truly happy. Gatsby had dreams of winning Daisy’s approval, and he constantly tried to impress her with money and throwing parties even though he had no idea who any of those people were. While Gatsby was caught up in his emotions, he never got to step back and appreciate all the things he had accomplished and dreams that he had accomplished while trying to impress Daisy. In this song she sings of how she has a lot of dreams and when she shuts her eyes she sees the visions. Gatsby can relate to this because of all the dreams he is trying to accomplish as well. The singer is ready to take on the challenges in order to accomplish her goals and I feel like that relates very well to Gatsby and the way he tried to accomplish his dreams.

The ideas in this text relate to the world in many different ways. This text relates to the past because of how it is set up during the time of the roaring 20s (which was the 1920s). Nick's character in this story represented what a stable person back then looked like, and when the stock market crashed in the 1920s people would attack people in their community like Nick. This novel relates to current society because it represents human mistakes and shows the reality of things. Gatsby can relate to the future in my opinion when it comes to materialistic things. Nowadays people are very set on having big expensive items, but hopefully the future will be people wanting more meaningful items or relationships instead of what benefits them financially. After reading this novel a lesson I learned is to control your emotions because they have shown us what emotions can do to someone if you have no control or respect for others.
