Puerto Rico, nicknamed the island of enchantment has quite an interesting history. In 1493, Christopher Columbus came to the island which at the time was home to the Taíno people. The Spanish then came over and conquered the island and established a monarchy that lasted over 400 years. During the Spanish American war, Spain had control and was using it as an outpost to defend its other colonies against European attack. Near the end of Spain's control over the colony, Puerto Rico had become a big exporter of luxury crops like tobacco, coffee, and sugarcane. Though the economy was thriving, people were discontented with Spanish rule, so they were granted autonomy in 1897. Not too long after that, the US invaded Puerto Rico and took control of it; naming it an unincorporated territory.

Since Puerto Rico is a US territory, their holidays are the same as ours for the most part. But some of their traditions stand out as unique:

November 19th- Puerto Rico discovery day

This is said to have been celebrated every year since Columbus landed on the island since November 19th, 1493. It commemorates the day that the Spanish landed on the island.

The 4th Thursday- Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving didn’t become a tradition in Puerto Rico until after it became a US territory, with the first thanksgiving being celebrated in the late 1800’s.

December 25th- Christmas Day

Christmas was also introduced by the Europeans after they won the war, but their take on Christmas is a bit different. They take pride in having the longest Christmas celebration in the world, lasting about 45 days.

December 31st- New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve traditions are all about starting fresh. Everyone cleans their houses and does it with a positive attitude; since they believe that their attitude is dependent on how the next year will turn out for them. Some people on the island even throw buckets out their windows to drive away evil spirits.

Thanksgiving-

The traditional thanksgiving meal consists of arroz con gandules (rice with baby peas), baked turkey, baked ham with pineapple, potato salad and Puerto Rican macaroni salad. This is also the day that they set up the tree and decorate for Christmas, this happens before the meal is served. After this Christmas lasts about 45 days, from Thanksgiving till about mid January.

December 25th- Christmas Day

Just like the US, Puerto Rican families get together with their relatives, and some people also visit old San Juan to decorate the streets.

December 31st- New Year’s Eve

This is also a day to spend with family and reminisce about the past year. Pasteles are traditionally served, and made with green plantain masa (flour), stuffed with meat and wrapped in a banana leaf. Coquito is the traditional beverage, which is basically eggnog made with coconut milk.

In conclusion, Puerto Rico is a very unique island with many interesting things to offer tourists: rich heritage, long held traditions, as well as decadent cuisine. I would definitely plan a visit!
