The Portuguese captured the Moroccan citadel of Ceuta on the African coast across the straits from Gibraltar. While he was in Ceuta, he became interested in the continent of Africa.          <description><![CDATA[<div>On November 1. On November 22 they rounded the Cape of Good Hope. In early January 1498 they were located off the shore of Mozambique. By this time many of the sailors were sick with scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency). The expedition rested a month while the ships were repaired. After resuming their voyage, the ships reached Mombasa (now in Kenya) on April 7. On May 20 da Gama landed at Calicut (now Kozhikode), on the southwest coast of India.</div>]]></description>
