Social Engineering is a term that we often hear with cyber as it is an integral component. The premise is often misunderstood as there is an inherent ‘disconnect’ with the term from the technical aspect of cybersecurity. The reality though, is that social engineering is deeply connected and intertwined within almost all cyber attacks. There are many in the cybersecurity space that feel that nearly every cyber attack has a component of social engineering. Study after study shows how the human aspect, studying human behavior, psychology, habits, practices, etc. influences planning and strategy around cyber attacks.

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they give up confidential information. The types of information these criminals are seeking can vary, but when individuals are targeted the criminals are usually trying to trick you into giving them your passwords or bank information, or access your computer to secretly install malicious software–that will give them access to your passwords and bank information as well as giving them control over your computer.

In a social engineering attack, an attacker uses human interaction (social skills) to obtain or compromise information about an organization or its computer systems. An attacker may seem unassuming and respectable, possibly claiming to be a new employee, repair person, or researcher and even offering credentials to support that identity. However, by asking questions, he or she may be able to piece together enough information to infiltrate an organization's network. If an attacker is not able to gather enough information from one source, he or she may contact another source within the same organization and rely on the information from the first source to add to his or her credibility.
