In the late 1890's, the United States felt like they needed to expand its political and economic influence. This led to the Spanish-American War because the U.S. wanted to go the war to expand its international power. At the end of the war, the U.S. occupied Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines but the Philippines resisted American control which led to a two year conflict before they surrendered to American control. The greediness of the American government wanting to expand without European influence as a result of both the Monroe Doctrine and Roosevelt Corollary led to frustration as they were taking advantage of countries.

The central figure in the political cartoon is Uncle Sam. He is characterized as a powerful and greedy figure. In the image, he is shown with a lasso rounding up Cuba and the Philippine Islands. These landmarks are important to the image because they represent what the U.S. occupied after the Spanish American War.

Isolationism is a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially political affairs of other countries. The United States built its empire without becoming entangled in European affairs as their involvement in the Philippine American War. The main point of the Roosevelt Corollary was that the United States' controlling behavior was policing the hemisphere.
