2. What have you done?

This week I started my temporary employment in the Darul Himraz office located in Bangi. I was instructed to start with creating a few posters detailing the tour packages offered by the travel company. Along the process, I learnt numerous creative tips from my supervisor.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

In order to attract people's attention to the contents of the poster, focus need to be given on the choice of colour, arrangement of text boxes and the overall design.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

At first I was quite nervous as I have never been involved in this field. I am glad that I was assigned a simple task in my first week as it helps me to warm up with the office environment and other staff.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I was a bit anxious to mingle with other people considering my introverted personality. Nevertheless, I tried my best to greet everyone cheerfully and show interest in their teachings and conversations. As a result, I was received warmly by the company's staff.

2. What have you done?

This week I had an introduction by senior audiologist to all her staff members at the new workplace called Perfect Hearing in Shah Alam. This workplace is about how they manage people with hearing problem. For the first week they told me to observe what they were doing in a day. Most of the time, I did some works by helping them to check whether the hearing aids is fully functional or not with right serial number before giving out to the patient. It was very tired and exciting to learn more about it.

Points to remember from week 1 is to be confident and asked them if not understand because they really like to share their knowledges

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I feel nervous obviously when first time came into a new workplace environment. I really hesitate at first to come into the workplace even though I came early. At first, I thought maybe the staff members will ignore me along the way but fortunately they willing to share what they were doing in a day. I am really shocked because from my perspective it would be just a simple work but not.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I concerned that maybe one of the staff members will not be comfortable with me. It is just my assumption. If that really happen, I will try my best to approach to all staff members nicely.

2. What have you done?
On my first week at IKN, I was tasked to aid patients in registering for their treatments or consultations of the day. As for patients on wheelchair, I will guide them to their respective locations and wait with them till their relatives arrive.

I also restocked the items such as milk powder, brown sugar, coffee, tea and biscuits at Anjung Budi (an area on the first floor of IKN where food items are offered for free for patients while they wait for their turn for treatment or consultations).

As the only volunteer who speaks Mandarin, I was also tasked to translate questions for the patients and doctors especially at the emergency department.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
As a medical student, translating has been an interesting experience as I put my previous experiences into work. When a non-Mandarin speaking doctor has questions on pain scale, it comes to me naturally to ask the related questions in Mandarin to the Mandarin-speaking patients. I also relate their worries and concerns to the doctors.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I feel useful and an important asset at the volunteer taskforce.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
As it was my first week, I relied on the senior volunteers a lot. I'm thankful for their guidance especially on my first day when I am still not used to where each department is.

I plan to aid at the Positive Image Centre where cancer-related items are sold to patients at a subsidized rate. 2. What have you done?

I am working as a clinic assistant in a GP clinic. The first week was an introduction to GP and the professionals involve in the GP settings and their respective job scope. Certain GP involves family medicine specialist, pharmacist, nurse and accountant. However, in this GP clinic, there is only 1 resident doctor and 4 clinical assistants. In the first week as a clinic assistant, I learn to obtain patient information and their inquiries in the registration counter and others such as explaining the medication prescribed to the patient.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

In the first week, I learned the basic brand name of the medication as some patients could present to the GP clinic just to buy the medication, I also need to remember the medication location and explain the purpose of giving the medication

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I feel really interested to learn new knowledge and gain experience in GP settings.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

At first, it was quite difficult for me to remember or recognize the brand name of the medication as we were thought by their generic name in class. there was also a lot of medication that I have never heard of their name.

I plan to assist the GP in doing procedures such as venepuncture, IM injection, IV line, and help in doing medical checkups.

(interesting case this week: There were 3 cases of shingles and 9 cases of chickenpox, the dr request me to explain about the virus and its basic pathogenesis in layman terms to the patient and I felt useful and happy to explain as we were thought about the virus in preclinical years.)

2. What have you done?
I have joined an online course from coursera regarding Chinese Medicine. For this week, I have learned about the basics of Chinese Medicine including the history of Chinese Medicine, Yin-Yang Theory, Five element theory, Qi and Blood, Meridian and Zang Fu Theories.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
-The Yin-Yang Theory is one of the most fundamental theories guiding the practice of
Chinese Medicine in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
-Together with the Yin-Yang Theory, the Five Element Theory provides the basis for
explaining physiological functions in humans.
-Qi and Blood are two essential components for supporting life activities in the body.
-Qi travels in energetic pathways called Meridians. The network of Meridians not only
serves as a means of delivering Qi to all tissues and organs, but also acts as a
communication network between them.

It was actually quite fun to learn something new and know how different Chinese Medicine can prevent and treat the disease.

I find it quite hard to understand the basics of Chinese Medicine since it is quite different from Modern Chinese. As I was learning online, I had to personally search for answers.

-Able to understand the meaning and importance of "Balance" and "Interaction" in Chinese Medicine.

2. What have you done?

During the first week of EP, I was introduced to the doctors and staff working there. The process went smoothly as everyone was welcoming and I fit right in. I also got the chance to observe while the doctors were examining the patients while able to discuss with them about anything I am not sure of sure such as the patients management. I was also able to get to know common medication dispensed in a primary settings.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

I made sure to obtain important patients information beforehand such as inquiring about drug allergies or any red flags presented at the clinic and inform them to the GP. I also am more exposed to medication especially antibiotics and their indication and contraindication for specific patients and diseases.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

At first, I was nervous as it was a new environment and new people, but the staff and the doctors are very welcoming that I have no problem to fit in. I also do not feel as reluctant as i thought i would in the beginning to go to the clinic because there are quite some interesting and fresh cases that is beyond what i have learned so far.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I realised that my knowledge in terms of patients management pharmacologically is insufficient and i need to read and explore about it more, so i intend to get to know all the medications available at the clinic and their uses.

2. What have you done?

I had my elective posting in acupuncture center. I work as an assistance in the acupuncture center. The Chinese traditional practitioner introduced to me about the settings and job scopes.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

The concept of Chinese traditional medication and medical knowledge we learned are not the same. Chinese traditional medication aims to restore body’s balance and harmony. One of the concepts is hot-cold concept. Health is believed to be a balance between hot and cold elements in the body.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Chinese traditional medication is a field that I had a bit understanding but never learn much. When I worked in a Chinese traditional medication clinic, I realized that there are a lot of knowledge need to be learnt as a Chinese traditional medication practitioner. They not only need to learn Chinese traditional medication knowledge but also some medical knowledge as a doctor.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The difficulties I faced is there are many concepts used in Chinese traditional medication such as hot-cold concept and vital force of life which called Qi. These concepts are not learnt in medical field so, I need some time to study these concepts.

2. What have you done?

I have participated in a campaign ‘Women First Initiative’ which aimed to address the barriers of healthcare for women from marginalized communities in Malaysia, specifically the Sabah Chapter. Preparation work began months ago so I’ll make a summary of what my team and I have done in this Week 1 padlet, while the following padlets will be the execution part.

2. What have you done?

Arissa Jemaima, the campaign director, recruited all the passionate peers from different backgrounds to form the coordinating and field team. After a couple of visits to Sabah, we made up our mind to choose Pulau Kalapuan to be the campaign area. It is a remote island located in the district of Semporna, Sabah. The island is home to almost 2,000 residents, including a mix of local Bajau tribe and stateless communities. We realized the issue of accessibility is the key barrier as the community lives on islands located away from urban areas, where all the state’s healthcare facilities are located. They find it difficult to seek medical care when they need it, particularly in emergency situations, because the journey takes at least 1 hour. This hardship is even more significant for stateless women from the community, who are often charged at a higher cost due to their lack of citizenship. As a result of these challenges, many stateless women in Semporna often resort to using traditional medicine or home remedies to address their health concerns. While these approaches may be effective in some cases, they can also be risky and lead to serious health consequences.

I am concerned about the issue of homebirth safety, particularly for the stateless women in Pulau Kalapuan who opt for this method due to logistical and documentation barriers. This arises due to the community's locale on far-flung islands of hours boat ride from the mainland, disconnected from urban centres' equipped healthcare facilities. This geographical hindrance complicates their quest for medical attention, especially in cases of obstetric emergencies during the home deliveries.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

Since our team consists of volunteers from different social backgrounds, ranging from those who have an 8am-5pm working schedule to medical doctors who need on-calls. The only time that we got full attendance is on the on-boarding day while the rest of the meetings we try to send representatives from each department to make sure that the project is still on-progress. Credits to the feature of google docs, we are able to leave comments on the proposal to our colleagues, so technically we are able to work on the planning sheet based on our own pace.
