Growing up I was never on the internet as much as children are today. Also, I was never taught what Netiquette was. I think it is very important to add a lesson on Netiquette in the classroom curriculum. Children nowadays are using iPads and laptops during school hours. As teachers, it is our jobs to inform our students the "rules" of the internet. Children will overall be safer if we teach Netiquette. By teaching Netiquette, teachers, will be able to integrate the use of technology more in their classroom and outside the classroom. I know, for sure, in my classroom, my students will know and use proper Netiquette. This will make my students succeed to the best ability on the internet for the rest of their lives.

Megan's Netiquette Lesson Plan- Private and Personal Information (Grade 3-5)

If I were to teach a lesson on Netiquette, I would have a lesson plan on how to protect yourself from online identity theft. To begin the lesson, I would ask my students, What types of information do you think is okay to share online publicly, for anyone to see? I assume some responses would be their first name or their interests and hobbies. This will get them thinking about what would be right or wrong to share online. Next, I would give them two key vocabulary words to ponder also. What is personal information and what is private information? After getting responses from my students I would let them know that theres safe personal information and unsafe private information to share online. Some safe personal information that is shareable online is: first name, hobbies, favorite food, opinions, etc. Also, I would let them know about unsafe private information that should not be shared online, like: social security number, address, phone number, date of birth, parent's credit card information, etc. Then, I would ask for more responses on, why would someone want to steal someone else's identity? Some sample responses could be: to steal money, to do something bad, or to hide their real identity. This is where I would introduce another vocabulary word: identity theft. I would explain to my students what identity theft is. And to end the lesson, I would remind my students to think before sharing any information. They should think and question, “Am I giving out information that I should keep private?” Lastly, they should always ask a parent or guardian before going online and giving out any information.

In my classroom, I would put into my curriculum a lesson plan that would teach my students the critical thinking skills to test the reliability and credibility of sources and information even if it is printed, on the internet, or on the television. By teaching my students how to be news literate it will demand journalists and news outlets to have authentic information and sources. Having everyone be news literate will change the way journalism is and it will become better and easier to have credible and reliable news.

After going over the five parts I would pull up a few websites. As a class we would go through the website and see if it meets the qualifications of IMVAIN. After I would ask students if they had any question on how to check if a source was reliable and valid. I would then assign each of them a topic to research and ask them to find good sites according to the IMVAIN standards. I would then go around checking and assisting students to find appropriate information. After I would ask a few students how they new that their sites were good. Lastly I would have them write down individually why they think finding a good reliable and valid site is important. I would also hang a poster of the IMVAIN qualification in the classroom for future reference.

Prior to this lesson I didn’t consider the necessity of teaching students about internet usage. I feel that growing up in the rise of the internet I learned more from trial and error then a did from lessons in school. Growing up I had computer classes but they were mainly on how to use a computer not how to thrive on the internet. Both have value and both need to be taught in schools for students to succeed. Doing this research taught me that there are so many aspect tho using the internet that students will need to be taught. A lot of the information I came across were things that I knew but had never had concretely thought about. Using tools such as the acronym IMVAIN, are very useful and I feel would be good to have posted on the classroom walls as reference, as well and the five tips of netiquette. As a parent I feel this information needs to be taught as soon as they know how to access technology. Things such as privacy and safety concerns are something that must be taught as soon as possible.

Before this project, I really had no idea that there was a set definition on how to behave online. After learning about Netiquette and News Literacy, I have learned that it is really important to teach children how to properly use the internet and how to find reliable and credible sources/information. I personally had learned a lot from researching these topics and creating this project. I feel like many people in the world don't really know how to properly use the internet. By teaching children at a young age the rules and regulations of the internet, many people in the future will be safer when it comes to social media, sharing information, and finding information. Before this project, I did not consider that there were rules and regulations that people should use on the internet. I kind of assumed that people learned on their own time and by being on the internet. And by having lesson plans on Netiquette and News Literacy more and more children will know what is right and what is wrong when it comes to many things online. Overall, this project has taught me that Netiquette and News Literacy is a very important topic for anyone at any age, but especially for children, since technology is getting very important in todays day and the future.
