Laing uses compare and contrast as the method of development throughout the text. An example from the text would be “Operationally, the pencil wins over the computer hands down. You can learn to use a pencil in less than 10 seconds. Personally, at the age of 2, I mastered the technology in 3.2 seconds. To be fair…”. Words like operationally, personally and to be fair are all words that are used when doing compare and contrast. Also, using an idiom like "the pencil ... wins hands down" shows that she is confident in her belief that the pencil is better than technology.

Bonnie Laing uses pathos to convince her readers all throughout the text by playing on frustrating aspects associated with computers. An example of how Laing appeals to her readers' emotions is when she states “…no one has ever screamed, after four hours of creative endeavor, “The - - - - pencil ate my story!” Laing tries to make the reader agree with her point of view by alluding to frustrating moments when computers lose work because it was not able to save. Furthermore, through personification, she insists that computers “eat” stories, and then offers us a solution by insisting pencils would never do the same.

The intended audience Bonnie Laing used for the text “An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil” is probably new writers as she is making points about how the computer would not help with writing the way a pencil can. Bonnie declares that “... make this investment by well-meaning friends who said the word-processing capacity of a computer would make me a better writer, make me a more productive writer, and make me a richer writer.” and how a computer could help her become a better writer. Say it would make me a more productive writer and richer writer would be what new writers would want.

Personally, as a student in a 1:1 school, I do not agree with Bonnie Laing's opinion in her text “An Ode to the user-friendly pencil” . Not only does a pencil and paper affect the environment in a bad way by causing pollution, but it is also much less organized. Laing insists that computers are “piece of molded plastic” (Laing 2). By creating a dull, negative image of the computer she demonstrates her personal bias against technology. Although a computer is obviously more than a piece of molded plastic she puts it down by saying that's all it is. I use computers for everything everyday and it is much better than a pencil because there is so much to do with them.

In Bonnie Laing’s “An Ode to the User-Friendly Pencil”, the method of development is compare and contrast because she is comparing two different topics and using multiple arguments. For example, when the narrator was explaining how portable the pencil is, she states “Compared to a computer, a pencil takes up far less space on a desk and it can be utilized in a car, bathroom or a telephone booth without the aid of batteries” (Laing 9). This shows a compare and contrast structure as Laing is listing the difference in size between a computer and a pencil.<del> She is saying a computer takes up a lot of desk space and uses batteries, compared to the pencil which takes up a little desk space and is portable. </del>This part is a summary of your evidence...

The text “Ode to the User Friendly Pencil” has an author (Bonnie Laing) vs. technology conflict. This is shown from the quote, “My therapist claims that acknowledging the superior partner in a destructive relationship is the first step toward recovery.” Here, the author is discussing her relationship with the computer, and she only uses negative words, like “destructive”, to describe it. Furthermore...
The negative connotation she has when speaking of computers shows her conflict with technology.

Bonnie Laing's diction in “Ode to the User Friendly Pencil” reflects that her intended audience is educated adults. An example of her "adult" diction would be when she said “Just in case you remain unconvinced, I ask you, can you imagine chewing on a computer while balancing your cheque book? And what do computer operators use to scratch that place in the middle of the back where they can’t reach? The defence rests.” First of all, Laing references a cheque book, which means it targets people who would have a bank account -- mainly adults. Students or teenagers don’t really use cheque books at all. MORE ANALYSIS NEEDED

In the text “An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil”, Bonnie Laing uses compare and contrast for a method of development throughout the text. An example would be, “Compared to a computer, a pencil takes up far less space on a desk and it can be utilized in a car, bathroom or a telephone booth without the aid of batteries. You can even use one during an electrical storm” (Laing 9). In this example the author was explaining how a pencil can be used anywhere and then comparing it to the computer. This is an example of compare and contact. The word “compared to” was used in this example, which is one of the words to use when comparing. In this case it’s a pencil compared to a computer. Likewise, the rest of the text was also mainly this text feature as well.

The intended audience for the text “An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil” was probably writers in general.Bonnie Laing as we know was the one who wrote this text, in this case she wrote about how pencils were a better writing tool than computers were.In the text she mentioned how computers would make her “a richer writer”.Therefore, the reason as to why she said all of these things was because she wanted to make it evident that her audience were those who were writers.

In Bonnie Laing’s “Ode to a User Friendly Pencil”, the conflict was the author vs. technology. An example is “My therapist claims that acknowledging the superior partner in a destructive relationship is the first step toward recovery.” In this quote, the author is talking about a “destructive relationship” that is very clearly about her and technology. Not to mention, the use of the word “destructive” makes the tone of her writing very negative, and gives the reader an idea of how she feels about technology.
