He lives on the Isle of Man and has competed Nationally for many years. He had a difficult time during the Covid19 pandemic where he was unable to train in a pool or even leave the Island. He turned to training in open water which led him to outdoor triathlons as they were able to come back earlier than swimming centres. Now as times are going back to normal, I hope to capture him back competing. I want to overlap this with interviews and b-roll of him growing up and living on the Isle of Man. Some of the themes will include growing up on an island and living with a visible disability. Ben will be my main subject as the film will follow his life, but I will capture other parts through interviewing key people in his swimming life such as his parents and swim coach. These unique parts of his life will add more depth and themes to the documentary. I want to explore all parts of his life to show how he got to where he is today. The mode of documentary I am planning to use is participatory because I will interact with Ben on and off the camera to help him understand what is needed. This will be fairly easy as we are family and have a good relationship. I may also use an expository mode of documentary and use a voiceover during periods that need introducing or concluding but this will be decided during the edit of the film. I have good access to Ben as he is my cousin, and my family all live on the Isle of Man so travel and accommodation is no issue.

Strong access, good character and potential for emotive storytelling. My initial feedback is find a framework for the story. You may want to consider him having an event in the final third of your film, which the narrative builds up to which will contain jeopardy for the viewer, and along the way getting close to the character to see how it really feels to be him. living in his world. Combining the two effectively would be a strong 20mins film. I am sad that I can't got through with it as it would have been a very good story to tell.
However, I am not worried, I will pick myself up and start my research again for a new documentary idea.

He is happy to go ahead with the documentary. We got to know each other and I learnt more about Scott which helped me decide the story to the documentary. From our conversation, I am going to tell the story of how he became a freestyler.
He had quite a rough upbringing so I want to use that to show how far he has come to become a pretty successful freestyler.

I contacted my subject, Scott Penders, through email about the documentary and whether he'd be happy to be part of it.
I have since met him face to face and have been given full access to him.
I will begin filming in January once I am back in London.
I will focus the documentary on his journey to becoming a freestyler. Starting with his childhood all the way to where he is today. He has had an interesting life so I think it's really important that we start with his upbringing.
Over the next month I will come up with a filming plan with Scott for the new year.

I additionally filmed b-roll footage of his room and some work out footage.
The interviews went well and it got quite emotional. I have looked through some of the interviews and will be sending to Mick for review around the abuse in Scott’s life.

Tomorrow I will be filming Scott training and doing his free styling. I have been told some of his freestyling friends will be there so I will get some vox pops of them if possible.

Then I will just need archive footage from Scott and then all I will have all my footage. Once tomorrow is done I will be in post production stage and ready to edit my documentary.
