Hairspray - I played the character of Velma. This helped me develop on my confidence because she is a very evil character, and so allows me to portray that through my hate speech towards others and body language I give to the other characters. The way she had to dress helped me feel physically confident - especially that I personally loved her outfit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hairspray.jpg

Velma was a character who was always so full of herself, thought she was better than everyone else and was perfectly portrayed as racist, someone higher up (rich & good status), decided that everyone should physically look one way to be beautiful, and wanted her daughter, Amber to be with a man who is white and looks “perfect” in her opinion.

This play was to spread awareness in real life to racism, hate speech and looks. It was also supposed to teach us how much of a big deal this was in the 1960’s (when this film and play was set).

I auditioned for an American and Canadian talent scout, where I had to memorise a commercial script and act as if I’m talking on a commercial. The script was about the advertisement of Acne Patches. After this audition, I got a phone call telling me I was one of the 3 Actresses chosen to go on holiday to meet an agent, then go to Vancouver to take part in a guest role on Riverdale. However I never did this because I could not afford this opportunity at the time.

I started an acting school called PQA, meaning that I was officially part of an agency called Quirky Kidz, where I went to gain further acting experience. I participated in 3 different types of acting; drama and comedy, film and tv, musical theatre. I met amazing Actors and Actresses who had the same passion as me, and every 3 years - they would go to the West End. Last Year, we were due to go there and perform a play called Troubles a Brewin’. Due to Covid, we couldn’t perform. The play was set in the countrysides of America, meaning we would all have to talk in a country Western, American accent. Before our scripted auditions that would decide who gets which character, PQA had to close due to covid and so we never made it as far as the rehearsed dance scenes in the play.

In January 2020, I went to an acting audition with the agency Quirky Kidz. I had a headshot taken to be place on to my port folio, then memorised a script. I was put on a website, where scouts would search for a person suitable to be in their film or commercial.

In this Module, we researched the history of black people and how they used to be treated in the 1900’s onwards and slavery. We also discovered plays that were dedicated to black actors & actresses only, that educated others on what their life was like. The key skills that I developed were some knowledge of black history, and the context and background of some famous black actors who made a name for themselves expressing their personal experiences and being in some of these famous black plays. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmelanmag.com%2F2020%2F10%2F12%2Fblack-british-theatre-awards-makes-tv-debut-on-sky-arts-this-october%2F&psig=AOvVaw2gbAOYvwKDGsgYahWMnmn_&ust=1618567897230000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCPjx07qBgPACFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

Romeo and Juliet

This module was about researching Romeo and Juliet plays, and getting into the background and context of each character, as well as finding out the storyline of Romeo and Juliet. We then had a virtual speaking exam where we got into groups and each had a character to play. Scripted, we rehearsed and performed the lines of that character using our best acting skills. However, in the rehearsal process - we made twirks on the play and script to suit it for a modern day audience. This included translating the old language to modern language, which was definitely a challenge when you could barely understand the old language - it was typically for people our age. In this module, I developed these key skills; better at reading old scripts with the old language in there, better expression as an actress, experience in playing more types of characters. I learnt that you can really change and further evolve a play if you put your mind to it. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thoughtco.com%2Fromeo-and-juliet-scenes-2985044&psig=AOvVaw3gaRF8ylx6p3fTp8qmR_SW&ust=1618568485363000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCKCFhdSDgPACFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

In this module, we researched a play about a girl who was being bullied online by 3 people, and it all started from a friend request she sent out to them to make friends over the internet. Firstly, we received scripts from the play to get used to the idea of being one of these characters and performing this, then we watched a video of the play to know what it’s actually about. We then had a few rehearsal (in person) lessons to rehearse the play and really evolve our characters including body language - thinking about the different staging techniques we learnt e.g. levels. The key skills that I developed throughout this process were; being mindful of character body language and physical techniques that can really show the audience the intentions and personality of the character, expression and loudness of the character to the audience. I learnt about myself that I’m good at memorising a script.

In this module, we learnt about & researched the man himself and the work he did when directing films & TV shows. The main thing we learnt about was the technique he uses to produce a film / TV show episode with the cast, and realised he has a unique way of doing things compared to other producers. We then dived into a particular TV show he directed called “Abigale’s party” and studied the comedy and every character of the film. The key skill I developed was creativity. About myself, I learnt that I’m good at the research tasks.

In this module, we researched different films relating to time and picked out key techniques and events from them to help us develop pieces (in person) relating to time (in groups). With this in mind, we then moved on to doing research on films & shows that involve magic, superpowers. We then started creating little pieces in groups about this theme, then began working on one big production as a whole class with acting & dance skills in there. It was about “powers”, and week by week we would develop this until it’s time to perform it. We planned our time as a class and discussed and created a group action plan.

I started at 13 years old at a dance studio, learning contemporary, modern jazz, theatre and ballet. After a few months, I also started learning hip hop (my favourite style), commercial jazz and got more serious on theatre dancing. I did a few dance performances with all of these styles, and then started taking more the root of theatre dancing.

The productions I did were; (like at school) hairspray (we performed “you can’t stop the beat”), Aladdin, Greece (we performed “greece lightening”), The Greatest Showman (we performed “This is me”), Annie (we performed “hard knock life”). These were entirely just based on dance. However, when I performed hairspray at school (as well), I had dance experience from each routine we did in scenes of the play.

I picked dance as a subject at school and left with a level 2 diploma distinction grade. We did many performances, practical and technique exams. This included me doing solos, duets and trios.

singing - I’m not trained at signing, however there were times I had to do this for my character in theatre such as playing Velma from Hairspray. So in some ways, I’ve learnt these types of performance skills.

Editing - I have a lot of experience in editing. this includes pictures & videos. I use a professional editing app called “video star”. I create different types of lighting, creative transitions, and compose chosen songs to make them sound better. I’m originally self taught, and have been doing this since I was 14 - slowly getting better over time. Public Figure photographers and professional companies ask me to edit any pictures or videos they have. In my previous acting school, PQA - I was asked to use the camera in film and TV, and edit clips from our scenes.

Script writing - I learnt of lot of this in my previous Acting school, techniques etc. I once entered a competition for my script to create a real film from a well known director.
