CT Scans

Computed Technology, also known as a CT scan uses x-ray equipment to create an image of the patient in order to detect a variety of diseases and conditions. This procedure is fast, accurate, and can immediately tell if a bone is broken or if there are internal injuries and bleeding. During a CT scan, the patient lies on a narrow examination table that slides into and out of a tunnel. The devices rotates and in a separate control room the technologist operates the scanner and monitors the exam and usually they can hear and talk to the patient with a speaker and microphone. This procedure has no standard price and it varies depending on where you live. In South Carolina, a CT scan of the chest costs $825-$2,175 and the same scan costs $1,173 in Texas.

PET Scan

A positron emission tomography or PET scan is an imaging test that is used to check for diseases in the body. This procedure uses dye that has radioactive tracers. The tracers are injected into the vein on the inside of the patient's elbow and the body needs around an hour to absorb the tracers before the scan begins. During the scan the patient lies on a narrow table attached to a PET machine. The table moves through the machine and the scan is conducted. Organs and tissues that have absorbed the tracer show when highlighted under the PET scanner, and it is able to show how well the organs and tissues are working. This scan can measure oxygen use, blood levels, and glucose. It's most commonly used to diagnose cancer, heart problems, and brain disorders. For a whole body PWT scan, prices range from $3,300 - $12,000.

MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is powerful magnetic field with radio waves that produces detailed pictures of the inside of the patient's body. It can be used to help diagnose or monitor treatment and is the only one of these 3 scans that can safely monitor a pregnant woman's baby. AN MRI is most commonly used to evaluate the organs of the chest and abdomen, pelvic organs, blood vessels, and lymph nodes. Most units consist of a large cylinder-shaped tube which is surrounded by a circular magnet. The patient lies on a moveable table that slides into the center of the magnet. Unfortunately this scan is often the most expensive, averaging $2,600 in the US. This is due to the advanced machinery it takes to preform this scan.
