What sources can archaeologists consult to prepare for a landscape survey?
Devon has 3 record offices located in Plymouth, Exeter and Barnstaple. The main sources for a broad search of historic records include local libraries, the HER, the sites and monuments records (SMR), NMR, OS maps, aerial photographs, Local and Naval Studies Library, Parish records etc...
Why is this research important?
This research can help determine; the age and scale of a site, who owned the land and surrounding area, this can also be useful in telling whether there is a definite feature or monument and whether there was previous sites there.
What are the limitations of this research.

Tographic Surveys: used to identify and map the contours of the ground and existing surface features such as trees, buildings, streets, walkways, manholes. It may be necessary to show perimeter boundary lines if they are planning for a building development.
Field boundaries: Lots of factors influence the size and shape of a field (e.g.population, topography, farming system and land owner). A survey can be done simply by examining the boundaries, estimating the size, whether it has a ditch, made of stone or earth etc. Record this information using a standardised recording sheet.

Equipment needed- recording sheet, pencil, camera, ranging rod and a detailed map.

Earthwork surveys:
Why are they useful?
Metal Detecting

What role can metal detecting play in a landscape survey? Metal detecting can help to find any objects which are close to the surface that are magnetic. This can help to show depending on what the object is what kind of site is there and also how old it is.
How is this kind of survey organised? First you hav
to do background research on the site and from this you can pick out areas that you want to survey and not just random locations. You use the area topography and other research to find lickely locations. Then check with the landowner that it is okay to conduct the survey. Plan at http://www.ourpasthistory.com/metal/ What can it show us? Depending on what you find you can identify the date of the site and also who would have lived there. You could also look at what they would have done there E.G. What work and how they lived.Metallic objects
E.G. Coins, amour and weapons.
What are the limitations? Can't use on some sites as it is illegal and some sites are protected by scheduling, these are monuments like Stonehenge.
Another limitation is that a metal detector can only detect so far down and also you are only allowed to dig 12-18 inches which is the top soil.
