Cortes arrived at Tenochtitlan and captured Montezuma (The Tlatoani) and kept him alive so he would know how to care for the Tenochtitlans and so Cortes was seen as a guest of the Tlatoani. The people were upset with Montezuma for keeping the Spaniards in Tenochtitlan and elected a new Tlatoani, which then (Once Montezuma died) tried to push the Spaniards out of the city. It didn't work because small pox killed most of the Tenochtitlans and the new Tlatoani himself.
