History - The Uniting Church formed in Australia on 22 June in 1977, after three denominations joined together in a union. Its purpose when created was to inspire people, enliven communities and confront injustice. They celebrate diversity and welcome everyone.

Why was it created? - The Uniting Church is recognised as Australia’s only truly indigenous mainstream Christian movement. The Church stands with the people of the land that searches for spiritual life, justice, identity and dignity.

Role in Australia’s religious history - The Uniting Church formed as a union of three churches: the Congregational Union of Australia, the Methodist Church of Australasia and the Presbyterian Church of Australia.

Impact on society - The Church has employed over 20,000 people who are employed in community service work, aged care, lifeline, hospitals, nursing, family support services, youth services and care for the homeless. It also operates a large range of care facilities such as: aged care, child care and other welfare services.

How has its presence grown? - Uniting Church has 300,000 members and 48 schools. 1.3 million Australians claim to be a part of the association.

What do they believe in? - The Church believes in God as a Trinity - God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. They believe that God is at work, reconciling the whole creation in Christ, and we are called to be co-workers in that vision.

Practices - Baptism is the first sacrament you receive in the Uniting Church if you confess the Christian faith yourself, or presented by your parents/guardians. The second sacrament is Confirmation is an opportunity for those already baptised to reaffirm their faith as adults, to continue in the way of Jesus.

Challenges: Declining membership, ageing demographic, constrained financial environment, strains of sustainability of the Church and there is a loss of trust and confidence in the Christian Church.

Multiculturalism - Uniting Church accepts everyone and anyone who wants to be a part of the religion. They were the first and only Christian religion to accept Indigenous people.

Leadership Structure - The Uniting Church is not organised by a hierarchy, but by groups of men and women who consult together and make decisions by a general agreement. There are four ‘councils’ within the church: Congregational (local), Presbytery (regional), Synod (state) and Assembly (national). Each council has set tasks and has limits on their responsibilities.

Worship Rituals - Community singing and praying, reading from the Bible, breaking bread together and offering collective gifts. The Uniting Church celebrates two main sacraments: baptism and Holy Communion.

Eastern Orthodox- Grace and Billy

History- The Orthodox Church is one of the three main Christian groups. Around 200 million people follow the Orthodox tradition. The Orthodox Churches are united in faith and by a common approach to theology, tradition, and worship. They draw on elements of Greek, Middle-Eastern, Russian and Slav culture. They developed from the Christianity of the Eastern Roman Empire and was shaped by the pressures, politics and peoples of that geographical area.

Factors - The first Orthodox Church in Australia was established in May 1898, in Surry Hills, Sydney, and was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The Greek orthodox was established by the joint efforts of people from various Orthodox backgrounds. In 1924, a Greek Orthodox diocese in Australia was established by the Patriarch of Constantinople, and the first bishop arrived with the title of Metropolitan. In 1959, the status of the diocese was upgraded to Archdiocese. This was followed by a period of significant increase in the number of Greeks migrating to Australia following the Second World War. The Archdiocese has been divided into several districts with an assistant bishop in charge. There are now well over 100 parish communities, a theological college, several monasteries, and church schools throughout Australia.

Role it played in Australia’s religious history- The history of the Orthodox faithfuls in Australia commenced in March 1820, when a Russian Antarctic expedition put into the port of Sydney, where it stayed for three months. It was then, at Kirribilli Point in Sydney, where priest-monk Dionysios celebrated the first Byzantine liturgy in all its glory and colour. The Orthodox Churches were established here for the spiritual and pastoral care of those Orthodox Christians who decided to make their lives outside the traditional boundaries of the mother church.

Denomination and Impact - one significant growth impact of the eastern orthodox church in Australia is that lay people preceded the clergy, particularly the hierarchs, when arriving in Australia and establishing communities in the name of the church. This reversal of what may be regarded as the 'natural' order for establishing ecclesiastical communities. This is a positive impact, The orthodox church is the fastest growing christian denomination in, the

Australian society.

Religious Presence grown in Australia- The Greek Orthodox presence became more acknowledged from 1863 onwards either by visiting monastics who performed mysteries of the Church, or by visiting clergy who came to Australia just before 1898, when the establishment of Greek communities in Sydney and Melbourne took place.

Beliefs and practices differ from others- What makes the Eastern Orthodox different from others is that they believe they confess the true doctrine of God in the right (orthodox) way. The Bible of the Orthodox Church is the same as that of most Western Churches, except that its Old Testament is based not on the Hebrew, but on the ancient Jewish translation into Greek called the Septuagint. Also, The Eastern Orthodox tradition is monotheistic , believing in the existence of one and only one God. An important component of Eastern Orthodoxy is the understanding of God's essence as transcendental, incomprehensible and unknowable.

Adapting to changing religions- the result review of australians are viewing religion mostly as an individual belief but are sceptical of religious organisations. 78% of australians believe

Challenges they face-

Inconsistency- Since the Russian Revolution, the Orthodox church has been in turmoil and administrative conflict. It has multiple overlapping jurisdictions in western Europe and the Americas, and political passions have led to the formation of ecclesiastical organisations with no clear canonical status

Lack of enlightenment- The lack of enlightenment in the Orthodox Church is a glaring problem. The entire body of revealed truths in the church has not been formulated as a whole, and many of the revealed truths have been interpreted in various ways by thinkers and teachers. However, the Ecumenical Synod, which is the highest authority in the church, has formulated some of the disputed truths.

Anti-Westernism- Anti-Westernism is a widespread phenomenon within the Orthodox church today, especially in the Eastern and South-Eastern parts of Europe. This critical attitude towards the West takes different forms and operates in different contexts. Its origins can be traced back to long-standing differences between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires.

Rituals-

The Sacraments (Mysteria) The main set of rituals practised in Eastern Orthodoxy is the Seven Holy Sacraments

Tithes

Worship (Latria) and Veneration (Hyperdulia and Dulia)

Gestures

Prayer

Weekly Observance

What is your denomination and what is its history in Australia? The Anglican church or the church of England in Australia dates back to the colonial settlement of new south wales in 1788. It developed from English settlers and convicts sent to settle down in Australia in 1788. They were accompanied by one chaplain who afterwards more settlers and priests came to Australia and additional dioceses were established leading to five provinces of the church.

What factors led to its creation in Australia? When the first fleet arrived in 1788 the chaplain that had accompanied them was Reverend Richard Johnson who was the first anglican to minister to the new Australian. In later times more convicts were sent to Australia including priests who would join the Anglican church and teach the convicts.

What role has it played in Australia's religious history? After christianity was introduced to Australia in the early 1800s the Anglican church began operating immediately and held a religious monopoly over the country. Which led to other denominations emerging, particularly the catholic church.

How has your religion contributed to Australia's religious landscape? After the Anglican church quickly spread over Australia other priests arriving in Australia started new Australian denominations. Jews, Catholics, Protestants and Pagans were among the first denominations to settle and grow.

What impact has your religion had on Australian society? It has helped birth new denominations and helped Australia to become a more religiously multicultural and diverse country.

How has your religion’s presence grown in Australia over the years? The Anglican Church has doubled in size in the past 50 years. There are now at least 86 million Anglicans worldwide. Societies started the process of transferring control over church matters to local leadership and engaged in missionary work among the indigenous populations of the British colonies. As a result, Anglicanism evolved into an independent group of national churches committed to one another and its beliefs inherited from the Church of England.

How do the beliefs and practices of your denomination differ from one another? Between Protestantism and Catholicism, Anglican concepts seek a middle ground that reflects the balance between the Bible, tradition, and reason. Within this global communion of churches, there are a huge number of variances in Anglican beliefs, doctrine, and practice since the denomination allows a great deal of freedom and diversity.

What challenges does your denomination face in maintaining their presence and appeal to their followers in Australia? The Anglican Church split on August 16, 2022, when Conservatives established the Diocese of the Southern Cross, an Australian breakaway church. Bishop Glenn Davies, a former Sydney archbishop. The split was brought on, among other things, by the attitude on same-sex marriages.

How does your denomination contribute to the wider community through social and community projects? The Anglican Alliance unites, empowers, and inspires the global family of Anglican churches and organisations to meet human needs, fight for a just and equitable society, speak up for the weak, encourage human flourishing and reconciliation, and protect the environment.
