How Donald Trump Helped Turn Teenage Girls Into Political Activists

The central idea of this article is that when something doesn't go your way, then you have a stronger desire to rise up against it. In this article it states that after Trump was elected president, democratic girls started protesting his power the most. They felt that Clinton's loss of the election was an offence to womankind, so they started electing more democratic woman into Congress. There have also been protests against Trump that were organized by democratic girls, both teenagers and adults. Because of all this protests, there has been an increase in the amount of democratic girls who think they will become politically active in the future. Because something they didn't want to happen happened, democratic teenagers are rising up against it.

Political -- Having to do with or relating to politics

Activism -- The policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change

Adolescent -- A person from the age of 13-18

Is it possible

That kids are making up for

The adult's mistakes

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/03/01/how-donald-trump-helped-turn-teenage-girls-into-political-activists/?utm_term=.135150de8470

Greta Thunberg

The Greta Thunberg article was about how an introverted girl started a worldwide climate change movement. She had an uneventful life and had to miss school for an extended period of time because of depression last year. During that time, she started trying to convince her parents to act to address climate change and learned that she was very persuasive, even convincing them to stop flying. She started by walking out of school and standing outside the Swedish parliament building alone and protesting. Now it is a movement with activists from 71 countries and more than 700 places. The article concludes by stating that she has been endorsed by some politicians, while others have attacked her, saying that she is not what she seems and is there to make money.

The main idea from this article is that kids have more power than they think they have in the world. The article is about how an introverted girl started a worldwide climate change movement involving kids. One supporting detail is that the article said, "She has been lauded at the UN," which means that kids can become leaders in movements and effect politicians. Additionally, the girl's dad said, "If this can happen, anything can happen," regarding her actions, which implies any kid could eventually start a large movement if they tried hard enough. Furthermore, the article says, "nobody has proved more effective at that over the past eight months than Thunberg," regarding pressuring politicians to act. This means that out of all of the worldwide climate groups a kid has been the most successful. This evidence proves the theme because it all shows that kids can do more than they think they can and change the world.

Lauded: To be highly praised

Dissuade: To persuade someone to not do something

Introverted: A very shy person that is not very social

Jaded: To become unimportant after occurring or having too much of something

Teen activism will encourage all to be heard.

They will press their issues to all.
The world will be more aware of their word.

For they will not let others be their downfall.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/11/greta-thunberg-schoolgirl-climate-change-warrior-some-people-can-let-things-go-i-cant

I read an informational article about 14 teen activists in 2018 that ‘proved critics wrongs.’ There were 14 different teens that helped solve crises like the Flint water supply, LGBQT, climate change, school shootings, and much more.

Central Idea

I think that the central idea is that more teens like these 14 are appearing all over the world to change it for the better through social media’s, interviews, and starting conversations.

Pieces of Evidence

“ Young people have often been at the forefront of social movements, but in 2018 they dominated social media conversations, news coverage, forced politicians to respond, and made headlines when they voted at historic rates. An exit poll showed about 31 percent of people aged 18 to 29 voted in the midterms, up from 2014's 21 percent,” and

“Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students made headlines for months after the February shooting in Parkland. They began by calling for gun control, and then the floodgates opened. As they organized rallies, walkouts, a voting tour, celebrity partnerships (Cc: Mark Ruffalo), and get out the vote campaigns under the banner March For Our Lives, young people across the country made their voices heard,” show that these teens aren’t just making headlines, there changing the world.

Mari Copeny changed the world at eight when “She brought awareness to the water crisis in Flint when she wrote a letter to President Obama.
Climate Change and Teens

Teenagers are the first generation to be seriously concerned about climate change. These children are learning about it at a young age and doing things about it. They will likely be the first generation to have to live with the impacts of climate change, so they are trying to make the impacts the least that they can. This is one of the biggest issues that teen activism has impacted. The evidence exists that climate change is real and it is hard to argue that the impacts do not matter. Teens are fighting for legislation that could stop or prevent climate change. The problem is that most adults will be dead before the impacts, so they do not care to prevent it. It is necessary that teens do this because otherwise they will have to live a life that is very different from their current life.
