Following Papa's Song by Gianna Marino

Following Papas song by Gianna Marino was published in 2014. This relationship is about a father and son. When the baby whale gets lost he just listens to his papas call for him and he finds his way back that way. This teaches children to feel safe with their family. It reassures them that parents are there to help and nurture. The illustrations bring the text to life and makes you feel how the baby whale was feeling without being able to read. The activity that I would do is have the class describe how the illustrations made them feel. (align to K.RL.CS.6 with prompt and support define the role the authors and illustrators in the telling of the story)
https://www.amazon.com/Following-Papas-Song-Gianna-Marino/dp/0670013153/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Following+Papa%27s+Song&qid=1602629191&sr=8-1

This book depicts a little boy who is trying to learn how to be a lion. He goes through a series of tests that include roaring and stretching and pouncing. When everything doesn't seem to be going right it feels impossible to feel better. At the end of the book the mom promises her daughter that tomorrow will be better and it did get better! I will use this book to talk about angry feelings and what we could do with those angry feelings instead of yelling at everyone.

Daniel wants to know about poetry and so he talks to all the insects and animals in the park to tell him about poetry. There is a lot of abstract ideas in this book. The way the animals describe the poetry are just ideas of what's beautiful to them. This would be hard to understand for a younger class. I would read this to a 3rd grade classroom that already has an idea of what poetry means to them. A good activity would be for the students to try and write their own poem. This is a very important book because it shows that no matter where the child lives you are always going to want to stall at bedtime. It was punished in 2017.

The Mine-O-Saur published in 2007 teaches the audience a lot about sharing. this book follows the Mine-O-Saur around at school. He was a very greedy dinosaur and took every toy away from everyone. After he doesn't share you see the consequences of his actions. First he was late coming in from recess and then when he finally did want to share the other dinosaurs didn't want to play with him. The illustrations in this book give a lot of support for the text. This book best supports kindergarten students. This is the first time many of them are learning to share. I would then talk about it with the students. I would ask questions like "has someone ever not shared with you?".

This book published in 2010 is about the relationship between the tiger and the boy. It tells about the frustrations of the little boy when the tiger keeps interrupting his reading in different ways. The book ends with the tiger finally not being disruptive by listening to the boy read him the book. Some of my students could relate if they have a younger sibling. They have also probably been the tiger. This book teaches patience. This book really helps children understand how they feel when someone interrupts them. The illustrations in this book really help the audience understand exactly what is happening. This book is best for children that are in Kindergarten. A great activity for this book would be letting my students talk about ways that would be more appropriate ways that the tiger should've acted. When it said "some people watch the world through their ears", it is going to be hard to understand phrases like that. Phrases like that are going to have to be explicitly explained. There are multiple levels of meaning in this book. The theme of this book is taking a deeper look at different backgrounds. The grandma keeps reminding the boy of all the good things about their life. It is very motivational. For this book I would read it to a first grade class. He really liked his wings except he wanted to be normal so he always wore a coat. Until one day when his parents encouraged him he could take it off. The moral of this story is that just because something makes you different it isn't a bad thing. Students might like this book to feel better about what makes them unique. I would read this to my kindergarten class. The text is easy to comprehend. The illustrations are interesting because it is black and white except for Normas character. It is an interesting contrast that makes his character pop more. I would try and have an open conversation with the students about what makes them unique.

Dr. Temple Grandin is a scientist who has autism. The students need to understand background knowledge before you start to read this book. The Girl Who Thought in Pictures is a nonfiction biography published in 2017. In the back of the book it shows a timeline of Temples life. You could use this book to talk about timelines. A great activity would be to use a timeline and ask them to label their own timeline and talk about what makes it great that they're different as well. The age range for this book is 5-10 year olds. I would probably read it to a class of 2nd graders based on their reading levels.
https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Who-Thought-Pictures-Scientists/dp/1943147302/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=The+Girl+Who+Thought+in+Pictures&qid=1602702965&sr=8-1

This is a beautiful true story published in 2007 is the story of the baby penguin Tango having two dads. I don't think it is ever too early to teach about different family dynamics like this. The best age range for the picture book And Tango Makes Three would be ages 4-8. The text organization is clear but it is lengthy. You would need to really have your students paying attention to understand this book. The activity would be having a conversation about what different families look like.

This picture book was published in 2013. It tells the story of Stanley who tries to find his school classmates all by himself. The book is a great book to read when you are talking about the ocean. The style of the text is easy to follow. The illustrations really help the reader and audience feels the way Stanley is feeling. This book is best suited for a Kindergarten classroom. A great activity would be to create mini lessons teaching about how large the ocean is. (aligned to K.W.TTP.1 use a combination of drawing and writing to compose opinion pieces.)
https://www.amazon.com/Bravest-Fish-Matt-Buckingham/dp/0439025621/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=The+bravest+fish+saves+the+day&qid=1602695505&sr=8-1

The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes

The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes was published in 2019. It follows a little boy through his first day of Kindergarten. It provides confidence for any child listening to this book. There are a lot of royal words in this book like "magnificent" and "bravery". The text is pretty significant so I think it could be had to comprehend without the illustrations. To show that the students did understand what was going in in the book, I will ask them to draw an important scene of the book. (aligned to K.W.TTP.3 with promoting and support use a combination or drawing and writing to narrate a single event.)
https://www.amazon.com/King-Kindergarten-Derrick-Barnes/dp/1524740748/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=The+King+of+Kindergarten&qid=1602697070&sr=8-2

This quirky book published in 2010 tells the narrative of Pete the Cat and his shoes. It is a book that has multiple layers. Not only do you read the text but also you can sing some of the text as well. This book is best suited for children that are 5-8 years old. It depicts an important life lesson that if something doesn't go your way it will still turn out to be okay. With this book I would like to use technology to help them understand and comprehend the book. (aligned to K.W.PDW..6 explore a variety of digital tools to produce and share writing.)
https://www.amazon.com/Pete-Cat-Love-White-Shoes/dp/0061906220/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Pete+the+Cat%3A+I+Love+my+White+Shoes&qid=1602697755&sr=8-2

This is a very emotional driven book. A lot of children can relate to this story. Most of the time they think they are alone with this feeling. This book will show them that they aren't alone. The text is complex but the use of graphics help the audience understand. This book is best for ages 5-7. The students could draw what that little bit might be feeling to better understand and empathize. (aligned to K.W.TTP.3 use combination fo drawing and writing to explain a scene.)
https://www.amazon.com/Knock-My-Dads-Dream-Me/dp/0316209171/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Knock+Knock%3A+My+Dad%27s+Dream+for+Me&qid=1602698808&sr=8-2

This book follows Papa on his attempts to make a mechanical fish. It teaches students to not give up even when things are really hard. Comprehension would be something I would focus on for this book. Focusing on causes and effects is important with a new invention. This book also has a lot of onomatopoeia usage. This brought the book to life. This book is longer thus making it harder to sit down with kindergarten students. It would be hard to have them focus for the whole book. (aligned to ask and answer questions to seek help).
https://www.amazon.com/Papas-Mechanical-Fish-Candace-Fleming/dp/0374399085/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=PaPa%27s+Mechanical+Fish&qid=1602699320&sr=8-1
