The Maiden’s Tower is a tower built on a small islet and it is the symbol of Istanbul. There are many legends about it but according to the most well-known one, one of the Byzantium kings had a daughter. A seer told the king that when his daughter turns 18, she would be bitten by a poisonous snake and die. The king didn’t want his daughter to die, so he built a tower on the sea. One day, one of the servants brought the 18-year old princess a basket full of grapes, but there was a poisonous snake in the basket as well. The servants didn’t notice it so it bit the princess, killing her in the process. It is not clearly known if it is true or not; but the tower is one of the most beautiful things that were ever built, that’s for sure.

Hagia Sophia is one of the most important symbols of Istanbul. This masterpiece, which has survived for 1500 years, manages to fascinate those who see it and even take it to the past. However, although we admire this masterpiece very much, we do not know much about the history of Hagia Sophia. That's why we will tell you everything you need to know about the history of Hagia Sophia from past to present.

Hagia Sophia is a religious building that is very important for both Christians and Muslims. Hagia Sophia served as a cathedral for 900 years throughout its history. In the following years, it became a mosque for about 500 years after the conquest of Istanbul. Here's what you need to know about the history of Hagia Sophia since the day it was built ...

Hagia Sophia: the construction of the magnificent church

The construction of Hagia Sophia
The history of Hagia Sophia begins before Hagia Sophia, which we see the completed version. The first emperor of Byzantium, Constantine the Great, wanted the First Hagia Sophia to be built. The first Hagia Sophia was opened on February 15, 360, by the son of Constantine the Great II. Constantius did. However, the church was destroyed by burning on 20 June 404. After the first Hagia Sophia was destroyed, the emperor II. Theodosius wanted the Second Hagia Sophia to be built on the site of today's Hagia Sophia. The church was opened on October 10, 415. However, the Second Hagia Sophia was destroyed on 23 February 532, like the first church. Thus, we learned about the oldest history of Hagia Sophia.

Sümela Monastery is one of the most important places of Trabzon with its historical texture. The building in Altındere village of Maçka district of Trabzon was built on the slope of a mountain. The Greeks gave the name Panagia.
Sümela Monastery, built in 365-395 AD, is in Cappadocian churches style in Anatolia. It was first built for church purposes and converted into monastery. However, there is no information about this transformation. According to the narratives, St. Luke, one of the students of Jesus, saw Mary in the place where this monastery would be built, holding the baby from the arms of Jesus. After that, they came to Trabzon and made the church in the place seen in the dream.
The monastery used as a police station in the 14th century was left as it was in the Ottoman state.
On April 18, 1916, during the Russian occupation period, we entered our territory with the conquest of Trabzon, even though it was entered with the dream of establishing the Pontus State. The maintenance of the historic building, which was abandoned by the Ministry of Culture, has been carried out lately.

The mausoleum consists of 2 parts: the Peace Park, which is inspired by Atatürk's saying "Peace at Home, Peace in the World" and the Monument Block, which contains the most important parts of the building complex. Consisting of a lion road, ceremonial square, mausoleum and ten towers on an area of 750 thousand square meters, Anıtkabir is located at an altitude of 907 meters. Ata's tomb is located in the burial chamber about 7 meters below the symbolic sarcophagus made of 40 tons of solid marble. You can also see the graves of Cemal Gürsel and İsmet İnönü.
On the other hand, for Anıtkabir, on this hill with an altitude of 906, which was known as Rasattepe in the past due to the observatory on it, In the 12th century, there were tumuli (tombs) belonging to the Phrygian civilization that established a state in Anatolia. After it was decided to build Anıtkabir in Rasattepe, archaeological excavations were carried out to remove these tumuli. The artifacts extracted from these tumuli are exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. A competition was held in Anıttepe with 47 projects from various countries. At the end of the competition, considering the way of reflecting national feelings and suitability for the terrain, Prof. Dr. Emin Onat and Assoc. Ahmet Orhan Arda's project was deemed appropriate. It was built between 1944-1953.

The walls are the main reason why Dubrovnik is well known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. The city of Dubrovnik is completely surrounded with defensive walls and forts, including the Old Port. The walls run uninterrupted for 1940 meters (6365 feet) in length, encircling most of the City, and reach a maximum height of about 25 meters (83 feet). Like Rome is well known by Rome Colloseum, Walls of Dubrovnik are pretty much the same for Dubrovnik. They were built through the history in times when there was a danger of foreign attacks over the City and the Dubrovnik Republic. The history goes back to the Middle Ages. In the 9th century, Saracens besieged the city for 15 months. The earliest settlement upon the islet od Laus was protected by walls. These are the facts that the City was well fortified in that time. The City first spread over the uninhabited eastern part of the Laus islet. During the 9th and the 10th century, the eastern section was included within the defense walls. Nowdays it is also well known because of filming of popular series

Game of thrones.

Located at the southern tip of the Istria peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, Pula is a popular destination that has been attracting tourists as far back as ancient Roman times when fans flocked the city’s amphitheater to watch gladiator fights. Having been ruled by various government powers over the centuries, Pula today belongs to Croatia, and is best known for its wealth of Roman ruins and mix of cultures.

Pula is a vibrant city offering plenty to see and do. The city’s star attraction is the 1st century Roman amphitheater. Known as the Arena, the amphitheater is one of the largest and best-preserved of its kind in the world. Every July, the Arena is host to the Pula Film Festival. Other significant historic structures include the old city gates, arches, monasteries, a Byzantine chapel, a Venetian fortress and the Forum, the city’s main square, which is surrounded by Roman architecture and temples.

Pula’s natural beauty of rolling countryside and sun-kissed beaches offer outdoor fun and adventure. The nearby Brijuni National Park and farming villages are also great places to visit, while the turquoise coastal waters and sandy beaches offer fishing, sailing, swimming, snorkeling and diving among ancient vessels and World War I warships.

Rovinj
One of the most 'photogenic' towns in the Mediterranean, once a fishing town, today is a tourist resort. At a distance of some 40 kilometres from Pula, Rovinj-Rovigno has long been known as the town with favourable and beneficial climatic features. So, today its people are still proud of this long tradition and 'fight' for the title of 'healthy town'... The rest is nature’s work. The entire coastline, with its twenty-two islands is an area of protected natural heritage.

Delos
According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. Apollo's sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece and Delos was a prosperous trading port. The island bears traces of the succeeding civilizations in the Aegean world, from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the palaeochristian era. The archaeological site is exceptionally extensive and rich and conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port.
