Rebecca Nurse joins in on the dispute about the girls dancing and Betty not being able to wake up.

Rebecca sounds like a very wise old lady. She immediately tells Giles keep his mouth shut because

he is known for his unruly behavior. Rebecca tells Putnam that she is very experienced with children

considering the fact that she has eleven children and is twenty-six times a grandma. Rebecca likes to

keep things peaceful, like when Proctor and Parris talk about enemies of Parris, Proctor says "Why,

then I must find it and join"(P.1112) Rebecca comes in and says "He does not mean that" Rebecca in

so far sounds like she is mellow, peaceful, and wise.

Straight from the author's words it says Rebecca is seventy-two, white haired and is the wife of Francis Nurse. She would later be accused of being a witch, we have to consider the fact that the time period showed how the women are always accused of witch craft.

The symbol (at the top left corner) of Rebecca is an Owl on a book, meaning wise. Rebecca is a wise elder of Salem. She knows more than most of the people of Salem and likes to keep things calm and resolved. Rebecca also tries to help solve and discuss the witch craft controversy with the church officials.

Rebecca: "No, you cannot break charity with your minister. You are another kind, John. Clasp his hand, make your peace."

PROCTOR: "I have a crop to sow and lumber to drag home."

Rebecca is saying that because everyone in Salem is very religious and no one should break away from their religion. John is not close with the church and doesn't intend to. Proctor knows that Rebecca only said that because she didn't want him and Parris to have a fight.

It shows that Rebecca does not like to have violent altercations for whatever reason and tries to avoid them as much as possible
