My big aha was that students push us and try to test us not because they are trying to get away with something, but to test our consistency with our rules. The day after I read this chapter, I implemented this with my student where I remained consistent in my expectations despite some negative behaviors. After I put the responsibility on him to get it together and join the lesson, he came back, joined the lesson and did a great job.

My one big AHA moment when reading this book was thinking about the teachers inner authority. It really is true that students respond to the teachers authority. If the teacher is compassionate and shows respect but can lay down the law the students respond well to this.

I felt the chapter on inner authority was very eye opening for me. I am still working on my inner authority and finding that balance between standing firm yet being caring and compassionate and showing that to my students. Students respond best when we set firm boundaries and build positive connections with our students.

I thought the chapter The Week of School was very helpful because it focused on all of the important things that get done behind the scenes before the first day of school. I also thought giving the students the quiz at the beginning to gauge their interests and abilities was very helpful.
