On February 2,1959 a group of college students nine to be exact planned to go on a ski trip on a mountain that is named Kholat Syakhl meaning “mountain of dead”. Until things took a turn for the worst the mountain truly did keep its name.

The students were found some missing shoes, some with no shoes and some with one on. At the camp site which is where they were staying their tent was cut open from the inside. Their clothes had slight indications of radiation and their skin a orange tint with their hair grey. Many wondered why this was, in the 1950's lanterns or lamps commonly had  ceramic gauze treated with radioactive thorium, they were sensitive and could break easily.
