They move 10-20 miles per hour over the open ocean. Hurricanes originate in the Atlantic basin, which includes the Atlantic ocean, Caribbean sea, and gulf of Mexico. They can also form in the north pacific ocean, and less frequently, in the central north pacific ocean. For a hurricane to be able to form, there has to be warm ocean water and moist humid air in the region. When humid air sis drifting up into a low-pressure zone over warm ocean water, the waters release creating the clouds of the storm. This caused over 60 billion dollars in damage and more than 7 million people lost their power. The number of deaths from hurricane sandy is counted at 147.  Death counts for the U.S. totaled 72 and Haiti was the 2nd most-affected country and had 54 deaths. In October, the path of Hurricane Sandy was correctly predicted by the European center for medium-range forecasts (ECMWF) head quartered in England. This was almost 8 days before it struck the American east coast. Several local weather Services issued "high wind warnings," "Coastal flood warnings," and other watches and warnings as a way of letting people know.
