Brahms was one of the leading musicians of the Romantic era of classical music. He is widely considered one of the 19th century's greatest composers. His piece, "A German Requiem" is often cited as one of the most important pieces of choral music created in the 19th century. He was very popular while alive, and gained great wealth due to his musical excellence. He introduced new harmonic vistas to music, which are still used often today. Brahms was a perfectionist, throwing away dozens of pieces because they didn't meet his standards.

Beethoven (1770-1827)

Beethoven is often considered the "bridge" composer between the Classical and Baroque eras, to the Romantic era of classical music. Beethoven expanded the use of high/low emotions in his pieces, as well as expanding symphony lengths and dynamic contrast. He is also credited for vastly expanding the piano range. Lastly, Beethoven introduced trombones as orchestral instruments, and they are still widely used in orchestras today.
