I've decided to look at my summer wardrobe. After grouping my items together, I've realised my purchasing habits have not changed that much in the past 10 years. My oldest item dates from 2007 and is an embroidered Mexican blouse I bought in Mexico City. My most expensive is a floral dress which cost me £90 purchased in 2012. The items which hold most value are the ones which remind me of an event/occasion. So after time it's no longer solely about the cost. My worst habit is most probably my t-shirt buying as bar 3 t-shirts, all the others were purchased in 2017!

I took a recent photo of the coat section of my wardrobe. Living in London, I think it's important to have a well stocked raincoat section. The second item from the left which is a coat I bought in Japan for roughly £25 is the one I wear most often (on a daily basis) because it was cheap and stylish so I wouldn't feel bad if it got dirty. I hold the most sentimental value to the left most item as it's the one and only time I've ever purchased a luxury item for myself.

What I like about 2 items in this section of my wardrobe are that the middle 2 items are from a second hand shop. I like to visit these shops to re-use items so that I'm not always purchasing new when these gently used goods are just as good.

This is a photo of one part of my closet. You can clearly see it is suffocating...i can't deny i am a mass fast fashion victim. I have definitile more than i need to have. The most expensive item i have is a Manoush dress bought for a wedding in 2012 that costed 650 euros. I usually tend to give away hige bags full of items i am not wearing anymore. I have a pair of Diesel jeans that i personally carry since highschool

Phyllis Sawall - Wardrobe Ethnographic ----------------------------- I own around 120 pieces of clothing (shoes and accessories not included), some of which I have bought secondhand or kept for years already, some also Fair/eco Fashion pieces, however unfortunately the majority of my wardrobe still consists of fast fashion pieces and unfortunately again I probably wear around half of it, most of the time wearing the same few pieces. I am on my way of changing this and haven‘t bought anything in 6 months planning to extend this at least until the end of the year. I will then also switch to buying 90% secondhand, since I think this is the most sustainable option especially when considering that my personal taste still changes continuously. This is also why I regularly removed things from my closet and realized I need to stop buying and figure out my taste and my intrinsic motivation behind consumption first so I can tackle the issue right at the beginning and address change starting with myself. I would guess the oldest piece of clothing in my wardrobe is probably around 8 years old - considering that I‘m 23, I think this period is okay, however there aren‘t too many of the older pieces, but most of it has been bought (and removed) in the last 2 years. Obviously the emotional value of my clothing items therefore is pretty low for most of them, I think I really love a few pieces for their style and have been loving them for years but also a few items are important for me as they remind me of a special event or have a special story. Thus, I don‘t think this emotional value is necessarily only linked to inherited pieces or luxury items but can stick to fast fashion items as well, however you should focus on these things and just cut down belongings and consumption to the minimum making sure you really love and use al of your clothes. This is my goal that I am currently working on

Long sleeved, modest neckline shirts in eco-friendly bamboo are my go to for everyday living in the Middle East.

I keep clothes for an exceptionally long time, leading to overstuffed closets to suit different needs. Living overseas, I don't have the same wardrobe needs I did as when I was in Canada. My professional clothes, dress shoes and heavy sweaters live un-touched in the closet. They are waiting for the day I move home and resume my former life.

My most favourite item is a hand block printed organic cotton top which I have owned for last 7 years. I do not throw away my clothes so most of the pieces in the wardrobe are over 5 years old. This year I added a total of 7 pieces to my wardrobe which is more than usual. Some are second hand and some new. The most expensive item is a handwoven Benaras brocade that belonged to my mom. This piece not only signifies Indian traditional heritage in fabrics but also a statement piece in luxury fashions. I love this item for the very fact that the gold thread brocade work is still in mint condition even after 25 years.

unfortunately, I was one consumer enjoying fast-fashion a bit too much in the past, as I loved shopping. Therefore, I do have a large collection of clothes. However, I have always been very careful with my clothes and take very good care. Therefore, I still have many t-shirts and jumpers from Inditex brands that I have had for the last 5-6 years.
The items I wear the most are definitely jeans (my 2 levis vintage 501 - denim and black colours and my 2 skinny jeans from Liu-jo in also denim and black). As my style has changed throughout the years, I'd say I have removed a good amount of clothing in the last 4 years, however, I have also acquired new items. Thus, I do not think it changed much the size of my wardrobe.
My most expensive item is my Chanel bag which also has big emotional value, as it was a very valued present for me which I know I will keep forever, and will be passed on.
With time and my interest in sustainability, I am now adopting more conscious choices and I have not been shopping unless I NEED that item because I do not own it already. I am also excited to get rid of a large amount of clothing that I do not use any more. I am excited to start building a wardrobe based on quality over quantity.

-Paula Mira

This is because my clothes and shoes are in storage and have been for 6 months whilst I've been living in Spain. What amazes me is that I can hardly even remember what is in storage....does this mean I don't even need it (I mean 20 items is too few but could I live on 50?) I think when I empty my storage unit I will be reconsidering every piece before it goes back in my wardrobe. It's a fab idea to show you that you don't need much....just quality

Having just moved apartment, my clothing is currently residing in large suitcases, of which there are 5! This is definetly too many clothes for one person, however I find working in fashion that sometimes the temptation of sample sales at work proves to be too much. In terms of the items i wear the most, it is a few pairs of trousers that fit really well. There are a few pieces in my wardrobe that have emotional value, such as an Aran sweater from the 90s that was my mums. This is a piece I will never throw away and I wear it if i know i am going to have a challenging day, almost like a wearable security blanket!

I have over 180 + items in my wardrobe and they range from new pieces to vintage pieces, to some items that are more than 20 years old. I have been pregnant on and off for the last 3 years so I have only bought about 4 items in 3 years which is amazing. After having kids I no longer wear half my wardrobe and it makes you think about all the money you spent. The most expensive thing in my Wardrobe is a designer Wetsuit. This course has made me realise how much i don't wear and the cost that has had. I am certainly rethinking the way i buy things and have a rule that anything coming in needs to replace something going out so hopefully this way my wardrobe doesn't get any bigger. Also items are donated to those in need and second hand shopping is now a common practice for me.

I own around 70 items, 5 pairs of shoes and 6 items of jewellery. I have never been a fast fashion victim and I only shop about twice a year. I usually hold onto clothes for about 3-4 years and the oldest pieces in my wardrobe are 6 years old( I only stopped growing 6 years back at 16 yrs- I am 22 now.) I considered myself to be very conservative in the amount of clothes i own, but 70 seems like a large number- I never thought I owned so many until I started to count!

As I am between two cities with some of my things with me and the rest in a storage box I couldn't say how many items I possess. But I know I have more than I need as I am perfectly fine living with only half of my stuff and I'm not evxactly sure of what I have in the storage box anymore. I did make an agreement with myself when I moved out of my previous home (where I actually donated and sold probably over half of my things) that I would get rid of more things through time and for every item I acquire, at least two would have to go. When you move a lot from one place to another it's more practical to stick to timeless high-quality and robust essentials.

I own about 110+ items. Some of which I have had for years and continue loving, some of which are fast fashion pieces knowing they will never be worn again. Some of my favourite pieces are from Topshop's Reclaim collection as well as Urban Outfitter's Urban Renewal Vintage collection. My most expensive item is a Sherri Hill dress, followed by some pieces from Reiss. The items I wear the most are trousers and bandeau tops. However for work a more formal attire is needed. On average, I add and remove about 20 garments per year.

As a designer (working for mainly "fast-fashion" outdoor companies) and former Anthropologie Associate, I have accumulated hundreds of articles of clothing. The photo below is simply what is hanging in my closet and not my jacket closet, or my dresser. My shoe collection is also not photographed. Since 2005, I have overhauled and reworked my wardrobe by selling to used clothing stores and revamping my closet every year. Most items pictured here have been in my possession for over a decade. These days I still continue my second-hand shopping every few months, buying 2-10 new items following other donated or recycled batches of clothing from my closet. The most expensive item I own retails at about $1,000 which was also bought secondhand. I am currently on my second pregnancy and have only bought two pairs of maternity pants, everything else was bought tailored to my changing figure, but also purchased with the intent of keeping and continuing to wear. I definitely have a long way to go in reducing my clothing purchases.

When I was younger, I used to buy much clothes. I realized that you couldn't buy happiness in the shop. Shopping doesn't resolve your problems. Now I don't have so much free time for shopping, I prefer to do other things and I have more hobbies and activities now. Everytime before buying new clothes I think about money, enviroment impact. Also I try to wear my clothes carefully. Hand washing extends life of clothes. I like pretty things but avoid to buy fast-fashion apparels. But I am a girl and I want to look good. That's why I have various wardrobe.

The pieces I wear the most are definitely my white shirts. I usually buy 3-4 new pieces per year and remove about the same amount. By 'remove' I mean I pass the pieces on to family & friends. In terms of the most expensive piece - that's probably my black wool winter coat which I must have bought around 2004. The piece with the most emotional value is a pair of A&F utility pants which I bought in 1998 at a store near Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. It's slightly worn out but still look good with a white shirt :-)

As a fashion enthusiast I used to buy a LOT of clothes, so over the past 10 years I can't even estimate how many pieces I acquired. I always had the habit to donate clothing I was not using (to charity, or people in need, even to friends who wanted something), so it rotated a lot. Over the past 5 years, I noticed that some of my most "fashionable" items had been worn two to three times, sometimes even one, and so I decided to invest in pieces that I would really use over the years. I continued to donate, sold many items online (on second hand stores) and decided that bfor each purchase I would let go on two pieces from my existing collection. I used to be crazy about shoes, but I let go on most of them and kept those really special in addition to the every-day ones. I would take me hours to count all of my fashion items (I also use my brothers and parents closets since mine doesn't still fit everything), but I plan to reduce it to fit into three large baggages. Wish me luck!

We have extreme weathers so we definitely need a separate wardrobe for our cold Canadian winters, and hot and humid summers (and everything in between). During colder temperatures I tend to wear a lot of jeans with blouses and sweaters and in the summer I tend to wear a lot of dresses.
I noticed that I typically wear the same pieces over and over and can have some pieces I only wear a couple of times. I have severely cut down on my shopping habits and try to buy pieces that I love rather than that need to constantly have new items - I was buying a new item almost every other week. I tend to go through my clothes at the end of each season and give unwanted clothes to my local thrift shop before packing them away.
The most expensive I own is a dress I bought for a wedding that I've only worn once.
What I treasure the most are my sweaters that I've knit using only natural fibres.

So.. this is my maternity / nursing wardrobe.. I have all my maternity clothes out, and all other clothes are packed away. Of the clothes that are out I have about 70 items - around 40 of which I can wear, and which I've bought in the past 3 years. In total I think I have about 200 items of clothing. Every year I find I get rid of about 10 items that I have no attachment to anymore. Before my children and maternity wardrobe I think I would purchase maybe 5 large items in one year. The most expensive item in my wardrobe is an Allanah Hill dress I bought for a wedding. The item which holds the most emotional value for me at the moment is a CUE dress that I bought before I became pregnant with my daughter, and I never got a chance to wear. I think this holds emotional value as it represents a new career path that I took, and a new job opportunity that was presented at the time. I have associated the dress with hope and opportunity I guess.

It is hard to tell which items I wear most. Ever since I was sixteen I considered my wardrobe as a private collection. Getting dressed was always a way to express myself and therefore fashion was just a phenomenon I observed but which was not a guide line for how I got dressed. I buy very little items a year when I find something that will have a real added value to my collection. I do purchase a pair of jeans or an extra T-shirt if it can be combined with what I already have. I must be honest and admit that two of my daughters work for Zara and hand me over items they no longer wish to wear. So at the end of the day I do have fast fashion items that I use. I clear my wardrobe every end of season from items which do not make me happy anymore and hand them over to my friends or to the next door second hand shop.My collection includes items which are 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years old which are combined with more recent goods. I own a big collection of scarves and jewelry (mostly handmade alternative jewels partially made by me.) My most expensive item is a hand felted short cape I just purchased from a local artist. The most emotional and oldest item I own is a Palestinian hand embroidered coat bought for me by my late father. It is 50 years old and still as gorgeous and wearable as when bought back in the 70s.

I have several hundreds of pieces of clothing and accessories ranging from Topshop to Valentino. Most items were bought between 2013-2018. I probably wear 25% of the items since many items are occasion specific and on a daily basis, I end up wearing similar pieces such as jeans and boots, etc.

The most expensive and emotional items in my closet are my designer heels (ranging from $2000-$1200), purses (ranging from $3500-$1500), and jewellery (ranging from $3000-$600). All of the items were given to me as a gift which is why they are emotional. Other than the jewellery and purses which I wear often, I do not often wear the shoes as I only wear them for special occasions.

In the last year and a half, I definitely purchased around 30% of my current wardrobe as my lifestyle changed due to going from being on a student budget to having a reasonable working income. Additionally, due to the need of purchasing work clothes for my job, I added many new items to my wardrobe.

Once a year, I re-organize my closet and give away clothing I do not wear anymore to friends, family, siblings of friends, charity, etc. I find this is the best way to ensure my disposal of clothing does not negatively impact the environment.

Earlier this year I had a Corduroy Jacket made by a guy called Tan at LaneFourtyFive. Made to measure, affordable and organic materials - he has since released a raw organic collection where by the materials aren't dyed what so ever. And also for any pregnant women out there a maternity collection that he alters for FREE once the baby has been born. I support him entirely!

My Cheaney Chelsea boots that I have had for over 18 months and had a double leather sole refurbed on them once! Yet to get two more refurbs!

Acne studio selvaged jeans I bought back in January that are still going strong and only need a couple of washes a year (sounds unhygienic but there are ways of killing bacteria if you look on their website)

Ucon Acrobatics backpack I bought before a trip last year, I use this for uni almost everyday and it's holding up. Loved their packaging note something to the effect of 'we are reducing our carbon emission If you choose to return me you will have to pay for the shipping'

I try not to add to my collection however honestly this year I decided to start investing in pieces that will last many years, I would say I've purchased 3 pairs of shoes. Two pairs of jeans and a jacket this year. I have donated two things to friends that genuinely want them and try to give them a new life.

Being in the industry I tend to buy samples or receive uniform, but the one thing I did treat myself too after a massive month was a pair of Manolos (but even they where in the sale). I wear them every chance I get, cost per wear!

Okay, so the thing I would say has the most emotional value to me are a cheap pair of sandals I picked up in Bali, because whilst we were there a monkey stole one off my foot and started eating it. I got it back but now I have a memory attached to them they won't be thrown away!

I have several hundred pieces (clothing, shoes, accessories) in my wardrobe currently. I find that the items I wear the most are the staples - more basic items that are versatile
and can be worn in combination with different pieces and in different situations. I definitely add more items to my wardrobe than I remove, but ever 1.5 years or so I try to purge my closet and donate my clothes to charity shops in order to make room for newer purchases. I think the most expensive item in my wardrobe and probably the most emotional would be my Burberry scarf. I would classify it as emotional because it was an item that I saved up for every pay check, years ago when I was a bit younger. I remember being so proud of myself that I bought it with my own money (and not my parent's) and it holds sentimental value to me.

I have 46 pieces of clothes for winter, aged between 1 month and two years. I select the clothes I'd like to keep almost once per month, in order to keep just the garnments I wear and love most. I think I buy between 20 and 30 clothes per year, and I am given about the same quantity.
My wardrobe is in constant modification following what I buy and throw.
One of the pieces I hold dear is a shawl. It belonged to my mother and she gave it to me last year. It was my greatest companion for all my travels through Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Austria and Germany for 6 months. I wear it almost everyday. With a pair of grey little boots my father bought me. Yes, I care a lot about what my family offers me :)

My (Almost) Minimalist Wardrobe

I have 107 pieces in my wardrobe. For a long time, I have tried to have the least amount of things as possible. This past year, I started working with my friend selling vintage fashion. Out of all of my items, only about 5% was purchased first-hand. That being said, I made piece with owning more than 30 items (In all honesty, I was starting to get bored). My items suit my diverse lifestyle, and they portray my personality. In 2018 I added 29 items, in 2017 I added 10 items, and in 2016 I added 3 items. Each time I add an item to my wardrobe, I try to get rid of one or two things. The items that I wear the most often are basics like dark denim jeans and my most comfortable, yet wearable shirts. The most expensive items in my wardrobe are a Filson jacket that my dad bought me for $200, my doc martens boots which were around $100, and a nice wild fang shirt for $50. Other than that, I get pieces for very very cheap using my thrifty knowledge. My most valuable pieces are a shirt I thrifted in Poland, a shirt from Hawaii that my mom bought in the early 90’s, and a velvet shirt with gold zipper shoulder pads I bought from a vintage store in France. These items mean so much to me because they each have a story and remind me of experiences, values, and loved ones.

I took photos of all 4 of my closets but it seems I can only share one here. I am likely in the low thousands with articles of clothing. I do know I've downsized to about 100 pairs of shoes, 60 of which have their own shelving unit in my bedroom.

I can identify which items I wear the most - 4 pars of jeans, and probably 5 sweaters, 5 jackets, 10-15 dress shirts. I'm sure exactly how many items per year I add now. Far less than I used to.

I've worked in retail stores my while life so I have dresses from the 90's when I worked at Betsey Johnson. And tons of samples from Nordstrom private label because I worked there 8 years and had access to all the sample sales.

The most expensive items are probably my Chanel and Louboutin heels, around $1000/pair. My wedding dress was only $600! Shoes are clearly more important to me. (I once owned 300 pairs at once but then had to move across the country and downsized.)

Those same Chanel red suede platform block heel sandals I wore at my wedding and those have the most emotional value to me. My friend and I searched all day in NYC for the perfect wedding shoe. I bought them at Barney's. I never thought I'd be able to afford to shop there.

I have been very conscious of my clothing consumption over the last few years even though i have worked in the apparel industry for nearly 15 years. At rough count I have ~120 pieces of regular clothing (pants, shirts, sweaters, shorts etc.). 30 of which are button up shirts because... that's just what I wear. I have a very simple, standard wardrobe that is fashionable enough to look presentable but functional and versatile. Other than my beloved Uniqlo Supima Tshirts I have stopped buying fast fashion entirely and really try to focus on buying high-quality wardrobe staples and only when I need them.

I also own A LOT of specialized sporting apparel like probably 40 - 50 pieces of cycling gear, Ski gear, camping gear etc.
I have roughly 25 pairs of shoes and tend to wear my shoes for a very long time. For leather shoes, I generally buy good quality, expensive shoes that can be resoled & fixed. I have had my tan Grenson Brogues for 7 years and have spent equally as much money maintaining them as I did when I purchased them.

My most expensive item is a custom suit that I bought from a local tailor for $2000

I typically add 4 - 6 pieces per year and have become both ruthless and efficient at purging my closet and trying to ensure that good value product goes to those in need.

My favourite are a silk dress I got for $5 on a sale rack in a vintage store and a handmade silk kimono from the same store. My most expensive items I purchased are both from one of the few designers that manufacture their clothing in New Zealand. I have a bomber jacket from a very famous New Zealand designer which is probably worth as much as the rest of wardrobe but it was a gift and I'm refusing to wear it since discovering this designer has been deliberately misleading the consumer about their supply chain

The coat cost 100€ however it’s quality is supreme, it’s amazing and I wear I often when the weather is cool.(unfortunately in HK is mostly hot and humid so I don’t have a lot of chance to wear it....)

Hanging pcs are about 80, also collected over the years and some very old pieces from my grandmother still. Garments like that tell me stories about the past so I keep them even if I don’t wear them. Then I have a big drawer with about 20 jeans, pants and shorts collected and kept over the years. I think I wear about 40% of my wardrobe occasionally and 10% all the time. I do have a hard time throwing out things because of emotional value mostly. I admit that I sometimes buy a piece of clothing that I barely wear and usually these end up at the consignment store or I pass these on to friends or family.

I knew this outcome, but there it is; the t-shirts take the cake. I counted 315 pieces of clothing in total, from which 77 t-shirts. What can I say, I love the prints, and if I go to a good concert, I might buy a tour memory.
I don't buy new clothes a lot these days, few times a year and get the most items from flea markets, or make them myself. I've studied production chains for so long, that it holds me back to purchase just anywhere, and I'm planning to start my own brand so I make, mend and alter my clothes whenever necessary. Jeans I tend to wear totally out and use the fabric to mend other pairs.
The most expensive piece is a dress or a biker coat, both under 300 eur. A couple of pairs of shoes have cost over 500 eur. The most emotionally valuable piece is a grey GulBla hoodie, bought in my teens in early 90's, and I still happily wear it. Amazingly only the jersey in the cuffs has some tiny holes because the fabric has worn out, but otherwise in a quite decent shape.
I don't think I need 315 pieces of clothing and there certainly are some just waiting to be altered. But there is definitely a call for some streamlining on the whole.
-Kirsi Hannele Hyvarinen

My wardrobe - key items
As a consumer I do not buy a lot of clothes, and working in the fashion industry this is tricky as there is pressure to follow trends etc. I am incorporating more sustainable brands into my life and am trying to buy from these only IF I need to buy new clothes as I am keeping my consumption to a minimum.
Key items from front to back;
-Tommy Hilfiger Jumper, £80, 2018, I take very good care of this and wear it a lot, when buying it I considered its 'price per wear' and is one of my most values pieces in my wardrobe.
-lace top, H&M, £14, 2014, I have had this top for a fair few years now can see no point in throwing it out because 'I wore it too many times', this is my philosophy for lots of my clothes. I never tend to have massive clear outs and try to generate new ways to wear my clothes!
-black top, this was given to me by a friend who no longer wanted it, where possible I always send friends photos of clothes I may not want and if I need something to wear for an event etc. i will ask to borrow clothes first before buying.

My Wardrobe Analysis
Currently not at home to take a photo, but would like to continue on with the course at hand.

I recall before starting my personal sustainability journey that I would purchase maybe 1-5 items per week--just clothes. Then I slowly realized the human impact of my purchases and drastically reduced the items I would purchase.

I am currently living in Sri Lanka and unfortunately the water and/or detergent I can access is not the best for washing clothing and so my clothes have slowly started to tear and gain wholes wherever possible. Items I've had for 10+ years are no more (or have become cleaning cloths).

In the last 2 years I have lived here I have purchased a total of roughly 10 new clothing items (including shoes). I think twice about my purchases and whether or not they will last 10+ years or whether or not the company has sustainability practices in place (although this is hard to find sometimes).

For the clothes I no longer wear, I try to donate or repurpose them in some way.

I've changed my purchasing behavior and hope that in some way it makes a difference in the end.

I have relocated to London for 2 years, in which I needed to restrict how much of my clothes, shoes and accessories I could bring. I have realised that I have many clothes and accessories back home that I rarely wear. Knowing I have to move back, I have been more thoughtful and aware of what I add to my wardrobe. And I am finding this a great practice for purchasing more ethically and sustainable.

I mainly wear a black tee shirt with boot cut jeans, tailored jacket and puma trainers.
My most expensive item are G-Star jeans £120 but I have had them for 5 years. Most of my jeans are over 1 year old. I have culled my wardrobe over a year ago and do not buy items unless absolutely necessary.
I have 97 pieces of clothing. I bought 8 items this year. I am struggling to find good quality tee shirts that last so always end up in Hand M ...... The only thing I have that is of emotional value is my Acne Kanken back pack because I love it.

I have over 100 items of clothing and this is just my Winter Wardrobe, which consists of mainly work wear and going out clothes. Since I am moving a lot I keep a small wardrobe. I buy as much as I sell every year. My most expansive piece of clothing is a 200 Euro silk dress by JNBY that I bought in China.
My most precious piece of clothing is by Cavlo Colucci. A pullover that I found it in my fathers wardrobe three years ago. Everyday I wear my Italian wool coat. I received it from my mum. She bought it in the 90s. Besides that I love to wear my dark blue glitter socks, my turtlenecks and my jeans.

Such an interesting task to carry out. Been wanting to declutter my stuff for years - like after I had the kids, but still never managed it. I only keep the kids clothes small and efficient and sell or buy 2nd hand clothes. My wardrobes are full from 'before' kids and 'after' kids and is over 300 pcs at least. Now I very rarely buy much, normally a few times a year and in the sales. I always take clothes back to H&M for recycling if really worn, or take to refuge/red cross areas to share clothing. A lot of my clothes come from work as I work at a sports brand and so it's hard not to wear the latest pieces to represent the company - but I guess that's exactly the issue - do we need all this?!...

I have approximately 85 pieces of clothing in my wardrobe, most of which are tshirts and jumpers. I am trying to buy more as I want to express myself more through clothing, my most recent purchase being a bright purple puffa jacket.

My oldest piece is probably a knitted jumper I purchased maybe 4 years ago from Next.
The items I wear most are my sixth form clothes but aside from that probably striped leggings and sweaters which I style with air force 1's.
Every year, I add around 10 items and remove around 5, but I am hoping to buy more over the next year as I earn money from my job.
The most expensive are my air force 1's which were £85.
The item holding most value is probably the knitted jumper that I have has the longest as I remember buying it with my birthday money from my Granny and was so excited!

I have about 100 items in my wardrobe.
Including all seasons, sports and shoes.
The item I have had the longest and wear the most is my black leather jacket which I bought in a vintage shop in Paris for 150€ in 2012. It is probably also my most expensive item. This jacket hold a high emotinal value to me as I bought it as a gift to myself after going through some tough times. Additionlly, I have traveled the world with this jacket and we share a lot of good memories.

I buy a lot of second-hand clothes, probably 15-20 new items per year. However, during the past years, I have probably bought new 7-10 items in addition to that. Throughout the year, I go through my closet and clean out everything that I don't wear, about 30 items per year.

In general, I am trying hard to not build a too strong relationship with my clothes and things. Primarily of the above reason, that I only want to keep the things that I use and want.

I have a few wardrob

I have a few wardrobes: 1 for sport, one for seasonal change, one for accessories, a five-shelve shoe closet and my basic t-shirts and tops drawer.

I am sharing here a photo of the main autumn wardrobe here.
I believe I own about 300-350 pieces alltogher . + lingerie and accessories

30 pair of shoes
16 handbags
More jackets than I can wear
Scarves
Gloves
Hats

I have identified the garments I wear the most In winter (I switch wardrobe in spring summer):
3 jeans
2 jackets
4 pair of shoes (2 omfortable & 1 heels )
1 pair of boots
4 bags
3 jumpers
2 turtle neck basic long sleeved shirts
1 skirt
2 cardigan
2 blazers
7 t-shirt
5 spaghetti tops

I could easily and happily live with a capsule wardrobe. By adding different accessories and changing my hairstyle, I look different even when I wear the same favourites. The trick is: Accessorize.

I now buy very little compared to a year ago (before learning about the sustainability issue. I now buy hardly anything, if I do I look for quality.

T-shirt mania

As a sweater designer I tend to hang on to knits I find have an interesting stitch or detail, so I have about 60 or so sweaters collected over 20+ years.

Too many forgo
I’d like to say that I live in Hong Kong for now and there is always a problem with room for keeping something, so I won’t say my buying habits has changed, however I won’t be able to provide exact number of pieces bought each year because I do clean my wardrobe, however I also keep a lot I don’t wear but don’t feel like giving away.
I’ve counted 53 pieces without things kept far away and without shoes/bags
I think the most expensive item is a winter coat, then, shoes/boots etc.
Concerning the items I wear the most depends on season and currently I’m pregnant so wasnt wear a lot of my usual clothes for almost a year!
The most emotional item is a simple Zara trench coat, I bought it about 5 years ago infrance when was traveling with my family around Provance, Cot d’azur, and Spain it was my first time to Europe and when I fall in love with it! The coat cost 100€ however it’s quality is supreme, it’s amazing and I wear I often when the weather is cool.(unfortunately in HK is mostly hot and humid so I don’t have a lot of chance to wear it....)

I have around 200 (it's to many and I'm not in love with most of them) items.

Trying to keep things simple

But I've worked in retail my whole life!

Capsule collection

Karly Bloom - My Wardrobe

I have several hundreds of pieces of clothing and accessories ranging from H&M to vintage Chanel, most of them bought from 2006-2016. I'd say I probably wear 20% of them since I always end up in the same jeans, t-shirts and sweaters.
My lifestyle has evolved when becoming a mother and leaving the fashion industry: no more budget for myself, no more sample sales, a need to consider "useful practical clothing". For the past 3 years, I don't think I have bought more than 10 pieces per year. It's a real job to open the wardrobe and look at it with new eyes when I feel the urge to go shopping.
Most expensive and emotional definitely is my jewellery but I wear it everyday.

I have decided to post just one item from my wardrobe. A wool ribbed blouse I wear since 1993!!! Yes I know, how crazy is that?! I purchased this item from Kookai. Such wonderful texture that has been washed over and over again and never lost its smoothness and fit.
I am not at all proud to admit that my wardrobe nowadays is consisted by lots and lots of items that don’t last for two seasons in a row. Fast fashion has made me keen on over consuming and discarding...I intend to change all of that.
I am planning for this springclean to Mary Kondo/ my wardrobe and keep only few items as the above; items to cherish, items to keep me company as the years go by..
New things will be always welcome but only after consideration and by brands that are built around sustainability culture and beyond!

My maternity wardrobe
So.. this is my maternity / nursing wardrobe..

My Lightweight Wardrobe
Considering that most of the clothing I wear regularly are in drawers and the only garments that are hanging in my closet are a couple of pieces of outerwear and granny sweaters. So taking a picture of my closet seems a bit pointless, but I have about 50 items overall (not including intimates).

The items I wear the most are the pants and shirts I wear for work. I work at what is essentially an English training center and we have a uniform or the polo that’s given to us by the company and khaki pants. So I rotate through those pieces on a weekly basis.

Since I’ve been moving around a lot over the past couple of years I e only added items when it’s needed, and given away or donated items that i haven’t worn in a long time before I left home almost 4 years ago. That being said I can really give an estimate as to how many items I add and remove throughout the year.

The most expensive garment in my wardrobe is probably a jacket from Banana Republic it was originally priced at $175 (I believe), but at the time I had a family member who worked for the company in one of their retail stores so I was able to get the jacket at a discount.

I don’t currently have any garments that I have an emotional attachment to with me, but in a small box at home I have a shirt that belonged to my dad that I love to wear.

I recently moved in Milan, so not all my wardrobe is with me.

Here I have a hundred clothes, all of them bought in the last 3 years.

I try to use all the clothes in the same way but what I think I use more is a red trousers.

I don't add many items every year, I try to make purchases with a long-term sense.

My most expensive item is a dress from MM6 - Margela bought at a sell-off.

On an emotional level I am bound in a way to my clothes when I graduated, a blue skirt and a yellow sweater, and the dress for the discussion of the master.

My wardrobe changes between winter and summer.

This is my wardrobe; i tend to vary my clothes depending on weather and seasons, but shorts, t-shirts and wide leg trousers made of linen, lyocell, viscose and cotton are the items that i wear the most. Now i try to buy less than i used to be, i buy like 5 o 7 items by year, and the same amount of clothes to remove from my closet. The most expensive item that i have is a pair of “luxury” high heels that used to be my mother’s shoes. And a leather coat, and a wool coat are my especial and emotionally value items because used to be my grandmother’s coats

Many things that I have, I bought in the vintage stores around the world, London,Paris,Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York etc..
I know that I have more that I need, for that reason to remove some items, I usually give like gifts to my friends or donate my "old" clothes or sometimes sold them.
My most expensive item is a pair of shoes.. I really like shoes , new and also vintage shoes.

My one little weakness - The White Shirt
The pieces I wear the most are definitely my white shirts. I usually buy 3-4 new pieces per year and remove about the same amount. By 'remove' I mean I pass the pieces on to family & friends. In terms of the most expensive piece - that's probably my black wool winter coat which I must have bought around 2004. The piece with the most emotional value is a pair of A&F utility pants which I bought in 1998 at a store near Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. It's slightly worn out but still look good with a white shirt :-)

Also I try to wear my clothes carefully. Hand washing extends life of clothes. I like pretty things but avoid to buy fast-fashion apparels. But I am a girl and I want to look good. 300+ items - when counting and reviewing its a wake up call!
Working in the industry I acquired clothes luckily through work. I am very sentimental about pieces in my wardrobe and tend to keep items not to wear just because of emotional value.
The last two years i have bought 5 items due to financial changes and now with the education on this course i will be very conscious of what i buy going forward, even reworking my wardrobe rater than buying.
My most treasured item is vintage kimono that i wear in the summer, i love the heritage it holds and the durability as it timeless.

Former "Emotional Apparel Consumer"

I am currently not living at home s I have most of my clothes at my house, however, I still have so many clothes here in my other flat that I feel a bit ashamed to be honest, but to be fair, I stopped overbuying 2 years go and I still have clothes from when I was 12 or younger and I am 18 now. I am definitely not buying much these days and I could not be happier about it. I know every piece that I have here in my apartment and I try to wear them all. I think moving away from home is such a nice way to really think about what you need to bring to uni and be conscious about every piece.

I don't buy clothes so often to be honest, 1 item (maximum) every 3 months but my main problem is my Job... I'm not a sneakerhead but as a Footwear Designer I have around 100 pairs of shoes at home that I even don't wear, most of them are samples, some are still in the box, I realised that I was wearing always the same shoes, 3 from the brands that I work for and 1 that I bought 2 years ago.

My wardrobe
I live in a tiny apartment, so my clothes are split among a few spaces: what is in season stays in this wardrobe and one chest of drawers; what is out of season stays in a few boxes, next to the wardrobe. The coats, scarfs and hats for the season also stay out on doors' hooks. Jewelry goes in a smaller box in one drawer. Shoes are in the racks inside the wardrobe, but sandals are stored in a box.

The items I wear the most are: the green jumper on the top shelf, my two pair of jeans (one blue, one black), a few t-shirts and one jacket and scarf.

I estimate that per year I add approx. 5 items and I remove approx. the same.

The most expensive item in my wardrobe is my jewelry, for sure.

The items with the most emotional value are those I wore on my wedding date.

I don't have many items in my wardrobe, in the last 15 years I worked in 3 different continents. I like to be light when I move, so I have a minimalist fashion approach. I try to buy few quality items and when I cannot use them anymore I look for a way to recycle them.

I have around 100 pieces in my wardrobe. And I have 15 pair of shoes. The most expensive item that I bought was probably a dress for a wedding from a designer. I buy one thing a month which is most of the times second hand. My most valuable items are my Chanel bags.

Well it's not normal but right now I have 20 things in my wardrobe.

Way too many clothes
unfortunately, I was one consumer enjoying fast-fashion a bit too much in the past, as I loved shopping.

Too much
I was participating in the 'fast fashion' trend for a long time, so I have a lot of clothes. I have a few favorite items and those items are also the best quality items I have. Since a few months, I see clothes as an investment, I don't buy a lot and if I buy something I do this conscious.

Lately I have been making my own clothes.

I have over 250 pieces in my wardrobe, some hanging but a lot folded. I have a leather jacket I bought for £650 the most expensive thing i have in my wardrobe. I have a lot of leather jackets my favourite item of clothing, but because they are heavy items i have them in my cupboard in the hall. I have more fashion items than I need. I'm a shopaholic!

I have around 65 pieces in my wardrobe (excluding shoes and accessories).

Rather than buying cheaper, short term items from the likes of H&M (although I admit I still buy the occasional item), I have tried to invest my money into simple pieces that will withstand trends/fads. I am more considered in my approach to clothes purchases, especially with my awareness of the environmental and social impacts I, as an individual, am making. I try to think of the following - ‘is this worth it?’; ‘how much wear will I get out of this?’; ‘Will I still be wearing this in 6 months time?’.

Other than leggings, underwear and vest tops, jeans and jumpers are what I invest in.

The most items in my drawers are jumpers and knitted tops. I was a knitwear technologist at my previous job and part of my job was to review and develop the quality of the products we were selling.

The most expensive items are my oversized cashmere jumpers and all over sequinned merino/silk lined cardigans. These are investment pieces and have been wearing them since 2013. I was directly involved in improving the handle and longevity of the garments and therefore have more of an attachment to these pieces.

A Different Perspective: My Jewelry

I decided to photograph something I have a harder time not buying: jewelry. This is only about 1/3 of the jewelry I own. Pictured is about 85 pieces. Surveying all of these pieces, there are probably about 10 there are my "go-to" earrings and necklaces. The others I only wear occasionally. What is interesting to me is there are a few pieces from years ago that I remember buying and thinking were expensive, and now my standards for what is expensive have changed, so they seem so inexpensive in comparison to my newer pieces.

(not including shoes or underwear), about 10 are only pieces which I never wear but are 'just incase' items. The amount of clothing i bought this year was 26 less than last year (not including anything I bought last year and have since thrown out) this decrease in buying was because it was at the beginning of this year that I became aware of the idea of fast fashion and sustainability, and thus was trying to make more conscious choices - and although I wasn't entirely successful clearly my approach is slightly different. My most cherished items and most frequent are probably jumpers which I have a lot of because living in the UK it gets cold and I like to stay cosy. I had a surprising amount of going out/party wear which I've noticed don't get as much wear as items such as coats (which I also have a lot of), jumpers, or jeans.

I bought 21 items since the beginning of the year but didn't buy anything since my new pair of veja trainers two months ago which match when I decided to change my consumption habits. My most expensive items are coats (around 800 pounds) from the designer brand that I work for. I think my most valuable item is a denim
jacket that I bougth at a vintage shop when I was 18 and I still wear it today.

My favourite pieces are good quality and timeless garments. My basic and current favourite outfit is t-shirt + jeans + blazer.
My most expensive item is my shearling winter jacket fro McQ , which I found from a online outlet 2 years ago.
This faux fur coat in the picture is also one of my favourites. I bought it from a good friend of mine for 5 euros 3 years ago, and she had bought it from secondhand store. So this coat has a long history already, and I always think about my friend when I wear it (cheesy right ). I had to fix it a bit though and take it to the dry cleaners.

Excessive Fashion Designer with a desire to be minimalist.

This was a terrifying activity. I recently attempted to make my wardrobe more "minimal" and I managed to get 4 shopping bags of clothes and shoes to give away. I have about 300 items and this is just an estimate with what I can see and what I know is in my suitcase in the attic that holds my summer clothes that I'm not wearing right now. I genuinely would love to have a minimal wardrobe but it will be a fight against my nature. Being a fashion designer there are a lot of samples from my collections that I have kept for sentimental reasons or for work.

About 20 items are from the last 2 years and I have items in my wardrobe that are 10 or more years old. The items I wear the most are my jeans, leggings and sweaters. I buy about 10 to 12 items a year and remove about the same. The most expensive item in my wardrobe is my All Saints leather jacket which I bought on discount for €250 and that doesn't include my Vera Wang wedding dress which I bought for €550 which also holds the most emotional value. With this said, I think I will sell it soon.

Shockingly during this investigation I found out that in my wardrobe i hoard about 85 pieces of clothing - excluding my copious amounts of lounge-wear and my shoes. More troubling was the fact that I actually found two jumpers in the depths of my wardrobe floors which I had forgotten about, despite being in fine condition and in my opinion, quite cute. My problem in styling is finding clothes which pair well together due to my love for colourful and patterned garments which could be described as kitsch or garish.
I'd say that some odf my most worn items are basics, such as my asos black skater skirt, and my black coat, or more surprisingly worn items such as my blue velvet flares or yellow chenille cardigan. Most of my items have been added within the last three years, mainly due to my style evolving as a young person (I'm 17) and body shape differences. I'd day that the most expensive item is probably my coat, at £65, or my prom dress at £68 and otherwise a £50 jack wills jacket. Otherwise, my budget is relatively limited and vintage shopping is a great way of finding unique bargains for me. I'd say my vintage floral jacket is the most sentimental to me, as I bought it on a fantastic holiday this year and is an identifiable signature of my style.

I tend to keep designers' clothes but not fast fashion items. I have one nephew and one nice. They both are teenagers and they like to take some pieces expecially streetwear. the most expencive item I own is a coat by a french designer I bought this summer together with a pair of shoes. In my wardrobe there are a lot of pieces that I like to keep also because they can tell me a story of my life like the first coat I bought or the suite I wear at a friends wedding. My most important item would be my wedding dress - although my most expensive would be several dresses bought for recent weddings I attended. My favorite item is a pair of jeans and a newer top I found at a department store with Andy Warhol on it (first top i've bought in a year or more). I wear my work uniform every day - so I have a stack of work clothes but I try to keep it separate from my regular wardrobe. I live in an area that has dramatic weather changes so it is hard for me to keep my wardrobe on the smaller end.

There is a complete mixture of high street and designer.

As I consider myself a shopaolic, it is impossible for me to note every item in my closet, but I'll try to be more precise as I can.

I started to buy a relevant number of clothes when I was in high school: we can say I bought like 200 items (or more - ops- ) during five years: i was changing, I changed many styles, I was looking for my very personal one, so I guess each one of you will understand! Of course I did not spend a lot on every item and in the meanwhile I also borrowed (and I still do) my mother's clothes!

[timeline]

The item that I definitely wear the most is my favourite pair of jeans (2015). Then it comes my black jacket (2013), my (fake!) leather jacket (2014).

I add 10-15 items per year, more or less, as well as the items I remove.

The most expensive item in my wardrobe is a branded black suit I used for my graduation this year.

As to the emotional value of my items, I have to say I don't give any. The only items I would never give away are the ones i used to wear when I was a child, or the gifts from my parents/boyfriend.

As you will see form the picture, I decided to publish just one part of my wardrobe, containing my favourites! Since it’s winter now, you’ll see mainly jumpers, sweaters, coats. We have:

3 jumpers bought in 2014

3 in 2015

4 in 2016

2 coats and 2 blouses from last year

1 dress from 2016

2 dress and 1 jumper from this year

More or less!

But as I said, that’s just part of my wardrobe; actually I bought much more items! But I can say that, with passing time, I reflect more and buy clothesthings only if necessary (or they fit me so well.. :) )

I've been working on curating my wardrobe over the past few years. This became especially easy after I quit fast fashion. I no longer got caught in sale traps. I'm at about 50 all in at the moment. I collect pieces (mostly vintage) from all my travels, so each piece has a story. This was my aspiration, and a great one, but I'm also realizing sometimes you just need a black turtleneck or a comfy pair of jeans to butt into. So, I'm going to add 3 more basic bits to my wardrobe this winter (probably from second-hand/thrifted sources, but originally fast fashion—gotta get that 20% turnover thrift rate up). My most expensive item: second hand Tabi pumps. No regrets since I'm trying to buy better, buy less.

I have 150 pieces. 3 years ago I changed my consumption, I spent 1 year without buying a piece of cloth, after that most of my wardrobe turned to second hand clothes, some I bought some I received. I the past two years I bought new clothes from local brands, this year were 4 pieces, and it was true love. The shirt I most like is the oldest one, and still I have some clothes that I dont use but it is hard to let go.

In my winter wardrobe I counted 85 pieces of clothing, this doesn’t include my coats, shoes or bags. I love to buy coats as I believe they are an essential to any wardrobe and by having a statement coat it can transform any outfit. This is the reason why I have quite a lot of coats however each of them is well loved and has stories behind them from when I’ve worn them in the past. The items that I wear the most are the basic pieces such as my black suede skirt and some jumpers that are neutral colours as they can be dressed up or down easily if the right shoes, coat and bag are added!

The amount of items that I add to my wardrobe each year can vary. This is because sometimes I feel like brands produce similar pieces each year so I don’t have a need to buy anything as I already own something similar, yet if there are some stand out pieces that a brand has released or I need to replace some basic items then I’ll buy more. However, I think it’s fun to go shopping and buy whatever you like as some retail therapy is always necessary!

The amount of items that I get rid of from my wardrobe depends on whether my style has changed, although now I feel like I have found the style I like so I don’t get rid of as many clothes as I used to when I was younger.

The most expensive item in my wardrobe is a Coach bag that I recently received for my birthday that was £500 and is made of real leather. It has become one of my favourite accessories to use as I find it is just the right size for everyday use.

One of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe is a small blue bag from Michael Kors. This bag has been many places with me, such as Germany and Poland and has been through blizzards and rain yet still looks almost exactly the same as when I bought it. I love this bag because it reminds me of some of the countries I’ve travelled to and the memories that were made there.

I counted ~ 200 pieces excluding underwear, shoes and accessories, including sportswear and outerwear. This year I have bought 14 new pieces, got 3 and done 6. 14 new pieces bought this year sounds a lot, more than I expected, but I know or hope that all those items I'm going to use for long, hopefully decades, part of them bought second hand. Oldest pieces in my wardrobe are a decade old, still in a good shape and in use. I'm trying to build my wardrobe as timeless as possible and avoid buying unnecessary clothes. There are also clothes I haven't used in a long time that I would like to put forward, give to a friend or sell second hand since they are all in good shape. But then there are also treasures that I don't use that often but that are special to me, for example clothes I have made myself, really old ones or ones with a story.

Lots of flannel. I have a teal tee shirt with a ukulele on the back which I wear quite a lot. My most expensive item (not my shoes) is probably my vest by Habitat (about $92). The item I am most sentimental about is most likely a grey tee shirt with Louis Louis on it, something a good friend (who likes in a different state) gave me for my birthday since I think of him every time I wear it. I try to get rid of more pieces than I get each year but I am not quite sure how many I get and remove. I tend to shift clothes out of my wardrobe for a while then go throw the storage and donate a ton at a time.

I have already crossed the border of the 50´s so I confess I have too many clothes, mainly because I would like to sell them or give to someone, but it is not that easy, mainly because I respect their value and I also have affective memories.

I'm currently moving house and leaving for holidays, that way I'm with almost everything I have in bags and boxes, and only the essentials for three days. But since I moved to London I noticed that I did more shopping than when I lived in Sao Paulo ... but I believe I am a conscious consumer, because 80% of the time I buy something just when I need it. Most of my clothes are worn to the 'end of their lives'. I believe in the search for quality and not quantity, the idea of buying something and having it for a long time, I even have clothes that were from my mother ... What I do not use, I give to friends or people that I know they need. I try to use everything I have in my wardrobe, and if I don't use it in three months (except for winter clothes or party garments) and find a new place for it.

Can't say precisely how much items I have bought during last year, but I think that lately I have bought something smaller or bigger each month. I have to admit that I am more conscious with my babies wardrobe and carefully select everything I buy and think beforehand will this item will go well together with all other items in his wardrobe. When put in writing I don't like at all my purchasing behavior. The positive side is that I recycle all items I don't need anymore or give to family/friends.

Reading the other posts, made me feel bad for the number of items in my closet...There are more than 300 and it is only a portion of it (because i have moved to france and couldnt bring everything). In my favor, i can say that i have bought almost every thing in second hand stores. I have started with this habit 8 years ago, but certainly i bought a lot over the past 3 years. I can not resist a perfect silk blouse/shirt. I think i can remove at least 50 items. The most expensive item is a brand new wool coat. The items that hold the most emotional value are the ones of brands like Valentino, Armani, Oscar de la Renta. Not because of the monetary value. I appreciate, not only the material, design and confection but also the fact that they were like hidden treasures that no one saw in those stores.

I am really good, however about spring cleaning and donating a bunch of clothes each year to those in need. I love to thrift as well. I love the dresses the most and wear them pretty frequently.
I own 300+ pieces of clothing (not including accessories and shoes). One of the bigger collections compared to my classmates’ posts that I’ve read! I’ve built up this collection over 15 years, and I tend to hold onto items as design inspiration (I’m a fashion designer), even though I know I will never wear a lot of them. I probably wear 25% of my wardrobe. I rarely buy from fast fashion brands, and try to purchase only investment pieces that are good quality and made from natural fabrics, spending up to $200 for certain items. When I was very busy at work, I would buy alot, making hasty purchases, probably 5 items a month. When working at a fashion company there is pressure to always dress “on trend”. However, now that I’m working less, and have more time to consider my purchases, I barely purchase 1 item per month - instead I’ve starting going into my archive and bringing my old pieces back to life. I’m envious of those who only have 100 pieces or less, however I feel my creativity would be stifled if I had such a basic wardrobe.

I own 400+ pieces, not including shoes and accessories. Obviously, bags and outerwear are the most used ones, shoes as well. I can say the same about sportswear and homeward, I can use these items over and over again, and I exchange them only when they are out of use. My shopaholics period is over, so I hardly ever add more than 20 items per year. I remove a bit less, so my wardrobe is about to explode :) The most expensive item, if I don't count jewellery and watches is my Dries Van Noten coat. It was like 2000 euros a few years ago. Nevertheless, the majority of clothes I possess are 5 years old or more. I love changing the looks, but my tastes haven't changed that much, so I hardly ever throw out clothes, only give them away as gifts. I buy many vintage clothing, especially when it comes to leather. Anyway, I know I could have done better. I don't attach emotionally to clothes that much, so let's say some jewellery which were gifts are the most dear to me.

After having had a look at my wardrobe, I would say I own more or less 200 garments (counting everything from tops to bottom pieces, including pajamas, dresses, skirts etc...). It would also be interesting to count accessories as women are usually more passionate about accessories rather than clothing. Indeed, I'm a proof: I have more or less 30 handbags, and more or less the same amount of shoes.

The items I mostly wear are pairs of Jeans, shirts for working, and coats. They are part of my everyday working life. I also wear very much athletic gear, as I practice sport 3/4 times a week.

I noticed that since 3 years I totally stopped buying clothes and started giving the ones I don't use anymore to associations. Most expensive items include designer bags, jackets and some shoes.

I definitely give more attention to items that are associated to a certain moment of my life, like gifts from my parents or from friends. I also value more the expensive clothing I had the possibility to acquire after having saved some money for a certain time.

My wardrobe has had a bit of a reckoning this year. Me and my little family have been living between several countries with the majority of our belongings packed away in Singapore.

So, in use, I have literally had about fifteen items of clothing (not inc. underwear, accessories or shoes) on constant rotation, and this has had to suit various climates – from freezing cold London, to humid tropical Singaporean heat, I’ve managed to make it work and have realised that after almost a year without everything else that clogs up the closet, I barely remember what else I own, much less actually miss it.

I guess it’s the whole concept of a capsule wardrobe; selecting a few items that can all be mixed and alternated to have maximum versatility.

I basically live in jeans and neutral linen, cotton and silk shirts. I do some days get the feeling I’ve been wearing the same thing for the last ten months and get that impulse to “buy something fresh” but more often, I get a little wave of satisfaction in knowing I can pack everything up in half an hour and be ready to move to the next place.
I’ve only bought two items of clothing this year (one a blouse, and one a pair of Birkenstocks) which is a huge reduction on previous years, where I was office-bound and living in the one city (you’d think I’d need less in that lifestyle, doing the same thing every day?)

The most expensive items I own are a pair of Burberry boots and a Burberry handbag, which I bought second-hand a few years ago and are currently packed away with our furniture and belongings in SG. It’s telling that these are really the only two items I can say I’ve missed since we’ve been away. I considered these items long before I purchased them, I saved for them, wore them relentlessly and have always imagined being able to pass them on to my daughter, which, now that I’ve had a daughter I look forward to doing.

In terms of emotional value, after this year I can honestly say I have little to no attachment to any of the other garments I have stowed away, and it is only the jewellery I wear every day – all pieces handed down from different relatives which I hold dear.

The running theme here I think, is that I should be aiming to purchase things I like enough to hold onto forever rather than giving into impulse purchases and the perceived need of dressing last minute or in something new for an event or similar.
I think by now we all know this in theory, but it can be much harder to adhere to in a more fast-paced, competitive lifestyle. I can only hope that our experiences this year will imprint on my consumer habits permanently.

I counted that I have more than 160 pieces in my wardrobe, and that´s too much. What I wear most: in the winter woollen jumpers and skirts with Basque barret, in summertime three favourite dresses. The use depends if I´m going to work or freetime. The most expensive: Amanda Wakeley skirt from Intermon Oxfam, London. I have removed about 20 clothes last year to second hand and bought about 25 mostly from flee markets. Most emotionally item is woollen sweater that my grandmother made to my dad in 60´s, they both have passed away. I try to buy used clothes, materials like silk, linnen, wool, cotton. This year I would like to have more minimal wardrobe and buy less even from flee markets. My bags are made by me and some clothes also. I should make more clothes for me.

After looking more closely I realized that I’ve acquired about 35 new clothing items this year, excluding shoes, jewelry, and accessories. Most of these new items have been free from work, collaborations, ect. The other pieces I’ve purchased are vintage, I’m very conscious of avoiding fast fashion. I have a collection of beautiful Wolford basics I collected from years of working there that are the among the most expensive items I have. Thy have lasted me the longest, some of them 5 years wearing them very often every winter. The most expensive clothing item I own is a Fenty coat I got on sale for $350 and unfortunately have retired it from my daily rotation after only a year of use, the effect of a short lived trend.

Clothing I’ve made has the most emotional value and it’s impossible to get rid of any article of clothing I’ve created over the last 10 years (I still have a closet full of really badly made garments I made as a teenager). One of the most recent pieces I’ve made, a pair of neoprene mesh pants with metal detailing is the most emotionally valuable piece I own. I made them to wear to my partners performance at Coachella last year and have worn them to other important occasions since. They bring me so much joy and I feel so chic in them.

It is embarrassing to admit when looking at sustainable fashion that this does not even make up half my clothes - most of them are kept at my parent's house.
I wear jeans and culottes regularly but cannot say that I wear any tops ‘the most,’ as a rotate through liking specific styles more so regularly. Per year I probably add at least ten items and would honestly only remove about one or two, and that is only if they were worn or did not fit any more (I take them to charity shops or give them to my sister if they don’t fit.) The most expensive items in my wardrobes are some of my shoes, some dresses and my fur and leather jackets, as well as some jewellery. Items that hold emotional value to me are pieces of clothing I got from my mom, because I can remember her wearing them and she means a lot to me.

I often wear a long black 100% linen skirt because it goes with everything, looks classy and comfortable to wear. I rotate between approx 3 cotton dresses during summer with flats, again to be comfortable and look nice at the same time. I often wear pants, jeans and shorts with 100% organic cotton plain t-shirts most of the time. If I go out at night I'll wear some of my more formal clothing, however this is not often, now being a mum of two I don't get out a lot!

How many items per year do you add and remove?
On average I purchase approximately 10 items of clothing per year and I donate to charity around 10 items per year.

What is the most expensive item in your wardrobe? My hens dress made by label Talulah, being $400.

Which items hold the most emotional value and why? My yellow woollen jacket from Miss Selfridge purchased in London whilst backpacking around the world. Nicknamed it 'mustard'. I've had it now for 12 years and still looks new. Everyone comments when I wear it. Also My hens dress, best night out I've ever had with all of my most dearest friends.

I have well over 100 pieces of clothing in my wardrobe, many I have had for years, many are charity or garments remade, some are even clothes I made myself, despite this, I own too many clothes. The clothes I wear the most are my jumpers and jeans, even in summer, this probably accounts for 30% of my wardrobe, too many of my clothes go unworn. In the last couple of years I have probably added about 30 items of clothing to my wardrobe each year, and I have recycled or donated probably about 10 items per year, clearly not a balanced ratio. The item that holds most emotional value for me is my seasalt rain jacket, I have had this coat for over 2 years and wear it almost everyday, it completes most of my outfits and means I never have to worry about the weather.

Regarding my wardrobe it’s been a struggle to not buy things I don’t need for the past 2 years. I moved from California to Costa Rica and started learning more on fashion and sustainability and decided to change how I shop. Here there aren’t many sustainable clothes options so what I have been doing is Not buying, that is it. I could buy on line and import things but that wouldn’t make the product so sustainable, so I try not to shop and use what I have.

I love colorful and playful clothing so these items go well with a lot of other clothes I own.

In 2013 and 2014, I didn’t purchase as much clothes because a had a small budget for it being a student in university. I only purchased around 10 articles of clothing per year on both years. In 2015, I started working for H&M and had a large discount on the clothes we sold so I purchased 38 articles of clothing that year. In 2016, I was still working for H&M and my purchase soared up to 47 new articles of clothing in just that year. In 2017, I started getting more aware about the impact of overconsumption and the fashion industry. I also stopped working at H&M and started a new job as an apparel and textile designer for ANTHILL fabric gallery. My purchases for that year was only 27 new articles of clothing. In 2018, I swore to purchase less and most of the clothing I got that year were gifts and purchased at thrift shops. I purchased only 16 articles of clothing that year.

The most expensive thing in my wardrobe is my panyo dress from ANTHILL.

The item that holds the most emotional value to me is one of the first prototypes I made for ANTHILL that I kept.
I probably Have around 100 pieces of clothing owning mostly tops and sweaters. This is mainly due to the fact that I rarely throw clothes away and have items of clothing since i am 10 years old . I rarely give away clothing as I am very emotionally attached to my pieces. I always change up what I wear and try to always use everything in my wardrobe to experiment. i think the best way of of using everything in your closet is by being aware of what you have, by organizing your wardrobe and formulating outfits . Last year I only purchased 5 items of clothing so hopefully this year my goal is to purchase none. The best place to go shopping is in your wardrobe

I have about 400-500 pieces of clothing!? Yes it soounds extreme, however all of these items are second hand, vintage, from clothes swaps, handmade or bought from artists / small businesses. I've collected these items over the last 20+ years. I also use a lot of my personal wardrobe for fashion shows and styling photo shoots.

I wear my jeans (long in winter , short in summer) the most and my vintage shearling jacket.

I go through phases with adding and removing items. It's like a continual cycle with the local op shops! It's all about the item I find, I coud find several gems in a month or none for half a year.

Most expensive items are my vintage Miu Miu platforms and my vintage leather tassel jacket.

The clothing with the most emotional value are all the pieces I've made myself, most are upcycled.

The reason my wardrobe is like this is because I started collecting when I was a poor student studying fashion. I couldn't afford designer clothes but wanted to be expressive while also studying how quality vintage clothing was made. I loved finding these items and then even after I could afford more I found other clothing stores s boring! Sustainable by default!! Would love to reduce the volume though, its ridiculous.

I have around 150 items, and I wear 70% of these. 30 are mostly dresses that I have used for special occasions, and coats. My most expensive item are my 300 USD boots that have lasted 5 years since I tend to repair them. I tend to remove and add about 10 items per year. I usually remove something as soon as something new comes in. My jackets and some dresses hold emotional value to me.

I have around 70 items in my wardrobe as I physically can't fit anything else in ! but another wardrobe in the attic for summer clothes and winter coats and jumper t-shirts in plastic boxes under the bed so would say probably about 250 items. Interestingly I have a core of clothes that I have had for 6-10 years which I love and I will wear until they are worn out . I remove 10 items a year which always tend to be the impulse buys, so better to invest in something I love and then wear continuously. It was good to evaluate my wardrobe and discovered a few favourites.

I'm a vegan stylist, but still have a few pre-vegan items in my wardrobe. Because I'm really interested in sustainability, I have changed my wardrobe slowly over time and have held on to a few items that I know will last.

When I turned vegan, I also started to look at my shopping habits and footprint. This has changed the way I shop, and now I would only add an item or two every 4 months - if it's needed.

I run visible mending workshops so am a really big advocate in keeping what we need and upcycling and mending.

I own around 100 items now including shoes. I would wear my jeans and pre-loved Isabel Marant blazer the most with my new Veja trainers (these were something I wanted to invest in).

My most expensive item is my JW Anderson bag. This was a pre-vegan purchase but is something I haven't yet passed on to the right person.

My clothing does hold quite a few memories for me - but it's my preloved finds that are the most sentimental because I often have something in mind for quite a while and when I find it secondhand I really cherish it!

M

I don't know why I was surprised to count 144 items of clothing in my wardrobe, but I was! (Thankfully, I left out shoes and bags...). This was such a useful exercise because it allowed me to really meditate on the lifecycle of my clothes, my favorite pieces, and how my buying patterns have changed over time. It was interesting to break it down into type of clothing, as I've noticed a few people did - secondhand vs new vs made. These were my stats:
New pieces: 25

Gifted pieces: 19

Secondhand: 67

Made: 33
I'm looking forward to being more intentional with my clothing purchases (or lack thereof) moving forward. It's obvious that none of us NEED any more clothing - with an average of 100 pieces in our closets, we're spoiled for choice. I'm realizing the lust for newness in myself, and I'm trying to tame it where I can by wearing my pieces in different ways (I really loathe wearing the same outfit the exact same way more than once, which as I'm writing it sounds..impossible). As with many others here, my most sentimental items are pieces from my grandmothers - a mens-style blue and white oxford, and a psychedelic-print maxi that was made by my grandmother for my mother's prom in the 1970's and altered for my grandmother's second wedding in 2003. Can you imagine? Ok, photo attached for your reference because how cool is that dress?!

I have about 100 pieces of clothes in my wardrobe. I wear 30% of them weekly.I own about 30 pair of shoes. I wear 4 of them weekly. There are lots of pieces of clothes that I have never wear, I would say 30%. I've bought about 40 clothes since the beginning of the year. At least 35 of them were thrifted or bought second hand. I sell or give about 50 pieces of clothes a year. My most expensive piece of clothes is my Yves Saint Laurent vintage dress. I couldn’t find what is my most valued item.

The oldest piece of clothing I have is a jumper that I bought in 2012. After every six months I recycle the clothes that I don't wear, give it to charity or someone in need. Right now, in my wardrobe most of the western clothes are worn at least twice a month. I have only one pair of jeans which I don't wear much as I don't find it comfortable. I prefer to wear leggings.
Asian clothes are mostly worn on an occasion.

I don't do shopping a lot unless I really need something. I feel you are buying more and more clothes but you only wear few of your favourites so what is the actual point of buying something that you just like and you well never wear.

I have 40 items of clothing in my wardrobe. This year I've added 4 pieces to it so far. Most of the clothes have been there for about 2/3 years. I remove about 5-10 pieces when I have a sort out but i always make sure they are reused and never end up in landfill. I have been so considerate this past year of how many clothes I buy which has helped me buy more valuable clothing and slowly create a sustainable wardrobe full of garments I cherish. My most expensive item is probably a dress or a two piece suit which is around £50 - £60. I hold a lot of emotion for most of my second hand one off pieces such as a shell suit jacket I purchased in a vintage shop around 2 years ago and I have never got bored of it. I'm trying to make my wardrobe 100% sustainable by only purchasing new items if I value them but trying to buy mostly second hand.

I find my wardrobe to be quite interesting. While I have not counted just yet, my wardrobe has changed quite a bit over the past year or so as I've become more passionate about my wardrobe's impact on the planet. Much of my clothing now are higher quality items that last ages - more classic silhouettes rather than fast fashion styles. I don't shop often, however I do find myself interested in browsing and on occasion will buy something if i find its missing in my closet. My most expensive items tend to be my handbags/shoes/accessories. I value high quality handbags/shoes/accessories that last many years. Many of my handbags however have come from my mother, who doesn't wear them anymore and passed them along to me.

I don't have a wardrobe but a clothing rack. I actually have three clothing racks. One is at home and the other two in my atelier. I run an upcycling fashion brand. This three clohing racks are in constant evolution and in an organic relationship.
When I go collecting second hand, donated or discarded materials for upcycling, some items stay at home, other enter directly to the upcycling process. I also have basic items and sports clothing that I buy second hand for myself, I do not upcycle this because they are of a lower quality, but I use them myself for as long as possible. I only use second hand items. I have some new items, which is mainly shoes.
Number of pieces: it varies from 40 to 80 pieces. Shoes: 15 to 20 pairs.
Which year I purchased each item: I am constantly buying second hand. New shoes I buy one to three pairs per year and I use them for many years.
I sell everything I don't need anymore at flea markets or I give it directly to people who wants them.

Can you identify which items you wear the most? = jackets, shoes, underwear
How many items per year do you add and remove? = from 40 to 100

What is the most expensive item in your wardrobe? My style and body have changed a lot since then - my shopping habits too.

The item of clothing I wear the most would perhaps be a pair of Topshop black trousers I bought in an outlet store in 2012.
