         <title>Bartolomeu Dias</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Bartolomeu Dias was the first European explorer to sail around the southern tip of Africa discovering what is called the Cape of Good Hope.&nbsp;<br>2. On October 10th, 1487 King John II of Portugal assigned Bartolomeu Dias to sail to the southern tip ofAfrica in hopes of finding a trade route that would lead them to India.<br>3. Bartolomeu was also supposed to be searching for a man named Prester John, a supposed Christian King of Ethiopia.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. When Zheng He was born his given name was Ma He. He was born in the Yunnan Province in 1371. His father and grandfather were Muslim leaders of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty.&nbsp;<br>2. Ma He served the prince well and rose in the ranks of the servants. Soon he was one of the prince's closest advisors. He earned honor and the prince awarded him by changing his name to Zheng He.<br>3.&nbsp;He became a Emperor of China</div>]]></description>

         <title>Vaso de Gama</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Vasco da Gama was given a fleet of ships by the king and told to find a trade route around Africa to India. He was also told to find any other trading opportunities along the way.<br>2. Thousands of sailors lost their lives in attacks and shipwrecks while trying to reach India for years before Vasco da Gama made the successful voyage.<br>3. Vasco da Gama was given Vidigueira, a newly created county in 1519. During this year he also became the first non-royal blood count in Portugal.<br>Vasco da Gama contracted malaria on the third trip and died soon after arriving in India.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Ferdinand Magellan</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Magellan had traveled to India by sailing around Africa, but he had the idea that there may be another route by traveling west and around the Americas. The King of Portugal did not agree and argued with Magellan. Finally, Magellan went to King Charles V of Spain who agreed to fund the voyage.&nbsp;<br>2. As Magellan's ships sailed south the weather turned bad and cold. On top of that, they had not brought enough food. The sailors decided to mutiny and tried to steal three of the ships. Magellan fought back, however, and had the leaders executed.&nbsp;<br>3. After stocking up on supplies, the ships headed to the Philippines. Magellan became involved in an argument between local tribes. He and around 40 of his men were killed in a battle. Meanwhile, 18 of the remaining sailors sail the whole world.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Francisco Pizarro</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Francisco was an ambitious man, however, and wanted to improve his lot in life. He heard stories of the riches of the New World and wanted to travel there and find his own fortune.<br>2. Pizarro eventually became friends with explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa. In 1513, he joined Balboa on his expeditions.<br>3. Pizarro and his men set out to meet with Atahualpa. Atahualpa felt he had nothing to worry about. Pizarro only had a few hundred men while he had tens of thousands. However, Pizarro set a trap for Atahualpa and took him prisoner. He held him ransom for a room full of gold and silver. The Inca delivered the gold and silver, but Pizarro executed Atahualpa anyway.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Columbus and his brother, Bartholomew, knew that there were great riches to be had in China and East Asia. However, traveling overland by the Silk Road was dangerous and a sea route around Africa seemed much too long. Columbus thought he could sail straight to China by crossing the Atlantic Ocean. <br>2. Columbus spent years trying to convince someone to pay for his voyage. He first tried to get King John II of Portugal to pay for his journey, but the King was not interested.          <title>Vasco Nunez de balboa</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Once Vasco arrived at the settlement, Balboa discovered that most of the colonists had been killed by nearby native peoples. He then convinced the remaining colonists to move to the western side of the Gulf of Uraba.<br>2. They established the town of Darién on the Isthmus of Panama, which is a small strip of land that connects Central America and South America. Balboa became the interim governor of the settlement.<br>3. The news of the discovery arrived after the king had sent Pedro Arias de Ávila to serve as the new governor of Darién.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
