Sandstone, Shale and Mudstone are Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are one of the three rocks in cycle. Shale and mud-stone are formed from relatively finely grained rock collecting at the bottom of lakes, rivers, etc., the pressure from the water and other sediments cement the particles together.

Sandstone is formed from weathered particle of igneous rock (sand). The layers of sand get compressed in the bottom of lakes and other bodies of water. These layers then solidify and become sandstone.
