What is the problem?
International students are failing to assimilate into American universities at an increasing rate (Fischer, 2014).
Why is it a problem?
Failure to assimilate can lead international students to struggle academically and socially, and may even cause students to abandon their study plans and return to their home countries.
Why is it important to discuss this problem?
International students diversify campuses, create opportunities for cultural exchange, and are an important source of tuition income for universities. Figuring out the best methods/programs for supporting and retaining those students is in the interest of both the students and the universities themselves.

Research Methodology - Interpretivism

Interpretivism believes that reality is formed through shared meaning and that concepts are not fixed; rather than starting with determined ideas, interpretivists seek to observe and allow concepts to emerge throughout research. Interpretivists also believe in naturalist approaches to research and data collection, as well as secondary data, which aligns well with my interpretation of what this study will entail.

Data Analysis: Mixed Methods

As stated in my discussion board post from last week, I feel that this particular topic would be best approached through a mixed methodology approach. My intention for this research project is to combine secondary research (literature review) with the observation/study of a single university and the success/failure of its international student assimilation programs according to student, faculty and staff opinions. Additional components of this research will also include evaluating the programs as an outside observer in terms of how well they fulfill the goals/targets of such programs. These data methods will involve both qualitative and quantitative data collection methodologies (see above), which leads me to believe that a mixed methodology would be most successful for this study.
