(Clarize G. Basco)
Fernando Amorsolo is also known as "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art". His work "The making of the Philippine Flag" is believed to have painted 10,000 pieces. The main color that are used in the painting was red, blue, yellow, and brown. The mood and visual effect of the painting can be considered as calm and serene.
The painting shows contrast of colors brown to yellow, that is not harmonious. Armorsolo made the characters and the background in his painting balanced. The color used set the moods of audience as warm because he uses brown and yellow. The yellow background symbolizes that day is a sunny day. The characters are contrasted to the background that makes it look calm and realistic. The painting is made because Fernando Armorsolo wants to remind the people on that the Philippine flag was made to show the traditions and customs that we did not realize it becomes faded.

(Jemanuel L. Lasquite)

Spoliarium is a classical painting that depicts a snippet of Roman history primarily focusing on the harsh and bloody matches of gladiators.

My interpretation of this artwork stems from my research of the topic at hand. However, I will not be covering the whole artwork, but just the chaotic side of it -- the left and center scenes.

As you can see, a bloody, possibly dead, gladiators are being dragged away from the main scene to the dark. They will be joining the countless bodies of previous gladiators that have already passed away. There are also people on the left side that are screaming for more just because of mere entertainment.

My interpretation, influenced by research, is that these men that are being dragged away represents the Filipinos that are being harassed by the Spanish colonials. Moving on, the seemingly rowdy crowd represents the "social cancer" of the time, or in other words, the unjustified treatment and the slavery that was imposed on these Filipino people.

Sources:
https://www.nationalmuseum.gov.ph/nationalmuseumbeta/Collections/Spoliarium.html
https://steemit.com/philippines/@vonromulobalsamo/juan-luna-s-spoliarium-a-short-critique?fbclid=IwAR3fh0-ggy3GcGVxr_MeR5GmlOhHPnHmXhZ7qWz_zaLjFdrTfT8dxrPJMzI#:~:text=It%20is%20believed%20that%20the,comes%20to%20the%20painting%20Spolarium

It currently hangs in the main gallery at the ground floor of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila, and is the first work of art that greets visitors upon entry into the museum.

My interpretation on the right side of the painting:
The woman sitting down on as you can see on the right side of the painting, she is interpreted as our “Inang bayan” who weeps for the Philippines.
