Bay of Pigs

The Bay of Pigs was the biggest humiliation of the Kennedy administration and was a bad look on America. The Bay of Pigs was the attempted overthrowing of the Cuban government by invasion. Yet, the invasion was not a success and only tied Fidel Castro closer to the U.S.S.R.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

This was the climax of the Cold War and is the closest the world has ever came to ending. The U.S.S.R. was placing missiles and nuclear warheads on Cuba which was only 60 miles away from U.S. mainland. The missiles were 5 minutes away and if launched would have made the U.S. launch missiles secretly located inside Turkey which would have ended in mass destruction. Thankfully Soviets took the missiles back and it was all deescalated.

U.S. Sends Troops to Vietnam

Pinochets Coupe in Chile

In September of 1973 general Augusto Pinochet successfully overthrew the Chilean government. This was done for a couple reasons including the Chilean Social Partys ties to the Soviets. So, because Nixon was worrisome about this he worked with the CIA to help overthrow the Chilean government.

Nixon´s Policy of Détente

Nixon and his party wanted a more fair balance of power. Central to this was detente which is a french word that means a relax of tension. During this time Nixon broke boundaries by going to Communist China and talking to the Chinese leader about global affairs, trading, and the halt of expansion for the Soviet Empire.

Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

Afghanistan was viewed by the Soviets as an important buffer state. They came in to support the government against islamic Mujahadeen. By 1982 the Mujahadeen still controlled most of Afghanistan and the Soviets were starting to become depleted. Because of the mountainous terrain, and because of the harsh and extreme conditions, the Soviets were unsuccessful in invading Afghanistan. The U.S. than banned grain exports to Russia, stopped peace agreements, and boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Reagans Defense Buildup
