Actually, yes! The environment is full of things that can affect my health. One that has personally affected me is indoor air quality (will explain more in a bit). Mold and dust can cause asthma and allergies. These are chronic conditions that take effort and sometimes medications to treat. Also, if someone smokes inside the home this can cause cancer in those that breath in the secondhand smoke. (ibook unit 6, pg 2). Water quality can also affect our health. If the pipes are old they can have lead in them which then gets in our water and can cause damage to our brain, kidneys, nervous system and red blood cells.( ibook unit 6 pg 3). Food source is an area that makes an impact on our health. Pesticides are used /sprayed on the crops to keep bugs off. This gets into our food and we eat the pesticides. This is something that can cause cancer.(ibook unit 6 pg 3) In fact, its proven that Round Up had caused cancer in many people. One I was surprised about was sights and sounds. It makes sense, though. Loud noises around us can increase our stress level and increased stress level over time can really impact our heath. (ibook unit 6 pg 3. ).

Genetics also play a role in my personal health. We all have genes that we inherent from our parents. Some genes have mutations and can cause chronic health conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Marfans syndrome and sickle cell anemia, to name a few. Down syndrome is another chronic syndrome that is caused by an extra chromosome that attaches when the sperm and egg unite. (ibook unit 6 pg 4).

My personal health has been affected by my environment. I have dust and pollen allergies. We didnt realize how much I was affected by dust and we werent cleaning my room very much or changing my sheets. I was snoring very badly and my mom thought I had sleep apnea. I went to the sleep doctor (almost having to have a sleep study) and an allergist. It was at the allergist we realized how sensitive I was to dust. It was at this point we have been very diligent about dusting and vacuuming my room and changing my bedding regularly. My snoring improved greatly. My allergies are controlled with meds as needed and improving the indoor air quality around me.
