Emily Gutzwiler
* Bartholowmew had the most popular bakery in town. He was known for all his baked goods, He had hired an apprentice to work in his shop but regrets it, since Bogumil wants to marry his daughter. The shop is getting ready for the King to come visit the bake shop. One morning, Bogumil went to the forest for a walk to pick some flowers for Katarzyna and saw a bee drowning, so he saved it. It turned out to be a queen bee he saved, and a fairy showed up thanking him for his heroic actions, providing him with magic honey to add to the baked goods. The fairy told him to add it to the baked goods and the bake shop will be the best in Torun and he will be the best baker. Bogumil did as he was told, and the king awarded the bake shop the best. Bartholomew was so impressed he gave his blessing to Bogumil to marry his daughter. When Bartholomew died, the bake shop was passed to Bogumil, the best baker in Torun.
Question 3: cultural elements in the book are that it has to do with a bakery. Poland has a lot of bakeries. Also, a father not wanting his daughter to marry someone who cannot support her. Bogumil isn't the wealthiest, so Bartholomeuw doesn't want his daughter to marry him
Question 4: p.36 picture. The picture shows the King eating pasteries from the baker, Katarzyna and Bogumil holding hands looking happy, and Bartholemuw happy in the corner. The picture makes me feel happy, excited, and pleased since everyone got what they wanted.

Filipino Children's Favorite Stories: Why Mosquitos Buzz Around Our Ears (Amanda)

Summary: There was a crab that told an older crab to gather frogs to sing him to sleep. The frogs sung him to sleep and then laughed because he was snoring. The crab woke up and asked why they would wake him with their laughing. The frogs blamed the snail, the snail blamed the firefly, and the firefly blamed the mosquito. The crab got fed up with the mosquito and told the other crab to kill him, so he did. Then a million other mosquitos came buzzing over so the crabs hid in their holes. The mosquitos waited for them to come out so they could attack them. The ending of the story was that when mosquitos buzz around our ears it's because they think our ear holes are where the crabs are and they are waiting for them to come out.
1. Many people practice christianity and they are very fond of music
2. Myths and tales; possible them would be to mind your own business
3.
4. (De Leon, p. 10) The picture on page is of a an angry crab coming out of a hole and frogs hopping around in terror. This picture makes me feel worried, stressed and young

Ghaddar the Ghoul: The Farmer Who Followed His Dream (Kaylee Johnson)

This was a short fable about a very poor Palestinian farmer who had a reoccurring dream about waiting outside of a market. Not knowing why he had this dream three nights in a row, he decided to follow his dream. So he went and stood outside of the market and nothing happened for three days. On the third day, a man approached him and asked him why he was standing. When the farmer explained to him the dream, he told him that he was crazy for following his dreams. The man had a reoccurring dream about finding a treasure in front of a house, which was described as the farmer's house. The farmer ran all the way back home to find the treasure. The lesson being taught is to always follow your dreams, no matter how absurd they may sound. In the picture I chose, the farmer and the man are talking and the farmer is explaining his dream. He is dressed in white garb, which symbolizes purity, and the negative man is dressed in black, which is symbolic for negativity. This dipole was created by the artist to contrast the two characters and ultimately help further teach the lesson. A stereotype may be that being poor gives a greater reasoning to go to extreme measures out of hope, i.e. standing outside of a market for three days in hopes of something happening.

Claire Bergman
1. The Dragon Prince from the sea and the Goddess Au Co from the sky have one hundred children that came from eggs. Their children grew old and had grandchildren some of whom were immortal while others were human, but all lived or are living a happy life. The story ends with the Dragon Prince being called back to the sea by his father to take over the kingdom, but he has to leave his goddess wife behind.
2. A key theme throughout the story is the love for the Earthy and family.
3. The story discusses how the goddess and dragon prince created a world for their family full of love for the earth and tradition. For example, a young woman's parents had to bring the young man's parents an offering of salt in order to request that a marriage be arranged. The salt symbolizes trust and friendship.

Zirak and the Ring-Dove by Elizabeth Laird/2008/Fable Iraq Jessica Bugayong

1. A ring-dove and her sisters get trapped by a bird catcher's nest and the ring-dove tells her sisters to all fly at the same time so they can lift the nest and escape from the bird catcher. They hide in the middle of the city and the ring-dove calls her friend Zirak, who is a rat, to come chew the net and free them. Zirak wants to chew ring-dove out first but ring-dove insists that he chews her sisters free first because she knows Zirak will not help them because he is only friends with her. Zirak is able to save all the doves before a cat arrives.
2. The lesson that this fable teaches is that true friendship is putting others over oneself, this may symbolize that the people of Iraq value selflessness.
I see a typical Arabic town and people looking up at the doves caught in the nest. The scene is humorous because a group of doves caught in a net flying through the middle of the city is a very odd sight that one wouldn't see on a typical day. I think the adults in the picture are very confused and the little boy is surprised at the sight and pointing the birds out to his mother.

The Boys Who Met The Trolls In The Hedal Woods
In this short folktale, there was a poor couple with two sons, those two sons knew how to go to Hedal because they knew the routes. However, their curiosity hit them and wanted to go see a hut in Maela, but what they encountered instead frightened them: the trolls. The trolls had one eye to guide themselves through the forest and while chasing after the two boys, the boys took the eye away and bribed them to give them buckets of gold and silver.
3. The culture of living in farms and having scarce resources is seen throughout this short story because the only thing that the two boys asked for was the gold and silver. These boys represent the farm side of the Norwegian culture in which they have to go to the city to look for resources.
4. (pg 11) The Trolls are huge compared to the poor boy. The boy is in terror because he is holding onto a hatchet. The Troll is confused and ready to go after the boys.

This story is a folktale that emphasizes the close connection that people from Korea have with animals and how they care more about the well-being of the animals than about their jobs. My favorite part was when the cat and dog decided to go looking for their owner's coin.

In the picture on page 16, the cat and dog begin their adventure of looking for the coin. In the picture we can see the owner,, who is in a depressed state because he no longer has a source of income, in the background while the cat and dog are in the front yard in the middle of winter, ready to leave. The three words that I would use when looking at this picture would be hopeful, encouraging, and inspiring. The characters are a dog and cat so they aren't saying much to each other.

1. The story I read was called, "The Cat Who Came Indoors". It was about a wild cat who lived all by herself and when she got tired of living alone in the bush she found herself a husband another wild cat. One day her husband got attacked by a leopard so the girl cat thought the leopard was better and went to live with him because she thought he was the finest creature of the jungle. Then the leopard got attacked and she lived with the attacker, and that kept happening again and again until she lived with a man. One day the man and his wife got in a fight and she kicked her husband out and now the wife was the finest creature in the jungle & the wild cat and the wife lived together forever.
2. The genre of these short stories are folktales. I think this book relates to their culture because it's full of African legends and I think in Africa they take these legends and myths very serious. So having them written as a children's book is nice because they want their children to be educated on these important legends and myths.
3. I think the wild cat goes with who ever she thinks has the most power. And in this country I think part of their culture is that they have strong hierarchies and they want to be guided by whoever has the most power as well.
4. The picture representing the story is all of the animals in the jungle surrounding the hut when the wife pushes her husband out, and it has the wild cat living on top of the roof.

One day the bird was carrying to eggs, the brown and blue. The bird dropped the two eggs, one on the end of the river and one on the other end of the river. From the brown eggs, a female was born and from the blue egg, a male was born. Both began living their lives on their own. The boy eventually got tired of being alone and decided to explore down the river. At the same time, the girl's hair got swept down the river, her hair warped around the boy's leg and drew them together. They embraced and that was the beginning of the Mandaya people.
1.) It was similar to the Adam and Eve story.
2.) In this picture the two characters are standing in front the sunset. It was warm, light, colorful, and vibrant.
