BaKalanga was a medieval kingdom that was located in modern day Zimbabwe, from 1220-1450. This kingdom came about after the fall of the Maphungubwe. The rulers of Maphungubwe brought about many artistic and stone carving traditions from Maphungubwe. The institution of the Mambo was also because of the medieval kingdoms. The kingdoms of Zimbabwe controlled the Ivory and gold trade, and also practiced economic domestication. As a result of the fall of the kingdom, two groups emerged on the north and south axis and soon came together to form the largest and most powerful kingdom, the Rozwi empire.
