In the first week, I missed class due to late class registration. Luckily, Sir Suhaimi had prepared a video for me to watch, learn, digest and appreciate the knowledge given. As I watched the video, it felt like a journey of inspiration and purpose. It started with an introduction to the subject SCSH1201 which sparked my curiosity, as I would learn more about the principles of sustainable development while tying it to real-world challenges.

I learned that systems thinking is when we analyze and understand the complexity and dynamics of ideas. Then, I started thinking about what was happening in the current developments. Have the resources on this earth been used in a good way or has unsustainable exploitation of resources occurred?

I started to imagine myself working to uncover issues in Malaysia (or outside Malaysia) and discuss solutions to those issues. I realize that taking this subject is an opportunity to not only learn about sustainability but to actively shape a better and balanced future.

In the second week, I also missed this class again due to late registration for the subject. As I watched the video, I felt the connection between faith and action unfold before me. I see the stories of student-led initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and food banks paint a vivid picture of how sustainability can thrive on campus. In economic sustainability perspective, zakat and sadaqah remind me of Ramadan's generosity and inspire me to think beyond myself, embracing a vision for lasting and meaningful change.

I realized that all Muslims are responsible for preserving the environment by developing sustainability in our environment (to water and trees) as it is a religious duty demanded by Allah. We, as Khalifah on earth, should increase mushawarah to create a meaningful ukhuwwah among us. We also should avoid being a corruptor to the natural resources as Allah said in Surah Al-Qasas "And do good as Allah has been good to you. And do not seek to cause corruption in the earth. Allah does not love the corrupters"

In the video above, Sir Suhaimi illustrates how Islamic principles provide a solid foundation for sustainable development. The focus on holistic education inspired me to envision a learning environment where intellectual growth is balanced with moral values that foster a sense of responsibility towards society and the environment.

In Islam, the sustainability of five things (life, faith, mind, property, and lineage) is considered to be an objective of the law (Maqasid Shariah) and Muslims are duty-bound by their religion to ensure the sustenance of these five objectives. The ultimate objective of Maqasid Shariah is to promote and protect the well-being of people and nature.

As highlighted in the video, spirituality acts as a guiding light for ethical decision-making, reminding me that sustainability is not just about conserving resources but about creating a balanced and harmonious world for future generations. Even most goals in UN SDGs are aligned with the spirit of Islamic law.

Finally, I had a physical class in week 4. We reflected on the journey humanity has taken toward sustainable development. It all began in Stockholm, in 1972, where governments first united to address the earth's environmental challenges. Then came Rio de Janeiro in 1992, expanding the focus to balance between environmental preservation and global development. Fast forward to the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, where nations committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2002, Johannesburg turned its focus to oceans, coasts and islands, underscoring their critical role in the ecosystem. Finally, Bali in 2007 brought together over 180 countries, proving the power of collective ambition in combating climate change in the world.

Each of these milestones inspires me, illustrating the relentless global effort toward sustainability. As we face mounting challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity, these frameworks remind us that sustainable development is not merely a goal but an ongoing process that demands participation from all levels (individuals, communities and nations).

In week 5, I learn about the concept of Sejahtera for sustainable development. As I reflected on the concept of Sejahtera, it became clear how deeply sustainability is intertwined with cultural and spiritual values, particularly in the Malaysian context. The integration of Sejahtera in the National Philosophy of Education emphasizes not only intellectual growth but also emotional, spiritual and physical well-being.

I found myself drawn to the perspectives of Lagom, Ikigai and Ubuntu. Each offers unique insights into balance, simplicity and harmony in life. These concepts focus on well-being and prosperity for individuals and also communities.

The idea of localizing Sejahtera encourages us to adapt global sustainability goals to our local context while maintaining cultural values. This topic has inspired me to think about how I can contribute to sustainable practices in my own life.

The gallery is beautiful and provides valuable insight into the university’s rich history with achievements and commitment to sustainability and community well-being. I found that:

IIUM stands out as a recipient of the International Green Gown Award. I can see IIUM's dedication to sustainable growth.

The gallery also highlights IIUM’s contributions to religious and intellectual preservation, such as a suitcase from the first Islamic finance conference in Makkah.

Artifacts such as a debate competition trophy from Australia showcase IIUM’s academic achievements, preserving a legacy of intellectual excellence.

IIUM’s efforts extend to health preservation, as demonstrated by its role during the pandemic when the ICC served as a vaccination center for the Gombak community.

All the displays and narratives in the gallery will definitely motivate students (like me!) to embark on a journey of knowledge that has an impact on contributing to sustainability and development goals. May my contributions and achievements will be on display there in the future!

Our second tour was to the iArchives Gallery at IIUM Dar Al-Hikmah Library. Each exhibit tells a story, starting with the graduation robe as a symbol of success after years of hard work. Looking at the robe, I realized how it represents more than just academic achievement. The uniformity of the robe reminded me of the equality shared among graduates despite their different fields of study.

Moving on, we came across a poster detailing the history of the IIUM Song. The lyrics resonated in my mind, capturing the university’s mission to nurture the Caliph to foster change and uphold Islamic values on this earth.

Finally, we saw pictures of Taaruf Week where this tradition is full of memories for every IIUM student. These images made me think about the first time our friendship was formed during Taaruf Week. Pictures of students taking the pledge during the Bai'ah Ceremony which marks the official start of their journey.

Walking through the gallery, we realized how this tradition not only preserves IIUM's cultural heritage but also fosters a Sejahtera-driven environment that inspires students to grow and give back to society.

These green spaces not only cool the atmosphere but also enhance the campus' biodiversity, regulate the temperature and improve air quality. As a resident, I was reminded of my responsibility to protect this ecosystem by avoiding tree-cutting and engaging in reforestation efforts, in line with SDG 15: Life on Land.

Walking around, we saw recycling bins strategically placed in the mahallah. These bins make it easy for students to dispose of their recyclable waste responsibly, reducing their contribution to massive landfills. This small but important initiative is in line with SDG 13: Climate Action, addressing the pressing issue of improper waste management. By using these bins, residents can promote a cleaner and more sustainable living environment.

Living in Mahallah Nusaibah reminds me that we are more than just residents. We are stewards of our environment, striving to create a culture of sustainability that extends beyond campus life.

The challenges to sustainable development are complex, with inequalities in access to essentials such as education, healthcare, food and clean water blocking many paths.

I recall walking past a university composting project. I can see a glimpse of the circular economy in action. It reminded me of economic sustainability, the need to minimize waste and optimize resources. On a social level, we need to create a sustainable community where communities thrive with equity, efficiency and environmental responsibility, WHERE no one is left behind. However, the environmental aspect is a major challenge as humans often extract more than the earth can replenish, leading to unsustainable exploitation.

Addressing these challenges requires a united front where individuals, governments and institutions adopt mindful consumption and innovate sustainable solutions.

Sustainable development is not just a goal, it is our shared responsibility.

Reflecting on the roles of institutions in sustainable development, I see a collaborative effort where global, national, local and individuals play interconnected roles to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the global level, the UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) serves as a conductor, guiding policies and coordinating operations in 162 countries to align efforts with the 2030 Agenda. Nationally, Malaysia showcases a strategic roadmap through its phased implementation of the SDGs within its Eleventh, Twelfth, and Thirteenth Malaysia Plans. Each phase tackles priorities step-by-step, from addressing immediate challenges to focusing on long-term sustainability. Locally, institutions such as universities and NGOs become agents for change by fostering awareness and innovation programs. As individuals, our role is vital. We also are the agents of change. By adopting sustainable habits, we bridge the gap between policy and practice.

Thus, sustainable development is a shared responsibility, ensuring sustainable development is not just a goal but a way of life.

The third tour began when in the morning we got another task from our lecturer, Sir Suhaimi, to explore any location on the IIUM Gombak and reflect on how it contributes to the university's role in promoting sustainability. So, we chose our classroom. As I stepped inside, I took a moment to really observe the space that I often take for granted.

The classrooms are equipped with everything needed for a smooth learning experience such as projectors, computers, speakers, whiteboards, air conditioning, and sturdy tables and chairs. These facilities, designed for comfort and functionality, reflect SDG 4: Quality Education where IIUM provides us with a conducive environment to learn and grow.

Standing there, we recalled our visit to the IIUM Gallery, where an iconic wooden chair-table set reminded us of the university’s commitment to sustainability. The same furniture was right in front of us, a symbol of IIUM’s careful balance between functionality and preserving resources. We realized how these chairs, are unique to our university and are not only practical but also a legacy to be preserved through proper care.

As we completed our task, I thought about how classrooms are more than just spaces for formal learning. They provide an atmosphere for meaningful discussion about global issues, where individuals from diverse backgrounds can share perspectives and work toward solutions.

I would love to see IIUM invest in solar energy to further contribute to sustainability on campus. I'm not sure if the university has already taken steps in this direction, but it would be amazing if they did.

Solar energy could not only reduce the campus’s carbon footprint but also promote a greener, more eco-friendly environment.

Since IIUM is a well-known university in Malaysia, IIUM would set an example for other institutions, showing how investing in green technologies can make a real difference for the planet and future generations.

In week 10, I learn that sustainable development indicators beyond GDP, such as the Human Development Index and Ecological Footprint. This reminded me that progress is not just about economic output but about human and environmental well-being. The challenges of poverty, social exclusion, economic disparities and environmental degradation are becoming more than abstract concepts. They are vivid realities that demand thoughtful action.

The introduction of the the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize interconnected global objectives such as ending poverty and promoting equal opportunities. They are a call to align our efforts with these universal goals, making our actions purposeful and impactful.
