When I was student teaching in 8th grade Literature, we did a unit on advertising and the students couldn't get enough of the I Have, Who Has game that we played for vocabulary! They had a great time trying to get the fastest time after memorizing the words and wanted to get the fastest time in all the sections.

Possible Sentences is a pre-reading vocabulary strategy that activates students' prior knowledge about content area vocabulary and concepts.

Before reading, students are provided a short list of vocabulary words from their reading, which they group and eventually use to create meaningful sentences. After reading, students check to see if their "possible sentences" were accurate or need revising.

I haven't tried this strategy, but it has to be a great way to spark students' curiosity about their content area words and reading. By asking your students to guess how the words may be used in the text, you are hoping they are as equally enticed to read the selection and determine if their sentences were accurate.

You could have students do a Roll and Record sheet to practice their vocabulary words. Depending on the number they roll on their die, will depend on how they portray their vocabulary word. Here is a breakdown of what their tasks could be based on the number they roll:
1. Give a definition
2. Give a synonym & antonym
3. Write a sentence
4. Draw a picture
5. Make a connection
6. Your choice (they get to choose one of the above to do)

I found it on Pinterest.
Bernie Oppold

Some of my best (or at least most creative) ideas often have to do with vocabulary. For one of my units, each word gets an action. When we encounter that word in the text, the whole class stands up and acts out the word. Many of the words come up later in the text as well so we still stand up and act them out. I have 7th and 8th graders who still remember the actions for the vocab words that they learned in 6th grade!

COSTAS higher level of thinking from AVID. It is a strategy that was first introduced to me through an AVID training. It has three different levels of thinking and can be applied throughout any content areas. The levels start at the bottom with knowledge that you can find in the text, second is using text and brain power, third is just using your brain and making inferences. I would be more than happy to bring in the template of levels and prompts to get students thinking.
This would be appropriate to use K-12, in the appropriate context and using front loading.

A friend who teaches middle school mentioned that she has her students do "Acrostic" vocabulary to help them learn words. For each letter of the word, they must write a sentence beginning with that letter that helps define the word. This seems like a fun and memorable way to learn new vocab!
