"Shall I, an American, be a mistress to the cruel, bloodthirsty Santa Anna and thus disgrace my country? Never!"

This quote exemplifies sensational literature again through it's conflict and cultural taboos. She refuses
to disgrace her American culture through the taboo of involving herself with Santa Anna. This serves as a conflict as she is being forced to do something not morally correct. The author does an excellent job presenting sensational literature throughout this piece of literature.

" 'Never!' cried I, as I thought of my sex. 'liberty or death!' and as I spoke I made a pass at him with my cutlass which I still held in my hand."

This quote is a prime example of the author using sensational literature. By invoking deep emotion through the
character's eyes when she expresses her gender should not label her as someone else's property. Additionally, this associates greatly with conflict throughout the story, creating more of a sensational literary element.
