Team 5 - Mathilde, Tobias, Cecilie, Frederikke and Jasmin 3. The film shows the challenging life as an aborigine through Samson´s and Delilah´s story. The aborigines in the film live under extremely bad conditions. They are poor and got very few resources. Their healthcare center is in a little trailer, and they can barely afford medicine, not alone food. The film also shows different kind of abuse, both alcohol and sniffing gas is a big problem in the film. The kids have no chance at getting an education, because their educational system is not existing. Therefor is it hard for them to leave the community and get a chance at a better future. It is off course important to say not all aborigines live this way. 4. What does the film say about the family lives of the two main characters? It shows us, that they do not live in a typically nuclear family, with a mother, a dad and siblings. They must take care of themselves and get their own food by hunting. Delilah takes care and responsibility of her grandmother. They paint pictures together and sell them to get food and medicine. They live in filthy clothes and do not have the privileges to take a bath every day or wash their clothes. They do not talk much with each other, It is more their actions, that shows their feelings and approach.

9. What does it say about children, adults, males, females, and cultures?

- The Aboriginal children in this story have a lot of responsibility compared to other American children. Both Delilah and Samson are orphan. Delilah lives with her grandmother who Delilah have to take care of by herself. Delilah makes sure that her grandmother gets her medicine, she goes to the grocery store and makes sure they have enough money for food by selling patterned carpets to white men which her and her grandmother made herself over many hours.

- The adults in this society does not take much responsibility. In this movie neither Samson nor Delilah have any parents, they probably died too young because of bad hygiene and shortage of food.

- We are given the impression that the Aboriginal society is very poor. They live in a very deserted area.
10.Write a comment about your own reaction to the film. What have you learned from it?

- This film is quit boring, because not much is said, and it is easy to lose focus. The film is very uniformly, and it makes it uninteresting for the viewer. And because of that it is very confusing. We have learned about Aboriginal culture. We learned that the Aboriginal society is very poor. They live in a very deserted area.

7. What ideas, themes and issues does the film explore? How are they analyzed or explored?

- The life for the Aboriginal is difficult and they do not have a lot of opportunities. And they have a different way to show that they are sad. Delilah and Samson both cuts their hair off when they feel responsible for the grandma and Delilah. Another issue is also that Samson and Delilah are exiled from the town they were living in before because Delilah did not take good enough care of her grandmother and Samson because his head is not fine from the gas he is sniffing.

8. The two main characters are called Samson and Delilah. These names are also biblical characters. What is the story of Samson and Delilah? Find out how their story relates to the characters in the movie. What is similar and what is different?

- The biblical story has some episodes that machetes the story about Samson and Delilah. In the biblical story Samson is the one to go over to Delilah’s house and in the biblical story it is also samson who goes to another city, where he meets Delilah. He is going to Gaza there he meets her. Another thing that matches the movie is that it is Samson who always is trying to be together with Delilah and in the biblical story Samson is lying to her, so she keeps wanting to talk to him. The last think that matches the movie is that they fall in love. The differences in the movie is that Delilah not is trying to take his “power” away and that they talk together in the bible. There is also a difference about samsons hair. In the movie he cuts his hair off because he feels responsible and in biblical story there is “power” in his hair.

11. Make a characterization of Delilah and explain her social situation.

Delilah is a young aboriginal girl, who is sixteen years old. She is the one taking care of her grandmother, and they live together. Delilah and her grandmother paint aboriginal art. Delilah has long brown hair, dark brown eyes and her clothing is very worn and old. When her grandmother dies Delilah is held responsible for the traditional punishment. Delilah is in grief when Samson decides to protect Delilah from ostracism from their community. Delilah turns her back on their community with Samson, but they discover that it's hard to live on their own. Delilah searches for a way to improve their living situation by painting again. She tries desperately to sell her painting, but no one wants to buy it, which puts her in a very desperate situation because it was the only way to get money to live for.

12. Make a characterization of Samson and explain his social situation.

Samson is a young aboriginal boy who is fifteen years old. He has a classic aboriginal look with brown curly hair and dark brown eyes. Samson lives with his brother's band, but in the film, we get the impression that he is responsible for taking care of himself. Samson sniffs petrol every day and it makes him very dizzy. He is not coming from the best environment and that is expressed when there is a violent episode at Samson's house. Samson is often in his own world and doesn't notice his surroundings. It seems like the sniffing is a way for him to escape from his life. Samson is in love with Delilah and they end up together.

5. Do you think that the film ends optimistically? Why?

The movie has an optimistic ending, because Samson and Delilah end up together in the end, even though they have had several problems on their journey together. It seems like Delilah finally accepts Samson for who he is, and wants to be with him after all this time. At the end, they found a little house away from their village, that Delilah restored. It seems like they probably are going to spend the rest of their lives together at this place.

6. How does the impression given in the film correspond to the impression you have been given in some of the texts you have read?

The texts we have read gave a more positive impression of the aborigines than the movie did. In the texts it did not say much about how miserable and poor the lives of the aboriginals are in modern Australia. The texts only told us about how the Englishmen ruined the aboriginal people's lives, and how the aborigines took better care of the land than the Englishmen. They did not say anything about how the aborigines are having a hard time adjusting to the community nowadays. But the movie, on the other hand, focuses more on the problems it causes to be an aborigine.
