3. Why stereotypes can be studied from the perspective of intercultural communication?

At the time that we wanted to communicate with other cultures, we fell into the mistake of categorizing a group of people just for the assumption that they should behave according to what our imaginary dictates. Also, global culture and society could affect what we think about culture. This mistake is often called “stereotyping”, and could be a problematic issue when we face differences between our ideas and biases and how they actually behave. It is an important issue to investigate in order to relate with other cultures in an assertive and effective way in a globalized world. Stereotypes can be negative in cultural encounter terms, people tend to be inflexible and incapable to receive new information; therefore, stereotypes do not allow cultural understanding and make noise trying to interpret differences between people. So, our purpose is to find out how to get a successful cross-cultural interaction dealing with stereotypes.

According to Barna (1988), Stereotypes refer to “overgeneralized, secondhand beliefs that provide conceptual bases from which we make sense out of what goes on around us, whether or not they are accurate or fit the circumstances.” (p.181). Which means that when we interact with a person who behaves differently from us, we generate stereotypes in order to try to understand this behavior and then fit it within our cultural background to arrive at what would be "correct" for us and not seeing it from a "different or wrong" point of view.

However, the fact of generating stereotypes to try to fit in our cultural background what we see as different can create false impressions and this leads to increasing inappropriate observations and beliefs that, in turn, confirm our cultural inclinations.

I like the choice how you support your choice of a topic. I think you need to match this topic to a particular case you can apply it to and to some other concepts in the intercultural communication framework. You did a good job with the Padlet, but it is necessary to keep on working on it and the project continuously. Include extra resources that you can use as support.
