The beginning of the book starts on a peaceful day in the swamp. The hurricane is coming very soon, so they are boarding up the house's and preparing. Cort's father the next day right before the storm decides he needs to check on Cort's mom a few miles away. While he is gone the storm picks up and he is not able to return back. This enrages Cort and he is very scared in case something goes wrong. As the night goes on everything is well until Francie accidentally lets out Catfish. Catfish runs onto their house boat, which is very poorly strapped to the land. The storm now began to intensify greatly and the houseboat is starting to go down the river. They must do something so Cort decides they need to let Catfish go and try to save themselves. They got out go the houseboat into a row boat. Cort decides their only chance for survival is to find the biggest mound of dirt and climb into a tree. They locate the biggest mound and soon climb up a tree and make a small ledge they can lay on. They are now safe for the moment. While they are sitting there they notice a bear on the opposite tree that looks very scared but also doing the same thing they are doing. As the night goes on a group of wild boars started pilling up directly under their tree. Soon snakes started going into tree and one bites Liza. The storm starts to settle down and one of the wild boars starts to go crazy. Killing all the other boars and any animal and site. After it has killed everything it started hitting the tree and trying to get to them. Cort comes to the conclusion that he needs to get down and find help. He jumps from tree to tree and soon starts swimming towards their houses. As he is swimming he hears a boat so he starts yelling and the person in the boat is his dad. He tells his dad the situation and they go to the mound. The only problem is what they will do with the wild boar. They get to the mound as fast as possible, they try to get to the mound but the boar starts trying to attack them. At this moment they do not know what to do and all of the sudden the wild boar jumps down and starts attacking the boar. In a fight to the death Cort and his father are given time to get down Francie and Liza. They get them all in the boat and the wild bear wins the fight and watches them leave. They rush back to the houses and get an ambulance for the girls. At the end of the book his father and Cort make up and when Liza gets back they reveal their feelings for each other.

Cort: Cort is the main character in the book. When everything goes wrong he is the one to try and save the day and comfort Liza and Francie. Cort is very emotionally strong and he always knows what to do. He gets along with every character in the book fine and overall is a very likable person. He especially gets along with Liza who he has had a crush on for a long time. He is someone you would always want to be around and would have a good time with.

Liza: Liza is Cort's friend and also his neighbor. She also likes Cort but he does not know this. Liza is also very brave going into the storm with Cort to help save Francie. When she gets bit by a snake she is very strong and tries not to make a big deal about it.

Francie: Francie is the reason all the events in this book take place. Even though she is young and not the smartest she still handles the whole situation very well. She cooperates with Cort and Liza and does whatever they say. She is a very obedient kid who looks up to her family and friends.

Person vs Self: During most of the book Cort is at conflict with himself. He has many tough decisions that he has to make and at times is weary of his own decisions. He resolves these conflicts by trusting his gut and doing what his dad would have done. Most of the time it works out well and in their favor.

Person vs Nature: This is the biggest conflict in all of the story. This conflict starts when Francie lets Catfish (their dog outside). Catfish then ran into the boathouse which detached from the heavy winds and rain, while they were on it. After this they must find a way off of the boat. Once they do this they now need to find somewhere to go to avoid all of the animals and the flooding. They climb up a tree to their safety but still face many problems. A snake on the tree then soon bits Liza. So the rest of the time Cort has to protect them from those. This conflict is resolved once the storm has ended.

Person vs Person: This conflict was a conflict between Cort and his dad. Before the storm came Cort's dad left to go check on Cort's mother. When he went to do this he did not get back in time leaving Cort very mad. This conflict is not resolved until the end of the book where they make up and say how sorry they are.
