Because a number of violent incidents have been perpetrated by individuals who could be classified as "gamers," many people may come to the conclusion that the perpetrators were influenced by the violence in the video games which they played. While I do believe that violence in video games can result in desensitization from actual violence and aggressive behaviour, at least to an extent, I personally believe that the intensity of the violence and gore within these video games is not the factor which causes these changes. According to researchers from Oxford University, it is actually the amount of time spent playing violent video games, as opposed to the content of those games, that is connected to the problematic behavioural changes mentioned previously. However, a variety of other publications, such as this article from the San Diego Reader, argue that the high level of violence contained within particular video games has a direct impact on these detrimental behavioural developments, though many of these articles also claim that the violence portrayed in other forms of media such as movies and television shows should also be held accountable. On the other side of the coin, an article from The Independent covers a long-term study into the aforementioned forms of violent media which appears to disprove their connection with violent behaviour and questions the methodology of previous research studies which seemed to show otherwise, including their techniques of measuring "aggression in test subjects" and the fact that they usually "provide exposure to brief clips of media, rather than full narrative experiences." All in all, my research has led me to believe that prolonged exposure to all forms of violent media, including video games, movies, and television shows, can influence the development of problematic behaviours and the desensitization from actual violence in the generation of youth to some degree, though I am convinced that common sense plays an extremely important role in terms of whether or not an individual will actually carry out an act of violence as a result of the exposure, if the individual even develops behavioural problems at all.
