6. Pre-Waxed Hand Sewing Thread used by Tailors

The pre-waxed hand sewing thread used by tailors is silk thread. It comes in "skeins" and the length is an average persons arm span, which allows for them to sew with ease, without having to cut thread, which also avoids waste. A skein is very expensive as the threads are pure silk. This website also has a brick and mortar store that would allow you to purchase silk threads and wax your own threads, they make yarns for the textile industry. However this might not be worth the time and expense, depending on the budget you have and your time constraints. http://www.handweavers.co.uk/shop/silk.html
Jessica

Pre-waxed thread: Olly Newton

It is advised by Bespoke Tailors to wax all threads before sewing. this includes Basting thread, hand-sewing thread, gimp thread and many more. Waxing thread before stitching ensures the thread will now be stronger, and easier to pass the multiple layers of fabric. not only this, but waxing thread also ensures that the thread does not accidentally knot whilst it is being passed through the cloth. The strength of the waxed thread allows it to last longer as well and reduces the risk of seams being ripped and threads fraying. in bespoke tailoring, all thread is waxed by passing it through a block of Beeswax, however, Silk thread can be bought pre-waxed. Silk thread is one of the most expensive types of thread available and is sold in 1 metre lengths or 1 yard lengths. Bespoke Tailors by the pre-waxed silk thread as it saves them time and reduces the risk of having to buy more silk thread in the future if it becomes damaged or starts to fray around the buttonhole.
