They are practicing the skills they are learning in language arts. Science writing does not always have to be expository. Students can practice narrative writing when writing about their explorations. If they are more comfortable writing in their notebook in their first language, they should be allowed to do that because that is how they are thinking about their observations. Allow the student to make the notebook something useful to them. Other teachers may keep the notebooks in a bin. Some teachers glue a folder in the back to hold loose items in. The important part is that the notebook is functional to you as a teacher, and to the students while they are using them. They have many different sections that can be used to organize a lot of information in a small space. This feature makes them perfect for using in an interactive notebook.
