Substitute teaching can be difficult, but having the confidence to walk into a classroom is key because you are the teacher for that classroom that day and your students need to understand this.

I loved being a substitute! Since I would mostly sub for a relative that was a teacher the students already knew who I was and knew not to misbehave because I would absolutely tell on them.

I have not been a substitute teacher before but I was a tutor, working with K-4 and I remember having to adjust my responses to students based on age/grade level.

Prior to residency, I have not had the opportunity to be a sub. I have only observed classrooms.

The subs I do remember from school I always remember would just sit down at the desk monitoring us while we did our work and threaten us with “im going to leave a note for your teacher with your names” even if we didn’t do anything bad.

I do remember having a substitute who looked like Albert Einstein with the puffy white hair and he was a little looney but he was always ready to help us.

I haven’t substituted yet, but in these past 3 weeks I’ve started my residency, I had a day where my mentor teacher was not there and I had to lead the lesson while a substitute assisted me with the discipline. Some classes were tougher than others, but it was great having the additional support of the sub.

When I had to first substitute, it was a little stressful because the teacher left nothing to inform the substitute about lessons or procedures. And when I went to talk to the assigned administrator, we saw that the teacher had old lessons that the kids already completed. So, I would makeup games for the kids for each class period.

I remember being relieved when I would see a substitute in my class. I knew the work would be simple and if it was a sub I recognized I knew the day would be easy.

Prior to residency, I did not have prior experience working in a school environment but I did get thr opportunity to take over my mentor teachers classroom last week with the help of a sub. I took over the lessons for the day and the sub assisted me with walking around. It was a good experience because students stayed engaged and focused. We were able to complete the assignments that the teacher had assigned.

I remember a time I was in elementary school when we had a substitute that did not do any type of lesson with us. She sat in the teachers desk most of the day.

I do not remember when I had a substitute, but I can say I had a substitute in a class that was mine and I had to leave for an emergency, when I came back I walked in and my class was absolutely out of control. I slowly walked in and just stood there when the students noticed me, they stopped and started to behave.

-I remember feeling nervous about how I could focus on teaching while simultaneously keeping the class on target. Realizing how fast time flies and the importance of sticking to a schedule to stay on target.

-I remember that when I would have subs, many times they would allow students to have a “free day”. This has taught me the importance of knowing the routine and actually teaching while maintaining order.

When I had a substitute(s) they would always come in with “If you want respect, you have to earn it” demeanors. Or one would tell us their life stories (one admitted to being a a past drug addict). Then the rest would admit they had no idea what to do, and would give us word searches. I’m a pro of word searches
