Alex is a new member in an established lab. The other lab members have all been there for at least a year and have formed strong bonds. Alex feels depressed and excluded because he is introverted and finds it difficult to make friends with his lab mates. One of the other lab members (Bailey) is very opinionated and begins to pick on Alex. Bailey makes a joke about Alex's research topic, calling it "pedestrian" and "elementary." Alex pushes through the jabs and begins to get really interesting research results. Bailey, surprised, becomes envious and tells the other lab members and students in the department how helping design Alex's experiment resulted in such exciting results. Bailey's negativity and jealousy undermine Alex's hard work and dedication. When Alex tries to defend the research, Bailey publicly mocks him, telling him that the work was not interesting or novel until the advice was given. I would make Bailey realize how it would feel if Bailey was the one getting bullied, and since Alex is a new member, I would try to befriend Alex and teach Alex about the daily activities of the lab to make the ambience more welcoming. Second I would just advice him to ignore Bailey, as long as someone is there to support him he doesn't need to take in all the insults thrown his way. And third I would advice him to go to a senior and talk about this experience at work, not only is it disrespectful its hinghly un-professional.

If I needed help, I would consult the lab assistant or the head of the laboratory and expose Bailey’s behaviors. It is not befitting of a scientist in the research industry to take credit for another person’s work. If it gets worse and Alex loses faith in his work, he should finish his research then work at a different lab with a better work environment. Though, if he really was passionate about his work, I don’t think mean comments from Bailey should shake his resolve too much.
