Students must watch this Introductory Video (from Bozeman Science). It describes the course in detail and highlights the various components that are covered in APES. The information in this video will be key to building a foundation for being able to successfully navigate APES. 

Using the information from watching the video, complete the following:

1.  Copy down/sketch the Outline of the APES Flowchart (at the beginning of the video), which is the APES Road Map of Comprehension & Understanding

2.  Copy down/sketch the Planetary Boundaries "Pinwheel" Diagram

3.  Copy down/sketch the Sustainability Bullseye Diagram

4.  Copy down/sketch the APES Multi-Disciplinary Pie Diagram

5.  Copy down/sketch the 7 APES Practices (similar to the scientific method, but unique for APES)

Upon your return, notes on the video will be reviewed. The first test will include information from video/notes during the first quarter of the school year to ensure that ALL students are "on the same page" from the start.

Books to Purchase -- Choose TWO of the following:

1. The Doll House written by Henrik Ibson.

2. A Prayer for Owen Meany written by John Irving

3. Beloved written by Toni Morrison.

Students should come prepared in the first week of school to discuss and write about the novels. Writing should demonstrate student understanding of the literary aspects of the novels. Also, prepare to present an oral presentation.

Answer the following questions with examples from the book:

1. Analyze Plot -- How do you convey or express the plot of the novel?

2. Analyze Theme -- What main idea? or central idea conveyed from the book. Explain.

3. Explain functions of the main character. Analyze two characters one Major and on Minor. What aspects of these characters in the book did you choose to emphasize or highlight?

4. Analyze the setting. How does the author create the atmosphere of the setting? Where and when does the story take place? Which part of the story best describes the setting Why? And How?

--Rationale: The history of the invention of calculus shaped its uses. A study of history will give students a frame of reference for the topics that may come up during the year.

--Grading: This project will be counted as a Test Grade during the first six weeks. Late projects will NOT be accepted.

--Project Summary: Students will research the invention of calculus and decide where they stand on the debate over its true inventor - Leibniz or Newton

Students will research the debate about the true inventor of calculus and write a 3-page paper in MLA format. In this paper, you will discuss the arguments on both sides and give your opinion of which side has the stronger case and why you feel that way. Plagiarized papers will result in a grade of zero and may result in removal from the class.

Each project includes a cover page, planning/reflection activities, and an oral presentation. Projects will count as a test grade, and presentations count as a classwork grade. All assignments are due within the first two weeks of the 2026–2027 school year.

The Summer Bridge Preparation Project is designed to support incoming AP 2D Art & Design students in developing foundational skills and ideas prior to the start of the 26-27 academic year.

This project is not intended as a graded summer assignment, but as a preparatory experience that allows students to begin the course with initial investigation work, visual ideas, and early studio production.

Students who complete this project will be better prepared to meet the expectations outlined by the College Board for AP 2D Art and Design, particularly in developing a Sustained Investigation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students who engage in this preparation project will:

•  Begin developing a personal investigation grounded in a meaningful theme

•  Explore multiple visual solutions through variation and experimentation

•  Produce early artworks that demonstrate inquiry-based thinking

•  Practice documenting artistic process

•  Draft written responses aligned with AP portfolio expectations
