My post isn’t showing up anymore idk what happened. but my group is thoughly confused about this story line. so far not much is happening and we’ve read through chapter 6. it shows that there’s a human dispensary that produces the embryos and babies. It shows how it all works and a little about the society. the next few chapters talk about different characters and different things. My main question is what is the soma that the characters eat/drink????? we’re confused. So my group did not quite like the book so far for what they have read. We talked about the students who are at this “human dispensary” if you will and how weird they are. We also talked about the person who runs the whole place and how creepy he seems when it comes to creating these people and making them into certain factions they have in their society. As opposed to my group I actually have enjoyed the book so far, and find it interesting how they make the lower part of humans of their caste system and how they are unaware of what is happening to them. It is fascinating how they psychologically make them who they are to put them to use in their society for the benefit of the upper tiers in their caste system. I hope I did this correctly for the sake of my group. My group leader had three questions for us to discuss today: why we thought people stopped reproducing traditionally, what we thought would happen if our government decided to control our reproduction and how children were raised, and why negative reinforcement was being used to affect the children. We think people stopped reproducing traditionally to keep from having as many mental disabilities or genetic faults. The second question we discussed was if the government took control or reproduction and we came up with two things, the kids wouldn’t have parents to care for them they would be taken care of by machines, and they wouldn’t have parents to feel loved and attached to. Negative reinforcement was used to control kids minds to keep them away from flowers and books so they would get more work done.
From what I gathered during the group discussion today, only one person in my group enjoy the book so far. Three of us think that the book is really confusing and the parts that we understood were weird. The one that likes the book thinks that it is interesting because it isn’t really very far off from today’s society. I think it’s weird that the embryos that would usually form one child are split into ninety-six. Why would they want ninety-six people who are basically the same? Another thing I found was all of the different treatments the embryos had to go through. They had to basically freeze or burn, nearly to death, to make them stronger so they can split easier. Why do they use so many different treatments, is it to help prevent mental illnesses, chromosome loss, or other birth defects? The last thing I want to point out is the flowers and book. I understand that they were creating a hatred for a reason, but do you think there could have been another way to get the children to have a better work ethic? Do you think introducing the children to the flowers or books at a young age rather than letting them find and explore on their own, outside of work, would be better than scaring them with loud noises and electric shock?

To answer Anna on one of her questions, the reason they use the multiple methods of separation is to make clones that will be able to do basically the same task and also help create order, at least this is what I have been able to interpret. In response to the flowers and books question I do think there is another way to go about these deeds that doesn’t involve this odd “process”.  Questions that keep bugging me start with the director of the hatchery, what is going on with him? He gives me and my group a very creepy vibe. Does anyone else have any thoughts on him? One last note that I just thought of is what happens to the kid, clone, test tube babies (whatever you want to call them) that end up not being what they want. I may have read right over the info if given but it there has to be a few mishaps or mistakes with every other set of new test tube children that are I guess born, what are your thoughts?

    My group finds the book super confusing and boring. It took most of our discussion trying to figure out what was even going on. Three questions that I have after reading are: Given their ability to make a “perfect human”, why make people that are stupid? At one point do human rights and genuine happiness become more important than the economy? What would Soma be in our world today? I just started reading chapter six and I remembered a point I brought up in the last discussion my group had. I asked something along the lines of “I wonder what would happen if they decided to change or if a Alpha-Plus wanted to become a Beta or a Delta?” I got a few pages into chapter six and Bernard Marx started talking about being his own person, different from everybody else. My group has just finished reading chapter 6. I find the book a lot more interesting and readable now that a storyline has started to develop. We’re being introduced to the main characters of the book, and finally some idea on the plot of the book can be inferred. We start to see that more than one of the characters have personality traits other than they’re designed to have. The director shows a slight sign of irregularity then quickly catches himself. Do you think their will be a breakthrough in society where everyone reveals true individuality or only the few characters we’ve met? Are helicopters the normal transportation for them i.e. cars or only for the higher classes? Why is wrong to travel to certain destinations? We just finished chapter 12, though through Padlet I’m pretty sure I know what happens in the rest of the book. I’m at the part where Helmoltz gets caught writing poems and is getting in trouble. Who is the director now that Tokima resigned? How long has the New World’s society been producing children in factories if Tokima was able to have a child? Why did humans stop reproducing the traditional way?
Our group thought some possibilities might have been to prevent genetic disorders, attempt to control how smart or dumb they were, or to make the process faster and be able to choose genes.
What would it be like if the government decided to control how we reproduce and control how our children were raised?
Fear of not having a mothers attachment, only beneficial for life threatening diseases, and children raised like robots is a bad thing.
What is the purpose of the negative reinforcement and how does it affect the children?
The children are taught to hate and it can be compared to reverse socialization.
