South Highfields Neighbours is a local residents' group in Leicester. We have become concerned about the large number of Victorian terraced houses in our area which have been defaced with external insulation cladding. This is changing the built environment. It is affecting the health of the buildings and of the residents. Leicester is, together with Luton and Birmingham, one of the three local authorities in England worst affected by this problem. We are looking for academics and researchers in the fields of history (the Victorian built environment), climate change (energy conservation), public health (respiratory disease), and perhaps other fields we haven't thought of, who can work together and with us on community-based ways to tackle this problem. I’m a Lecturer in Psychology from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. My expertise covers mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative), and I’m particularly interested in understanding how sport-led, community-based interventions can promote the mental health of young people who face barriers accessing traditional support services.

I work with Leicester City in the Community (charitable arm of Leicester City FC) and have several project ideas that align with the 2026-27 Collaboratory priority area on issues affecting young men and boys.

I'm looking to develop a collaborative PhD proposal exploring how healthy soils, biodiversity and inclusive green spaces can support the wellbeing, belonging and participation of neurodiverse people while strengthening community resilience.

The idea is to investigate how community green spaces—including parks, allotments, community gardens, urban woodlands and nature reserves—can become places where people actively care for nature through activities such as soil stewardship, habitat restoration, composting, biodiversity monitoring and regenerative land management. Rather than viewing nature simply as a therapeutic setting, the project will explore how actively caring for living soils and ecosystems can benefit both environmental and human health.

The research will focus particularly on neurodiverse young people and adults who receive a neurodivergent diagnosis later in life, working with communities to co-design more inclusive green spaces and green social prescribing pathways.

The project will adopt a participatory, strengths-based approach, recognising neurodiverse people as active contributors to biodiversity, environmental stewardship and community wellbeing.

I'm particularly looking for collaborators with expertise or lived experience in:

Neurodiversity (especially neurodivergent-led organisations, advocates and researchers)
Green social prescribing and community health
Community-led green spaces (allotments, parks, community gardens, nature reserves, urban woodlands)
Soil health, biodiversity or regenerative land management
Participatory and co-produced research

I'm especially keen to identify community organisations (as well as academic colleagues) to shape the project from the outset.

My research interests centre on autistic women, hidden homelessness, gender-based violence and coercive control, with a particular focus on experiences that remain unseen or unrecognised by services.

My MA research explored autistic women’s experiences of hidden homelessness in the UK, drawing on critical realist and feminist perspectives alongside lived experience. From this work, I developed the concept of ‘Synergistic Hiddenness’ to describe how hidden homelessness, hidden or masked autism, and hidden abuse can intersect and reinforce one another.

I am particularly interested in developing this work through PhD research and interdisciplinary collaboration, including research examining why autistic women may not recognise coercive control or identify themselves as homeless, and how housing, homelessness, domestic abuse, health and social care services could work together more effectively.

I am keen to connect with researchers working across autism/neurodivergence, homelessness, gender-based violence, social policy, sociology, health and social care, and lived-experience research.
