Before the 1970’s, any and all technology was new and used extensively. In the mid-70’s new technology and devices were invented. People bought this new technology and stopped using the “old” technology. This era is generally referred to the “beginning of electronic waste”. In 1976 the R.C.R.A. had made the disposal of e-waste illegal, influencing every single developed or developing country to follow in their footsteps. Mobile phones started to become a popular household item in the early 1990’s. Motorola released the international 3200, the first digital mobile phone. In 2007 Apple released the first official iPhone, soon after in 2008 Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy, in October of that year Android released the HTC Dream.

People who are poor are positively impacted by e-waste. They go out into landfills and pick out working parts so that they can sell them and create income. The average pricing for e-waste based on gold amounts are...
- Older phones = 2$
- Desktop computers = 12$
- Laptop computers = 6$
Many of the factories that recycle the parts use machines, and not humans (mainly). This affects people's health because when they melt the tech for nonrenewable resources, they release fumes which contain lead. This can lead to lung and esophageal cancer.

It causes pollution by releasing harmful chemicals and much of these harmful chemicals contains lead, mercury and other dangerous substances. Did you know that in 2021, Apple produces 22.5 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide? These substances are released when the waste is melted down to recover gold, silver and copper. Much electronic waste contains valuable materials such as copper in wires and gold in other parts that make it attractive for recycling. It creates an excessive amount of waste, did you know that within five years, the annual figure may reach 65 million tons (worldwide)?
The majority of e-waste ends up in landfills and some of it rolls into the ocean.

The creation of laws that ensure proper e-waste disposal has created a whole new industry: e-waste recycling. The recycling of e-waste is also good for companies because they don't have to create more waste. They can also buy working-condition parts in bulk which is relatively cheap (compared to making new tech). The country with the most e-waste is China. I personally believe that this is because it is the most heavily populated country. The tech industry is worth $5,200,000,000,000~.
